Has there been one QB under Kelly that completed his eligibility at ND that went on to even modest success as a starter in the NFL?

Kizer started one year at Cleveland where he was pretty much a flop. Did any of Kelly's other QBs go on to the NFL with any success?

The pattern of non-productive QB development seems to apply whether or not the QB stayed or transferred. Nearly all the Kelly-era QBs regressed in successive years.
Seeing as ND is a college team we don't need them to be productive in the NFL.

Update on PJ from Rotoworld this morning:

Phil Jurkovec QB, Boston College Eagles
Boston College redshirt sophomore Phil Jurkovec and redshirt junior Dennis Grosel are listed as co-starters at quarterback for Saturday's game vs. Duke.

Jurkovec transferred to Boston College from Notre Dame in January, but the NCAA did not make a decision regarding his request for an immediate eligibility waiver until early August. He's been cleared to play, but there hasn't been much in the way of separation between the redshirt sophomore and holdover Dennis Grosel. At this rate it's likely that both will see action at Duke in what is Boston College's first game of the season.

Im expecting half of this board to implode if he has a great game.

I bet he's not great. One thing about Kelly, he recruits mediocre quarterbacks but gets the most out of them. They never leave and have more success.

I was expecting him to have a great year. In limited action, he went 12/16 last year for 2 TDS. However, if he can’t beat out Dennis Grossel, who completes 48% of his passes last year, that’s a concern.

Time will tell obviously, but I think it's more likely that PJ is a washout at BC than a star.

Grossel is the guy who started against us last year and his numbers in 2019 were....gross.

If he can't separate himself from that guy, I think this is no big loss. Only time will tell.

Like they say, when you have two quarterbacks you have no quarterback. Duke should roll.

Keep in mind it’s a guy who’s had like 12 practices vs the guy who’s started the second half the season last year.

I personally think he’ll shine at BC. No facts just feel. In the few appearances at ND where he was actually allowed to do something besides hand off, I felt he showed poise and composure. Just my opinion.

True, but it was in mop up time, so it's against 2nd & 3rd stringers and there's no pressure.

I'm sure he has November 14 circled on his calendar. Luckily, I'm sure our D-Line does too...

Well, if youd listen to some on this board, you would know that practice doesnt matter when it comes to Phil. You just gotta put him in the game!!

I expected him to overtake Book. He never did. Seeing what we've seen from Book, particularly in the big games, it's really disappointing that for all of the touted potential PJ had coming out of high school the most we got were some tickle reps and an eventual transfer to Boston College of all places.

This one was probably the most disappointing QB under Kelly to fizzle out, mostly because I had zero hype about Gunner Kiel at the time. I was hyped about Jurkovec. Disappointing, but the show goes on.

Pretty sure you're all alone with this take...that's was a huge get at the midnight hour.

Pretty sure I am, which is absolutely fine. And it went about as I expected it would. I was a far bigger fan of Everett Golson as a recruit and I was of the opinion at the time that as long as Golson was around Kiel wasn't going to get on the field. For the time they were there together, that would up being the case. Had he stuck around maybe things would have been different.

I don't know if I necessarily share Les Miles' opinion of Kiel, but to go from IU verbal to LSU verbal to last minute ND signee....you didn't need a crystal ball to see a transer was a strong possibility.

Had a couple of good years at UC but the injuries really derailed him. Ultimately a shame.

Commonly known around Columbus, IN that Gunner was a big fan of prescription pills. Not saying it had anything to do with his decision/though process or play on the field, but couldn't have helped...

Definitely *allegedly* affected his attempted comeback at UC after the great 1.5 years he had prior to getting hurt.

Nobody says that

"If you have two, you have none."

You've never heard this phrase before? LOL. Try coaching and you'll hear it every August like clockwork when you're trying to figure out what the hell you have before your first game.

Unless you're IMG Academy or something.

That first year was a statistical riot. He put up the numbers everyone thought he would.

Don't want to hijack the thread, but ultimately disappointed Jurkovec didn't work out. I had high hopes.

Not a flattering picture of ND football in the pamost gazette. Phil basically sums up what he experienced, which aligns to how some suspected. Basically a giant billboard for QBs to not go to ND.

Going to spill over to tight ends too when people realize Kelly continues to start back up quarterbacks that can see the middle of the field.

Rooting for ya PJ!!!

I was and still am a Phil fan and hope he does well. But I do not care what gets reported, if he was good enough to beat out Book in practice he would have played.
