Idk how much of the blame for BWs struggles we can pin on Rees, but is anyone else concerned that Tommy will struggle to develop Phil, given the chance?

I honestly don't know why Tommy is the QB coach. Because he was available?

Even though he has a short resume, coaches and players he has worked with have raved about him and how good he is. Even when he was playing, a lot of people at ND believed he would be a great coach after graduation.

At least some of it.

Sentimental coach is sentimental.

Yeah, but since when did ND become an on-the-job training facility? Isn't that what GAs are for?

I love Tommy but thought it was too soon for him to step in as QB coach at ND. Coaching a first year starting DT QB is a big job. Especially one who needs so much help in the passing game. IMO tommy should have spent a few years in the MAC or a place with less spotlight.

What do you consider on the job training? Does someone need 3 years, 5 years, 10 years before the training is done? He has worked with players in both the college and pro level. Spent one of those years with San Diego as an offensive assistant. Here is a quick snippet of what was said about him:

Experience, believe it or not, is not a critical trait in a successful football coach. Do you know the game, and can you teach it?

Rees checked both boxes in permanent ink.

“When he came in, the players respected him, because he knew what he was talking about,” Steichen says. “As soon as you know what you’re talking about at any level — it doesn’t matter what level it is — as soon as you can help these guys, they’re going to respect you no matter what your age is.”

The bolded part, for me, is important since these are older, professional athletes believing he can coach. With him living the experience of a student-athlete at ND and being the starting QB for multiple years, I think he would be a great contributor to help not only teach mechanics but handle the stress of studies, practice, etc as an ND QB.

I really don't think this has anything to do with Rees. Wimbush is all over the place. He's sloppy with his delivery and I'm not sure how you coach this garbage. He's literally stepping out of passes. He just can't deliver easy balls

This. Wimbush should move to slot next year. Everyone wants true freshman Phill to start. But I would rather see an experienced smart QB in Book with first great reps from spring throughout the season.

Soooo... Phil played a quarterfinal playoff game over the weekend against the boys from State College HS.

Game was tied 14-14 at half. Reports were P-R played as poorly as they could have. Phil took over the locker room at half and P-R came out and dropped 28 on them in the 3rd. Phil accounted for all of them, 3 through the air and 1 on the ground. Won the game 49-21.

Phil went 20-25 ... 252 yds ... 3 TD ... 14 car ... 120 yds ...2 TD.

Updated season totals:

14 G ... 211-278 ... 75.9% ... 3531 yds ... 36 TD ... 4 Int ... 104 car ... 1028 yds ... 19 TD

They play 12-1 Manheim Twp next Saturday in the semis. Game is in Altoona for anyone is interested.

Would have been a lot more but he missed the second half of the season last year + playoffs and may have started as a freshman but Pitt's current QB, Patt Dinucci was an All-State senior.

100% here. Turnover Tommy cant make the guy hit wide flippin open receivers nor can he make him not throw straight to the incoming LBer.

Face it, BW is a runner with the occasional throw. Sadly, he just has a large possibility of not connecting on the throws he does make and is not a legit 3rd down producer. You can be successful with a running QB but you have to be able to make the throws when it is 1v1 or wide open receivers because there is a safety spying you every play.

Thanks for the stats Crusader. Didn’t he also sit out the 3rd and 4th quarters of several games this year due to their blowout wins?

If I had to guess, I'd say he has sat out 9-10 of the 14 4th Q's this year and 7-8 3rd Q's.

Phil has been named one of 6 finalists for the US Army Bowl Player of the Year.

The others are:

WR - Amon-Ra St. Brown
LB - Dax Hollifield
DE - Micah Parsons
QB - Trevor Lawrence - Clemson Commit
ATH - Derion Kendrick - Clemson Commit

Phil should win this going away and be given his 5th star back.

ASB has 1000+ yds receiving and 18 TD's. Obvioulsy good but POTY good? He's the other offensive guy to JT Daniels on the best manufactured team in the country. His numbers are down from last year. Statistically... not even the best WR in his own conference. If he had Javon McKinley HS #'s, then it'd be much closer but JT Daniels is the real Player of the Year on this team... and Phil has better #'s than him too. Advantage Phil

Dax Holifield's numbers are still eye popping but way down from his all-time Nintendo season last year. He also plays in 2A which is the 3rd highest of 8 classes in NC. Love the dude but that's cheating. Advantage Phil

Derion Kendrick will be a WR at Clemson but plays QB in HS. He plays for the top school in SC just like Phil does in PA. They are both favored to win the state title. They both rushed for 1000 yds / 10 ypc / 19 TD's. But Phil threw for 1000 more yards and 10 more TD's w/ less Int's. Advantage Phil.

Trevor Lawrence. They are dying to give this award to Lawrence. He is the state of Georgia's all time leading passer with 13,000+ yds. But this isn't the Player of the Career, it's Player of the Year. On an 11-1 team but out of the playoffs. Did have a 40:1 TD to Int ratio but passed for less yards... 3100 yds and rushed for a measly 200 yds playing against a BAD 4A (out of 7A) schedule. Got bounced from the playoffs by the first Catholic school they faced. Once again, this is Player of the Year not Career. Advantage Phil.

Micah Parsons to me is the only competition. His defensive #'s are down from the last two seasons. 11 G ... 55 Tkl ... 17.5 TFL ... 9.5 Sks but he was asked to be the main ball carrier this year and he posted an impressive ... 98 car ... 1161 yds ... 11.8 ypc ... 27 TD going two ways. But he ran for just 43 yds in a season ending loss in the 5A playoffs. I'll still take Tim Tebow w/ a 76% completion rate. Advantage Phil.

Now give him his 5th Star back Mr. Wiltfong!

would rather the hype be low on Phil.

underpromise and overdeliver!

Oh no... another anti-hypester.

No. You walk into the locker room like Bird and ask, Which one of you girls is getting 2nd?

Phil ain't no punk, he'll plant a foot in their azz and a flag on their 50.

All hail Phillip I, King of Michiana. Long live the King!

Not really one to compare but Phil reminds me so much of Jarrett Stidham and I hope he is just as good if not better

Hope he's more Stidham than Blake Barnett who was the other guy I thought of when watching his highlights.

Luckylucci, I wonder what Brandon has been doing for three years??? Mechanics suck, and just an overall bad thrower. 49 percent as a junior just isn’t good at all.

Right now watching the train wreck throwing of Brandon, I can live with a freshman next year. What is he going to do throw 45 percent??

Once again. Extend PWO offers for Phil's WR/DB's Ray Falcone AND Jason Defrancisis plus RB/slot Brandon Crawford.
