Umm

Prister just casually dropped on the 247 boards that Lenzy was not asked to return...
Damn. I like that MF has the stones to make a call like that if so, but also pretty surprised they'd feel he couldn't help the team next year.

Last time I checked, ND needed live bodies at WR.

Cant see them turning away a backup, let alone a starter unless it was clear that there was no interest in returning.

Think we’re probably lacking context and Prister is being weird with his wording.

Did he want to return and they said no is the implication, but not sure I am just assuming that.

My guess is they feel good about their chances of getting a grad transfer WR that has announced (or will announce) that they'll be in the portal.

I would have liked to see Lenzy next year with a quarterback that can actually hit him on a deep ball. I felt like he was actually open a lot this year.

If this isn't some misunderstanding then it has to mean they have one or more WR transfers already lined up.

Lenzy was a true team player this year so it would be unfortuante if he was pushed out but I am not opposed to roster turnover if it means ND is playing ball in the portal and were committing to championship level players at positions of greater need.

As much as I like Lenzy the teammate and think he does offer some things to the offense, he hasnt shown anything spectacular that we cant replace with current roster and/or transfer.

Could Lenzy have hinted that he wants to grad transfer somewhere prior to this? I have no inside info, just a thought.

O'Malley saying Salerno was asked back but not Lenzy. If this is true I have serious reservations about Freeman moving forward.
Let's pump the breaks, man. We don't have all of the info. Rumor has it Lenzy may have wanted to move on anyways...May have been a Rees decision anyways? At the very least he would be providing plenty of input, it's his offense.

Good Lord. You have absolutely no idea what's going on behind the scenes. Obviously there is something going on besides play on the field. Nobody in their right mind (including Freeman and TR) would say Solerno is a better receiver than Lenzy. Maybe Lenzy has made it clear he doesn't want to come back. Maybe Lenzy is starting to complain a lot about how he is always open and the quarterback can't get him the ball. Maybe it's a team chemistry thing. Don't know what the real answer is, but I'm certain their is a backstory that explains all of this.

Not to defend what appears to be a weird decision, but playing devil's advocate:

Stuckey likes a diverse range of skill sets in his room. Salerno is the only *true* slot-style receiver with experience. Styles and Thomas both play inside, but their skill sets are different.

Lenzy is a burner, but his skill set is not unique, particularly when you consider that his speed isn't as elite as we might have hoped back when he was burning USC's asses in 2019. He's a deep threat, which we've got two or three others that are proven in that regard, between Styles, Thomas and Merriweather (and maybe even Colzie, though idk if he was ever targeted on a true 'go' route).

When you figure they're also bringing in Flores, who might be a more-beefy version of Lenzy... it's not necessarily a necessity to keep him, whereas Salerno can bridge the gap to whenever Love/Edwards are more seasoned as slot receivers.

If true, it might be as simple as Salerno is willing to stay, be a backup, and provide some veteran leadership to what will be a VERY young group. Perhaps Lenzy isn't interested in continuing his football career if ND is going to cut his playing time.

“I never followed up with Tom on it being a Lenzy decision or both. Easily could've been partly his decision.”

Everyone’s getting worked up over Prister liking to be intentionally vague and short. O Malley then says he doesn’t know the full story as posted above.

Salerno has established himself as a superb blocker as an in line guy He'd be back for that role, not to take reps from the wide outs who go downfield to catch passes. He'd be used exclusively, I presume, in that role if he's coming back. A WR who blocks a DB in space.
He got 2 snaps vs USC and I still saw people in here raging about him taking reps away from better players. Its just situational usage like using Davis Sherwood as a third TE.

Nothing against Salerno, I’m sure he’s a hard worker and great teammate, but I hope that ND will soon be in a spot where a guy of his talent level never sees the field except for a honorary snap on senior day.

Salerno was on the field for only 43 pass plays all year, 1, 1, 4 (BC) and 0 the last 4 games.

I know everyone liked to lose their minds whenever he was on there but he really wasn’t used that often.

Salerno accepted an invitation to a college all-star game, the Military sponsored one to be exact. He's not coming back.

As someone who thought it was time to move on from Lenzy last year, I'm a bit surprised if he wasn't asked back. I think he made some real improvements under Stuckey this year, I think he actually could have had a decent breakout year if someone else was under center. We do have a lot of good WR talent coming in though.
