On the plus side, there were at least 3 stupid fans in the comments that thought it was Jayden Daniels and not Sam
I just remember, after all the hype, watching the Tennessee State game and being totally underwhelmed by his arm strength. He just hangs the ball out there. He's a great guy but not going to be an NFL quarterback.

I remember people drooling, saying we were getting the ACC's all time passing leader. "His numbers are better than Trevor Lawrence's!" Yeah, because Sam played for 12 years, starting as a freshman. Not trying to knock Sam, just being realistic. I thought he was a decent QB who would have been more successful if a first time OC wasn't coaching him and his receivers had been healthy and more experienced. Bad situation to walk into.

It’s also tough to tell if his arm was hit as he was throwing. If it wasn't, it was a split second from it.

For sure, he was put in a bad situation after Rees left, and he handled it with class. And he was a pretty good QB for us. Just had a bit of a popgun arm on deeper throws - which was surprising at the time given the Wake Forest stats, and the Heisman hype - and it looks like he still does.

Supposedly there were a lot of drops by Washington receivers according to some that watched the game. Was it more than 2, @NumbersGuy0520 ?
Early on, he did have some drops over the middle. They were key plays that torpedoed the drive so he never got in a rhythm. That said, his interception was bad. CB just waiting to step in front of his pass. Think Ian Book coming in to relieve Winbush in the 2017 Miami game.

I can think of 2-3 that wiped out what would have been 20+ yard gains. One was wide open over the middle and was a pure drop. Another was actually a really nice over the shoulder ball down the sideline that the WR should’ve reeled in. I’m forgetting the third. I want to say a pass should have been caught in the endzone but got broken up.

The WR also 100% slipped on the interception (they showed this and commentated on it on replay). Still not a great throw, but probably just a PBU or maybe even a completion if he doesn’t.

Sam isn’t a starting NFL QB but his statline is pretty far off from the game he played.

I watched the first half of the game and Hartman had two absolute dimes for huge gains that hit WRs in the hands and got dropped. Washington was playing their scrubs and looked awful throughout. Hartman did not look good, but his WRs did him no favors.

I can't remember ND's QB room being as healthy as it's been since Hartman. Put Hartman in Leonard's situation, ND wins more games, and Hartman has better stats.

Every time I want to rag on Sam, I remember the situation he got dealt with Rees leaving, a huge down grade in receivers, and Porker getting the OC gig. What a mess.
Rees didn't do this program any favors, leaving uber late in the coaching carousel in freakin' February. Then we seemingly swung and missed on Ludwig for whatever reason, speculated $$, and MF was put in a pretty difficult position. He absolutely processed Porker after the '23 season lol

Hartman is Jayden's boy off the field. I would be surprised if he didn't get resigned to the practice squad to keep their prince happy.

How much will he make on the practice squad. He’s been on there before. Bumbling experience. Should be where Shaduer lands. Should have kept Huntley. Many ND players of the last dripping fast. St Brown, Troy Pride, Mustipher, Day, Boykin another WR of ours and Jaylon. Still a lot of domers still out there. Book on a squad still?

Honestly the fact that Sheldon Day, Troy Pride, ESB and Mustipher have lasted as long in the league as they have is fairly impressive.

League minimum is like $13k/ week which is well over $200K for the season. That's not chump change, plus he's done a nice job of marketing himself for endorsements.

One more time: Our guys just smarter better guys.

Kids! Come to Notre Dame!!!

((I remember several years ago a member of an NFL coaching staff remarking about a series of player-idiot behaviors some teams were having. He said about drafting an ND player: Well, we know we won't have any of that kind of problem in the press.))
