Our TEs were not getting separation last year. It's hard to say how many times they could have been targeted last year (or were the primary receiver). AJ could create separation. Hope he hit the books and Brock gets some snaps.

And there were plenty of times they were wide open, and Kizer just missed them.

True. For whatever reason Kizer threw really poor balls at Smythe and Weishar many times. I dkbt know what happened to DK this year but it was very disappointing.

We're not expecting any new commitments at this game, are we?

The articles about Brock lately have been very positive. Good kid who committed to ND, not to any specific coach.

Can't wait to see him in an ND uniform, I can see him pushing Jones for some PT, and with the addition of Chip Long to the coaching staff with his work with tight ends will only help Brock and our other TE.

He'd push Smythe/Luatua, not Jones.

Had 2 catches for a game-high 45 yeards at the UA AA game today. Everyone is raving about him. Maybe we will be seeing him play this year. We don't have that TE with the combination of great blocking AND receiving threat now. He certainly is that.

He looked HUGE out there and seemed to run well and catch the ball smoothly. Caught two passes and a 2 pt conversion. Didn't notice his blocking much, but from what I've seen and read, this is a strength. I'd love to see him pass Smythe and Luatua and make a serious contribution next year!

Love the things I'm seeing/reading on this kid. The depth at TE for 2017 looks promising. #TEU

He might not move up in the rankings much with Rivals and ESPN (didn't check Scout), as he all ready carries a fairly lofty ranking. However, I'd be very surprised if he doesn't get a fairly signfcsnt bump from 247. They have him at 195th currently.

Also, he swapped jerseys with Robert Beal last week for the media lunch.

Tyler James had a tweet about it but on phone, can't embed

I can see him being a Jason Witten type TE. Not saying he will have the career Witten has had. But I see him as a good short to intermediate pass catcher, good redzone target and a I think he will be a better blocker.

Absolutely. I completely agree. Coming out of high school, I think he's about as a 'sure thing' as you'll find. Love that he's an early enrollee as well. Unfortunately I think he might not play this year because of Smythe and I think Kelly has a big love for Smythe. Durham has had injury issues though so Brock could end up seeing the field that way but there's also Weishar. Regardless, Wright is clearly a dynamite TE and will be great at ND and likely as a pro.

Crazy thing is, I don't think Kmet is far behind. I think Kmet is a slight step behind in blocking but looks like a bit more of a fluid runner and receiver.

On the day Notre Dame made the hire of offensive coordinator Chip Long official, the newest Irish assistant reached out to both halves of the nation’s top tight end haul.

Brock Wright Brock Wright was going to get an introduction to Chip Long soon enough.
The four-star tight end from Cypress, Texas, will enroll at Notre Dame next week for winter workouts, likely with the program’s new offensive coordinator leading his position. So while Wright didn’t need a re-recruitment after his position coach was fired and his main recruiter left, the Under Armour All-American hadn’t heard much from the Irish in the past month either.
That changed Monday thanks to Long, who was formally introduced by Notre Dame nearly two weeks after accepting the position to lead Brian Kelly’s offense.
“There wasn’t a lot of contact but a few coaches reached out,” said the 6-foot-5, 250-pound Wright. “With coach Booker leaving, that was the guy I normally went to for everything. It’s going to be different having him gone. But with me going up there so soon, I haven’t worried about it.”
Long reached out to Wright and Cole Kmet, the nation’s No. 3 and No. 4 tight ends on Scout.com, respectively.
“He told me and Cole the same thing, that it’s gonna be tight end heaven up there and of course that’s music to our ears,” Wright said. “The message was to get excited to get up there and work hard. He seems really excited and seems like a really cool guy.”
“I’m looking forward to meeting him.”

Notre Dame didn’t announce Long as tight ends coach, but it’s the position he worked at Illinois, Arizona State and Memphis. It’s assumed that’s where he’ll spend his time in South Bend, although the Irish also have an opening at receivers coach following Mike Denbrock’s departure for Cincinnati.
With all that turnover, Wright understood it might take a minute before the newly configured staff – one that is still not officially complete – would reach out. The Irish should have new faces at quarterback, tight end, receiver, special teams, defensive coordinator, defensive line, linebacker and strength coach.
“It’s all extremely new for them, just like it’s going to be new for me,” Wright said. “I think those relationships will come easily when I get up there, get acclimated with all the players. And it’s going to be new relationships for those current players as well.”
Wright will arrive in South Bend this weekend, with the spring semester starting one week from today. He’ll room with four-star offensive lineman Robert Hainsey, another Under Armour All-American, in a five-man early enrollee class that also includes athlete C.J. Holmes, safety Isaiah Robertson and offensive lineman Aaron Banks.

2. FIVE PROSPECTS THAT COULD OUTPERFORM THEIR RANKING

In the 2017 class, there are a few prospects that could end up being superstars but, for one reason or another, didn’t get that fifth star. Here are my top five:
1. QB Tate Martell
2. RB D’Andre Swift

3. TE Brock Wright – I’m a big fan of Wright and his game is very much like Jason Witten when it comes to inline blocking and finding the open spot in the intermediate passing game. But what if he adds a half-step of quickness and becomes more of a downfield threat? Watch out.

Between Wright, Kmet, and Alize, Kelly really needs to put up big numbers in order to keep getting these kids. It's been too long since we've looked like TE U.

Reminds me so much of Dalton Schultz. He's not quite as big as Jason Witten in GB's opinion

College football recruiting: Early enrollees who could make instant impact | SI.com
Potentially the next great Fighting Irish tight end, Wright should see the field this fall even with the talent Notre Dame returns at his position. The four-star recruit is a capable pass catcher, but what sets him apart are his blocking skills. Ranked No. 3 among tight ends in the class of 2017, Wright will have to battle with Alize Jones, who missed the 2016 season due to academic issues, and Durham Smythe, who caught nine passes for 112 yards. With the Irish’s QB situation in flux with DeShone Kizer heading to the NFL and Malik Zaire set to transfer, new offensive coordinator Chip Long will likely look to his running game, led by Josh Adams (933 yards on 5.9 yards per carry in 2016), to guide the attack. That could make Wright’s blocking skills especially valuable. All five of Notre Dame’s early enrollees last year saw action as true freshmen, so expect Wright to work his way into the offense.

Moved UP to #189 OA (92) and #6 TE in 247's final ranking.

Some analysts think that Kmet is actually better than Wright. Earlier on, Some said Kmet was the better receiver for sure but weren't as high on his blocking ability. Apparently at Army AA, he showed really solid blocking ability and a knack for getting after linebackers/second level. This kid could end up being the better of the two.

Kmet and Wright are going to be huge difference-makers at ND by the sound of it. I'm very surprised they landed both. If I was a TE, I would be concerned about snaps if there was anothe top tier TE in my class. That doesn't seem to be the case here especially with Long's offense now.
