For not having experience playing under center, he sure looked comfortable.

Don't look now but if Hartman has a great season he's likely to finish career at #2 at the all-time passing touchdowns list in FBS history. That's kinda wild to think about lol six years of eligibility pays dividends.

And if I'm ND, I stat pad against Tennessee State because few things lift a program like a QB at the Heisman ceremony. Let this grown ass man throw 7 TDs against an FCS school.

What would it take to get Hartman at least as a finalist for the Heisman?
Stats alone aren’t likely to do it, in our offense. But good numbers plus going 11-1? Would 10-2 with a win over the current Heisman-holder do it?

He is everything we've been waiting for at QB1 for a very, very long time. Just about everything was sharp, crisp, had purpose. He throws the ball and it doesn't even look like any part of his right arm moves. I wish he was 20 years of age and not 24.

The line and attack are there to keep him upright, and I believe he has the skill people around him that will make a difference, but I also think he's going to make a lot of people around him better if you know what I mean.

Efficiency will be key. If he could toss 38 TDs with <5 INTs and 3500+ yards, he would be in the conversation if ND is 11-1.

12-0 with wins over Ohio State, Southern California, and Clemson and he could be the favorite. Having a baller QB is nice.

I know it's an NCAA 14 mindset to stat pad, but I'm just saying that playing in week zero gives the Hartman narrative an extra week to put stats on and until the BYE weeks catch up he could be among the national leaders in stats, thus putting him in the conversation. Winning against the big foes would keep him there.

It’s way too early, but I really don’t think we lose any we should win with SH and I say bec. kind of early in the season and at home, and off QB year for them, we beat OSU; bec. It’s later in the season and away, we win a close one with Clemson (alternatively, this could be our one loss); and play a close one with USC at home because this will be the biggest game of the year IMO and one we can’t afford to lose for so many reasons. But Riley (and Kingsbury) and Heisman winner coming to town will make this game a 5-Old Fashion kind of game! I hope the green jerseys come on after pre-game warmup!

I like that ND saves the green jerseys for special games which over the last 15 years seem to mainly be for the Shamrock Series games, BUT I believe this year’s USC/ND game is gonna be one for the ages and very worthy of donning the kelly green jerseys a la 1977 and 2005!!

Did he? I thought we just had a chance?
He wanted to commit but McCullough had Gi'Bran Payne follow him after decommitting from IU. Payne was a huge prospect as a Soph but regressed due to constant injuries (missed 3 games as a Soph, ALL Jr year) and as a Sr only had 66att for 274yds in a few games. Judkins ran for 5k in 3 seasons as a Prep.

10-2 with about 4k and 35-7 ratio and a victory over CW...Problem is we won't nor will we need to throw it enough. CW had 500 attempts last year and will likely be in the high 400s this year while Hartman will throw it somewhere in the 300s.

The college powers that be should favour players that play college longer like Hartman.

I think I touched on it in the Post Game thread, but comparable stats aside it was definitely two very different Navy performances between Hartman and Pyne. On paper they look very similar, but Sam just made everything look effortless yesterday. He was spreading the ball around, he didn't have to force it to Mayer almost every play, and he looked calm like Joe Cool instead of a deer in headlights. He delivered perfect passes, the only incompletions were one to kill the clock and two drops. I get it was a Navy defense and he'll be facing better competition at the end of September, but he's got so much poise and efficiency he made it look easy. It probably helped he had a few new weapons at WR and RB like Greathouse, Payne, and Price along with better protection than last year.

Agree. He’s clearly better than Pyne, regardless of statistics.

I like this team a lot. Very good overall team. The one bummer imo is we seem to lack elite, first round (Greathouse is certainly very very good snd might be him) skill players like Ohio State, USC, and others have. That Golden Tate like guy with elite speed and elusiveness that takes over games. The same is true for the defense. Those first round talent linebackers like Jaylon Smith or DE like Tuitt really come through in big games. It would be nice to have one or two of those rare talents on this team. Give me any one of Mayer, Hamilton, Fuller, Floyd, Tate, Tuitt, Te’o, Smith and we have just that little extra vs Ohio State and USC. Maybe we won’t need it since we are just all around good. I hope I’m wrong but I could easily see this being a competitive team that keeps a playoff game close but just doesn’t have the horses to win it all. Then again, maybe we are better for it and play better as a unit. Time will tell.

How about Hartman saying the “king of Dublin” gave him that shillelagh post-game?
Dublin is a major Columbus suburb (pretty sure that's where Quinn was from?). ND needs to ramp up the Heisman talk 100x over and the graphic arts department needs to have the King of Dublin artwork ready to roll if they win against OSU.
