I think we'll be fine with Buckner, Pyne, and Angeli. Don't forget Powlus Jr too, stranger things have happened  I really don't know how Pyne got on BK's ignored list after spelling Coan earlier in the season. For a guy that wasn't getting 1st team reps he came out and balled despite that struggling OL at the beginning. Love Jack, he did an awesome job this year, I just think we need to get prepared for a '22/'23 run with the young guys because this offense is going to be stacked with this younger class. The more reps Buckner and/or Pyne get the better.

On Zorichs podcast yesterday, Lemming spoke as if it was already decided that Pyne was leaving. The dude seemed to know a lot of insider information so I’m actually not sure how much I believe. TIFWIW

I wouldn't blame him, but he was behind the Tommy train with the rest of the QBs too so I doubt a change in coaching has anything to do with it. Probably just a playing time thing, and I get it. Really liked his moxie in the Wisconsin and Cinci games.

Calling absolute BS on this, with the one caveat that BK was the reason he was leaving. Pyne was among the #PayTommyRees tweeters yesterday. All accounts are that he LOVES ND and wouldn't leave without his degree at a minimum.

I would be shocked if he left before getting his degree.

it looks to me that jack coan has one more year of eligibility left. looks like coan redshirted his freshman year then was injured in 2020 so it looks like he's only used three years of eligibility and has one more year left. if coan wants to come back i think you let him cause im still not sure what ND has in buchner.

2017 (freshman) - played in 3 games
2018 (sophomore) - played in 4 games
2019 (junior) - played in 13 games
2020 (senior) - played in 0 games
2021 (5th year) - played in 12 games
2022 (6th year) -

Some may argue Coan has two seasons of eligibility left, but looking at his career, he should have only one year remaining unless the NCAA grants a waiver. Coan played in only three games as a freshman at Wisconsin in 2017, but the four-game eligibility threshold did not take effect until 2018, and since two of those three games occurred in November, that cost Coan a season of eligibility under the former rules. Then the 2020 universal pandemic waiver did not do him much good, since a foot injury cost him the season, so that cushion of a year was essentially spent, anyway. Thus, Coan played in 2017, 2018 and 2019, all counting against his eligibility, leaving him with one more go-round.

I don’t think the new redshirt rule was in effect during his first two years. He’s played four years. How would he have another left?

I’d say I had a little bit more control over the offense at Notre Dame than I did at Wisconsin. The coaches at Notre Dame taught me a lot about run schemes and different types of big points for different plays. As far as protections, changing protections, certain protection rules, and specific looks a defense is giving us game-plan-wise, I feel like a lot was put on my plate at Notre Dame. It was a lot of fun to play with.”

I wonder if the staff had to teach Coan more than they expected. I mean the fact that in one offseason we had to teach a multi year P5 starter almost the entire mental side is kind of insane. Wisconsin probably taught him almost nothing besides a first and second read

I think its just Coan trying to make himself sound more valuable to NFL scouts.

I'm sure some of that is there, but all the previous QBs spoke very highly of Rees as a coach recently during the BK departure. Even guys that got benched, like Wimbush, had nothing but glowing praise. I think Book said he was the best coach he ever had. Phil might have been the only one that didn't say anything.

So, basically he was better than his high school QB coach and Mike Sanford then.

Well, he said that after BK left in December, so that would include the NFL Then again, I don't know who the Saints QB coach is at the moment, but I don't imagine there have been a lot of demands for a great coach up till now when Drew Brees was your starter.

Mentioned in the quick hitters as a QB standout at the East-West Shrine Bowl practices in an ESPN.com Insider article.

Quick-hitters

  • As what usually happens at most all-star contests, the quarterbacks got off to shaky starts. They are tasked with adjusting to the new verbiage of NFL playbooks, surroundings and throwing to unfamiliar targets. Following the first day of practices, Iowa State's Brock Purdy and Notre Dame's Jack Coan proved to be the best of the bunch. Both settled in and had multiple highlight throws during Monday's session. It wouldn't be surprising to see a team take a chance on either late in the draft or as priority free agents.

10-13 with a TD in the 1st half of the East-West Shrine game. May be on tap for the MVP award if he keeps it up.

Yeah, probably would have been, but for some reason, the coach for the West didn't put him back in the game. Meanwhile, the coach for the East kept putting their one QB with the hot hand back in and he won the MVP in a loss. Coan likely would have won it easily had he been given just 1 more possession.

Staying local by signing as UDFA with the Colts. Good situation for him IMO.

I can't believe he played the bowl game knowing he might get drafted or signed as an UDFA. He could have gotten hurt!
Congrats, Jack!

What QBs got drafted ahead of him? In retrospect his style is suited to pro ball. I think he will prove he was worthy of a draft pick.

I hope he can carve out a nice career as a backup in the league. Seems like a great teammate and humble kid. People that know him around here love him.

Did Tom Brady have a season as good as his? Jack has the size, the speed if he uses it right and arm strength, accuracy and intelligence to possibly start at QB.
