a Shotput throw is going to move in the air though (as BGI point out, good for pitchers/bad for QB's). IMO i would expect his accuracy to drop in windy/wet conditions

Okay, we just play the backup anytime there's a game in the Carolinas.

If anything I'm more worried that our coaches will try too hard to "fix it". A good throwing motion is important in the NFL, where nearly everything has to be mechanically perfect because everyone is a top .01% athlete. In college football? If it works, ball out.

It won't be our coaches, it'll be an offseason QB "guru".

I'll chime in my two cents for the umpteenth time. I learned from George Curry and Ron Powlus Sr. Went to every QB camp they had from 2nd grade to 11th grade. I attended ND football camp senior year working with Ron Powlus Jr.

All my QB coaches and OCs growing up told us all the same stuff as well. Ball high to the ear, and quick release without a windup. We DON'T want to look like a baseball player bringing the ball from under the armpit. From the chin to the ear is all the motion you want when getting the ball high to the throwing position.

Phil has a 3/4s (really higher than that) motion. What he does though is, he doesn't waste any motion, and he shot puts it. I will always take a guy with that motion than the Tebow or Leftwich motion. They'll tweak a few things, try to sure up mechanics, but he doesn't need an overall. Ball is released quick, high enough, and with a lot of zip. As long as his decision making is sound, you'll think nothing of it in a game. It looks weird because many big time QBs these days don't throw this way.

In the last II podcast, Tim Prister wasn't very impressed with his mechanics .
Mike Frank on ISD also.
Not sure about Prister, but all Mike Frank was saying was that it was noticeable and that if they cleaned it up he could improve his velocity. MF didn't seem too worried, which is saying something for a classic pessimist...

BW is on the front page of ESPN.com right now.... but talks about PJ taking ND to a higher level.

Most important fall camp storyline for each Top 25 team

Which quarterback gives the Irish their best chance to challenge for the College Football Playoff? Brandon Wimbush figures to start the opener against Michigan, with Ian Book ready as a backup. But freshman Phil Jurkovec is going to play, too. And if the guys ahead of him slip, the freshman might just help take Notre Dame to a higher level offensively. -- Sherman

Any updates/input?

I love PJ as a competitor and an athlete. No inside info at all, but I cannot believe he will not be a tremendous asset to The Irish.

All thoughts and/or comments are welcome. Please be kind!

Cheers and Go Irish!!

I got nothing but will certainly be something to follow during Fall Camp. Sounds like they don't expect Book to be around for the 20' season so we need Phil to starting looking the part.

I was a little harsh on him after the reports that came out during spring ball. I needed to remember that it was his first spring on campus. This will be a big season for him as it should set him up for 2020. Hopefully he gets some time this season.

But, until 2020, I'm going to enjoy watching Book because I think he could rival Kizer for the best Irish QB since Clausen.

My biggest hope is that our offense is good enough to put some opponents away early. And I'd love to see PJurk get some serious minutes in games that aren't in jeopardy.

Just to begin the seasoning process.

Sampson in his article in the Athletic recently said that if he could make an all-Brian Kelley team with the position groups (ie: 2015 Offensive line, 2012 LBs), that he would have this version of Ian Book. He's pretty confident that Book is going to light it up.

I'm still being patient with PJ. He's so young and has 4 years of eligibility remaining. And the staff was messing with his mechanics when he arrived. Hopefully that is the right move long term, we will see, but that can be tough for a QB to work through initially.

this worries me alot as PJ's family/HS coaches said Phil was at his best "when Phil was allowed to be Phil" which basically means nobody tried to correct his mechanics or coach him to stay in the pocket. He was at his best when allowed to be an athlete playing QB. Not sure this is going to work the same for him in college football. If Brendon Clark comes in and is accurate i think he'll pass PJ on depth chart down the road.

This is a bold take my friend. You're certainly entitled to that opinion, but I think PJ will work it out. I fully expect there to be an "open" competition next spring (assuming Book is gone), but my guess is Phil's intangibles (arm strength and athletic ability) will give him the nod, possibly with a short leash similar to what BW had last year before Book took over.

This is probably more about Book getting out early this weekend but I’d be interested to hear how he did with the reps.

Doesn't matter Lucky. I just read over in the Book thread that Phil's overrated, not tht talented and most likely to transfer. I'd concentrate on Brendan Clark.

Not sure why I used italics...

I'm glad to know they're doing this. Regardless of any other discussion the chances that Book plays every meaningful snap are low if history is any indication. Hopefully we see a lot of him on Saturday.

Can't wait for him to transfer to Pitt, get immediate eligibility and beat us next year.

So now we can assume that Book is going to get hurt next year and we ride the Clark wave.
