Really enjoyed his game last night. He had shades of PJ on the 2nd and 3rd series with balls being thrown into the ground but that was corrected. Would like to see him use his legs a little more in the next game.

I like his earnestness, but he’s starting for us based on his experience, not his arm strength. The OL is going to need to mature quickly, or Coan’s shortcomings are going to be exploited against better opponents. FSU demonstrated the strength of their transfers, but we will play better teams this season. I don’t believe all the hype on FSU. We played a bad game in many ways.

With that said, I do appreciate his transfer and anticipate he will accomplish many positive things this season. His demeanor and work ethic will certainly assure some wins for us.

I still think they need to find ways of getting Buchner on the field, because time doesn’t wait for this team. It’s hard to imagine ND doing much in the CFP if we are lucky to gut this season out with some luck and grit. If Buchner has a better arm, we need to get him game experience moving forward, which means Rees will need to get this offense putting away lesser opponents early on. Or rather, Freeman not playing that prevent trash we can’t unsee.

If book is our QB last night, we don't win that game. (I'm a big fan of Ian)

Overall very pleased with his game. I thought he was a little skittish under pressure but nothing major. If there was one thing that stood out as a negative was he just doesn’t move all that well, especially laterally. Certainly not as well as I’d think from a former lax player.

But, that’s the type of stat line that we should have from a ND QB. 74% comp pct. 10.5 yds/att. 4 TD’s and 1 INT. I don’t know how many game Book had a 74 and 10.5 but I know it wasn’t many.

Edit: Looks like Book eclipsed those numbers 4 times. 1 in ‘20, 1 in ‘19, and 2 in ‘18.

I agree with calvegas04. Book was a gamer, he picks up a few first downs on his own last night and gives the defense something else to worry about. He probably avoids a few sacks too.
That said, I'm perfectly happy with Coan right now and would be happy to see a more pass happy offense to help stretch the field against Alabama or Clemson.

He seemed a little anxious at the beginning with the quick throws, but settled down and started going all through his reads as the game progressed.

Kelly got asked to clarify if Coan has another year of eligibility and he sheepishly admitted that he is going to have to look into it with the compliance mob.

Rethinking things, his accuracy issues may have been related to his finger. That and a shit ton of dropped passes.

I think he was just rushing everything in the first half because the staff pushed the idea that we need to get the ball out quicker. Things got better in the second half. Coan seemed to calm down. The pass blocking got better too.

He may have still had some stiffness in that dislocated finger as well…….takes more than a week to heal from that.

Much like Book, Coan will never be fully appreciated for what he does.

There is no Path to the CFP? thread going on right now without him. It just took Tommy and team a handful of weeks to figure out that tempo was the key.

That's because his faults are so maddening. You breathe on him and he goes down. He rarely throws the ball away. His escapability and mobility, especially for D1 Lax recruit, is like molasses. Lastly, due to all the above the defense can stack the box which limits our play book.

jack has great traits too, don't get me wrong. Even if he just had Books level of mobility to pair with his willingness to stretch the field consistently, Jack would be in a completely different stratosphere.

It's really curious what he would have done behind a more solid OL. Getting the ball out fast and shoring up some weaknesses certainly have shown he was not a bad choice at all. Before the Bye I think I would have started Pyne, but since then Coan has been money.

He doesn't have the mobility of Book, but Book wouldn't throw anything longer than about 15 yards unless he was forced to like in the VT game. He also had an aversion to going through his progressions when his primary was covered. He'd just pull it down and run. Lately Coan has also shown the ability to throw the ball away, so I see him growing in that area. He did scramble against GT, but overall he has been too stationary for most of the season. Both had their faults, but there were way more positives than negatives for both, which is basically what I'm saying.
