What was Pine-Richland ranked nationally before the game?

They just handled the country’s #8 squad in a 6A state championship game. That’s impressive.

Even more impressive is following the narrative... Phil has basically been willing his team to success against good teams. ND might finally be getting a guy with all the physical tools AND the mental game on lock AND the testicular fortitude to tie it all up without getting shook.

Pine-Richland caps historic season with PIAA championship win against St. Joseph's Prep | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

“I think this has to one of the best teams, if not the best, ever from the WPIAL,” said Pine-Richland coach Eric Kasperowicz. “What these kids did on offense and then throw in the defense … But that’s for you [media] guys to decide. I know we have the best quarterback in the country, hands down.”

“We didn’t change anything in the second half. They got tired and we didn’t,” said Andrew Kristofic, a two-way lineman for Pine-Richland. “But that’s how we play. We wear teams down. We were tougher than them.”

Where this team belongs among the best in WPIAL history certainly is a matter of debate. But it shouldn’t be forgotten any time soon.

“I can’t really compare us to those great teams because I didn’t see them,” said Jurkovec. “I know others had great players. I just hope we’re remembered for years because of what we did this year.”

And how would Jurkovec like to be remembered?
