I don't know if there was any behind the paywall action today but Illini/247's Gus Ramos just added a CB for ND today.

Kinda surprising.

So do we actually know of any reason we should believe he’s cooled on ND?... I know that leading up to ESD he was thought to be an ND lean, then he had the family issue so didn’t want to announce .

I know that there’s a chance his family issue was part him changing his mind, but couldn’t it just be that the family issue was serious and caused him not to want to focus on his commitment at that time?

this seems pretty likely to me.

From what I’ve seen on 247 boards apparently in light of the family matters that have came up he was ready to sign with USC in the early signing period but ND convinced him to hold off. Loy still thinks we land him but it’s going to be tough.

I don't really believe that for a second.

Truth is before ESP he had told ND he was signing here and had told some other schools he was signing with ND. Obviously, that whole situation has changed but I find it really hard to believe he went from that to "ready to sign with USC" in a matter of hours.

With that being said, I would personally bet against him signing here at this point.

Emergency aside, sounds like he would have probably chosen ND because he didn't like being slow-played by USC. So the delay helps USC big time, since now they can shift back to their traditional sales tactics. It's hard not to believe a sales pitch when you really want to deep down.

Not sure about now, but it seemed at the time of his delayed announcement, USC was pretty convinced it benefited them. And might have been a result of them “turning up the heat”.

That's exactly the case. The delay was not a positive for ND at all.

As long as they land one of him or Boykin as expected, then we're all wavy-gravy.

meh. hope we land him, but won't be the end of the world if we don't.

can't remember, with the other Ss on board, where was Irvin projected in the larger picture with Allen and Griffith? I'd assume Griffith is going to get a shot at staying at CB first, especially if we get Boykin. How does Lenzy and Bracy fit in too?

Projected at CB. That's his camp's demand.

Griffith will be at FS in no time after any CB experimentation concludes.

Lenzy will be at WR. Bracy will battle out with the other CB's but wouldn't surprise me if he gets a shot at both sides of the ball plus the return game (Lenzy's a return candidate too)

Thanks Crusader.
Thought I saw somewhere Lenzy was recruited a couple places at CB? is WR firm?

What do you think about him being the slot cover???? I think he's athletic enough to handle it......while I agree about him being a FS long term, he could also slide over and cover the slot.

I haven't seen anything official saying he'd only be a WR or that he would definitely get a look at CB, just talk of WR and return game. Speculation on the other hand is everywhere and for good reason. Would I give him a look at DB? Yep. The play referenced in his thread at the 1:50 mark of his Sr. film is the best trait marker I saw in any DB film in 2018.

Basically, I'd run any WR 6-2 and under through DB workouts in camp and every DB would get a look at look at WR/Slot/APB. 90% of them went both ways at some point in HS. You never know when the next Russel or Prosise is gonna walk on campus. Work em out and let the professionals decide.

What do you think about him being the slot cover???? I think he's athletic enough to handle it......while I agree about him being a FS long term, he could also slide over and cover the slot.

That's a given. The majority of his HS film is him lined up over the slot because he had two future P5 JR. CB's and most teams they faced ran a spread (because everyone in their conference... and schedule it seems, had a P5 QB.) Per his tape he plays the position really well. Covers great, flips hips, plays the ball in the air well... actually turns head and finds ball while in the air. They'll break him of that if he comes... I keed I keed. It would be nice to have a nickel who is 6-2. A lot of teams will place a big WR / athletic TE there and when your package has a 5-9 guy lined up over, it presents a challenge.

IF there's a problem, it's does he want to be the next Julian Love or will he accept being the next Shaun Crawford or Nick Coleman if he's not a #1 CB? He has an All-Pro CB for a Dad. Dad's pushing for CB. Is Dad pushing for CB first but ok with nickel or FS if that's how it works out or is it CB or bust? There's talk around the net that it's the second to get him in your class. If I was Irvin Sr. I'd be pushing for the same thing but ok with starting FS or a Honeybadger role if he's as good as they think..

Would really be interesting to know exactly the Irvins' expectations/demands and the offers ND & SC came up with and how much if any advantage Lyght had/was given because of his relationship with Irivin Sr.

There has been a big push on the CB for Talanoa Hufanga to USC. I wonder if that will impact Irvin.

Maybe there's a push because USC doesn't like where they currently stand with Irvin?

No Hufanga is who SC has always wanted. It was him and Woodbey they were trying to talk into coming together. He seemed to be leaning more towards staying home and playing at Oregon but they lost Taggart and Woodbey went to FSU so SC put the full court press on Hufanga and he’s pretty much signed with SC just waiting to announce with a video today. SC has been hard after him but with Woodbey going to SC that really really opened they door for him. His recruitment has nothing to do with Irvin. Not sure how hard SC is after Irvin I keep hearing mixed reviews on that. I think they want him but his family really didn’t like being slow played. So idk what’s going on with that.

... or he might go 4-0 against the Trojans like Steve Beuerlein did.

... but if recent events are any indication of future performance, he's more likely to go down US 31 and get busted for trafficing a grip of weed like Kurt Vollers.

Sounds like dad wants ND and mom wants him to stay closer to home at USC or Washington

Some writers on that network crack me up sometimes. In what universe is Washington "close" to home... it's a 15+ hour drive, 2+ hour flight. There is no difference in terms of travel between ND and Washington except that you save an hour or so on your flight... you're not driving either one.

If he commits to Washington, it'll have nothing to do with "distance." It'll have to do with ND losing Elko and maybe USC running out of room.

Regardless, let's say he truly doesn't want to go away from home for legitimate reasons. Well if that's the case then give me the mid-Atlantic kid (Boykin) every time over the California skill position player for exactly this kind of reasoning. If you have serious reservations about leaving the left coast it's probably not going to work out out here.

At this point, I'd be really turning up the heat on him. Apparently he looked really good at the O-D game. And, like you, I'm starting to have my reservations about late cycle recruiting on the West Coast.

Takes me 20+ hours to drive from northern L.A. County to just south of Seattle. To go from where he is at to Seattle is probably like a 22hr drive. Its over 1000 miles away. Not close.

How long does it take YOU to drive 100 miles?
