Get me on the field, Coach. The rise to the top sometimes takes multiple routes.

I don't understand how the running back position is so under recruited for us the last few years

Not sure why we turned down Tirek Murphy. Seems like we really need a 2nd RB in this class

I understand why but I'm hoping the staff will revisit it. At this point, we can't expect Armstrong to stay healthy. I'm happy we have TJ Jones but he should be a complement back. Kyren will be a player for us.

C'Bo likely doesn't see minutes after this year. I know, that's premature but there should be too much talent for him to take minutes. Same with J. Smith. He's a good short yardage back and maybe he'll impress us this year but we should be recruiting well enough to make touches fiercely contested.

Goodness gracious

I was kind of hoping for this. Avery brings a dimension that's lacking from the other options - especially with Armstrong sidelined.

Although he is probably limited in what he can do when the ball isn't in his hands, it's the coaching staff's job to put him in positions to succeed. Javian Hawkins was certainly effective against ND.

I admire your optimism, but I saw nothing from AD last year to make me think he is capable at the position. I recall him running the ball with a lot of hesitation and getting alligator arms over the middle at WR. Just lacks those instincts. Perhaps I'm wrong and he has improved, but the staff moved him from the hybrid role after a short try-out for a reason.

BK is a master at coach speak, and believe this move is nothing short of desperation.

Avery is a poor mans CJ Sanders. That sounds mean but he came here to play QB so given that he has done ok. HE would do well to play somewhere with less depth. Would rather see Lenzy, Finke or Keys run the jet sweep.

Agree he’s probably faster than Jones or Smith but I don’t know what we saw of Avery at RB last year that would give much confidence.

I really feel like Davis is being badly mismanaged. Does anyone think he'll make a blip against Georgia? If not, why are we changing his position--again-- and ruining his development of a position--again-- for a fleeting advantage? I'd rather he stick to one position and be given the chance to be an actual difference maker.

With Notre Dame looking at PJ/Clark/true freshman Pyne next year, I wonder why they don't just ask him to compete at QB.

I don't understand how the running back position is so under recruited for us the last few years

Two dismissals, one kid failed to qualify. The problem isn't "under recruitment" it was the character of the kids we recruited.

This is the result of two things: Davis taking longer than anticipated to assimilate to the defensive side and our RBs slowly being decimated. We're now potentially down 2 RBs and if we have bad luck, we could lose another against NM.

We have to have some depth and Avery is a guy the can provide that. The staff really liked what he did at RB in fall camp last year, then he was given 5-10 touches and he didn't produce and put the ball on the ground. Kelly had seen enough and that experiment was over.

Hopefully something clicks this time if he gets some snaps. We need him and the rest of the RB room to go off.

You don't sacrifice current success for future rewards, at least not in CFB.

Yep. Our RB room looks quite different right now with CJ Holmes, Deon McIntosh and Markese Stepp sitting in it.

Which is why only taking one RB in both the ‘19 and ‘20 classes feels like playing with fire. Shit happens. You never know when your future RB1 is going to make the mistake of going to Macy’s with Kevin Stephenson.

I wish we had all four of those players - Stepherson, Holmes, McIntosh, and Stepp - on our roster. That would be something.

So was just looking at our current/projected depth chart from NDI.
Avery is listed as the #2 slot. Does anyone think he holds off KAR for #2 reps.

SR Isaiah Robertson still holding tightly onto that #4 spot... Geesh I thought he'd do more when he came to ND. IIRC, he saw a lot of action on STs his first year, and really nothing since.

To back up what Lax said yesterday in the game thread, it was so good to see Avery get a touchdown. The dude has been the ultimate team player his entire time at ND; he's at what, 4 position switches now? He's got some talent and has made key catches before, like the final drive of the Va Tech game last year. I sure hope to see him catch more touchdowns this year!

Maybe he can throw a couple of TD's for us this year too!

Great team player! He could've easily transferred, nice to see him stick it out.

I think we will definitely see him throw a pass or two this year.

And 100% agree with you and Lax that Avery Davis is a big time team player. He could have easily transferred like you mentioned. I’m hoping yesterday was only the beginning of his success in the slot.

He can definitely be a versatile player for ND-- like you said the slot. What about kick/punt returns, throw him in there under center and line Book up outside? Nice to see him on the field yesterday.

I’m fine with him getting a few wildcat snaps...
