Just watched his film. Seems like the "poor man's" comparison may be Tate.

This is a very good comparison. Although I wouldn't say he is a "Poor man's" version. He is actually ranked higher than Tate was on 247, not that it matters.

Tate was a top 10 player in ESPN rankings. They get it right some time.

No knock on the kid, just no basis for expecting him to end up as good that absolute stud yet.

I don't know. Rankings were late on the kid, but what do we expect from a white receiver from Iowa? If you watch the tape, it's pretty easy to see how electric this kid is on the field. Then you add his sparq score and how he dogged fools at the opening.... Hell, I see this kid as a dude we need to get. I'll go on the record and eat crow if I'm wrong, but he's an elite talent in my book.

Reminds me of a story my nephew told me years ago. He was fast, big and had a number D1 offers. He's running as part of the track 4 X 100 relay team at the state fnals. His team was all white. He mentioned how many other schools were laughing at them since they were running against all black relay teams. The made it to the finals.

Not that it has anything to do with Martin, but there are some fast white kids out there. You just have to mine a little deeper to find them.

I agree. That's why I wasn't too concerned about OSB's decision.

Serious question, for those that think he's electric, what are you basing that on? I thought I saw he ran a 4.57 at the opening, where everyone seems to run a mysteriously inflated time. 4.57 at the opening for a wr isn't fast.

He had a 130 SPARQ score (2nd best by any receiver scored this year) and he burned some really good corners at the opening. Plus, turn on his highlight tape for about 15 seconds and it's pretty tough not to notice.

Just looking a 40 time isn't gonna tell you what a kid plays like. C'mon Koon.

Pro Tip: He also has bid squad potential. $5.

Being an electric athlete isn't all based on straight line speed. You here the coaches talk about how great of an athlete Studstill is and his biggest weakness is straight line speed.

Martin finished 13th at the opening in the Sparq competition. Now I don't view the numbers as accurate but I view them all as being judged on the same platform. He was a better overall athlete, under those circumstances, than Darnay Holmes, Salvon Ahmed, and some pretty awesome athletes.

Let me also say, does that automatically make him a better athlete, no. But it definitely puts him in that conversation.

I know a 40 doesn't tell all but I didn't know about his sparq or performance at the opening so I didn't knowm

Christian McCaffrey "only" runs a 4.5 right now but he's pretty damn electric. As Wooly and Lucky pointed out, 40 time is a limited tool in measuring ability. His SPARQ score, his tape, and the reviews of those who have seen him in person tell a pretty good story.

Per 247, Martin and his family visited a week or two back (they didn't specify the day), they came and went with no offer. We're focused on Black and Calvin at WR and it doesn't look like Martin will factor into the equation. Also, Loy mentioned that without offering on that visit, the Martin's have probably moved on.

This is a head scratcher to me, as I think he's an incredible athlete and a fairly polished WR.

Bummer to hear that. But, you have to trust the staff.

They must feel pretty confident about Black or Calvin.

To the 40 time discussion, I would also add that straight line speed doesn't always translate to game speed. Those that can cut and come out of breaks quicker than most make up for not having an outstanding 40 time.

Especially considering Calvin (IMO) isn't good, and Black is meh.

Oliver Martin is going to dominate CFB, mark it down.

Funny thing is that I could totally see us whiffing on both and grabbing some project that isn't half the prospect Martin. Maybe they've never heard the phrase "bird in hand" before?

I seriously think this will go down in infamy with some other Notre Dame "passes"... he might not quite be Javon Kearse or Luke Keuchly... but probably comparable to passing on Leonte Carroo for the likes of Justin Ferguson for a recent WR example.

Oliver Martin can flat out play. I don't even buy the idea that the other fish left in the sea are better than him, much less that we'll land them.

Couldn't agree more. I like the other guys a little more than you but Marin is, head and shoulders above those guys in terms of want.

LOL. Hyperbole much?

No. It's called an opinion.

Also, kind of hilarious this coming from you given your recent uninformed embarrassment of an opinion on DeShaun Watson, which includes emphatically stating he wasn't recruited by Georgia (factually incorrect) and wasn't "elite".

I question all info coming out about Martin.

No one's ever had a bead on him including our resident undercover ND reporter.

I don't know much about him other than he tests off the charts and he was named All Offense at the biggest camp/combine in the country. That and he's camped at ND multiple times.

Those things add up to... Me want 'ems.

In regards to Calvin. Kids electric in the return game and a good plan B if Young doesn't stick. Tough to justify 2 slots in the same class but Calvin's a player. Jes proved it at big camps, in 7v7 and during last season. Expect Nintendo numbers from him this year.

If only they'd have given me an expense account and turned me loose on Alloway last year. We wouldn't be talking about 3 star slots this cycle.

I hear ya. Calvin is ok to me. But, I do think Black is a stud, probably drinking the Kool aid because he is from my home state, I think Black could end up being a high NFL draft pick.

Isn't Black rumored to be a silent?
