After last season and the coaching situation we don't have atom of positives in our favor. Hard to sell right now.

We can still sell The University of Notre Dame! (just have to hope that's enough!)

This is a fairly short sighted post. There is still plenty of things ND can sell. Does it make it harder when you are 4-8, certainly, but the education is still "elite" where football programs are concerned. We play a national schedule with national television rights. Which obviously equals national exposure, substantially more so than Iowa, for example. Even in a 4-8 season, gameday atmosphere is still going to be top of the line. Under BK our offense has done a substantially better job of showcasing WR's than MSU, and with Iowa, it isn't even close. So, unless you are an utter moron, of a saleman, there is still plenty of things to sell.

Not directly related here but with news of the P5 potentially starting their own playoff, when does that get used as a negative against ND?

I don't think it could, because ND is still aspiring for the real playoff.

A bunch of mid-level schools starting a playoff shouldn't have an effect on ND.

It's hilarious that football players get convinced that they are better off at some generic state school over ND, Stanford, or Duke, just because State U had a better year, they have a better relationship with some coach, etc. It's a matter of getting so involved in the process that you miss the forest for the trees.

A kid could be better off at a State school, but a bad year at ND has nothing to do with it.

[Tom Rinaldi and his solemn piano] Gritty. Guile. Coach on the field. Gym rat. Moxie. From his mother's womb until now, and days forever more, Oliver Martin has been labeled these things...[camera pans to dystopian black and white Iowa farmland panorama....But wait! Camera work emerges to re-pan to a colorful sunrise over an October harvest morn]

Rinaldi cracks me up even though 99% of his stories do not.

Back to Martin; when you're quicker than fast and run precise routes, you're going to be categorized and stereotyped but Martin is an athletic guy, just not overly explosive. Other than having reliable hands, quickness is the most important trait for any receiver who doesn't make his living being 6-foot-5 and fast. For Martin, that quickness translates as he gets into his routes quickly and puts defensive backs on their heels. He sells his double-moves and routes very well. Getting separation is the name of the game and that's what he does.

Again, fit is going to be important -- I don't think he would be maximized in a spread that relies on truly explosive athleticism, but rather an offense where the receivers are running real routes. I do think with his ability to go up and get the ball and create separation with double-moves that he has a good chance to be both an inside and outside guy. This gives you the ability to do much more from a formational standpoint. I also think he could be extremely reliable in a heavy RPO-based offense as he gets open quick and is immediately hit with the ball.
Synopsis: I think he lacks some twitch but he is very natural and provides good versatility.

I'm not going to lean any which way with his kid or pay much attention to updates or talk about his recruitment. Just going to wait.

So sounds like all ND unless he goes with his leader?

I'll believe he's going to Iowa when I hear one of ND's recruiting gurus tell me that sources inside the Gug feel confident he's coming to ND.

In which case we should be prepared to lie and say that we didn't want him any way!

What's the fun in that Northern Neighbor?

None I guess. I just think he keeps it close to his chest, till he announces, as he's done all along. My final thought is that he really likes ND. His fam seems to want him @ ND. His good friend is going to play football at MSU, where he will visit soon. He like hometown Iowa where all his friends are going. Tough call.

Keep an eye on Iowa putting Brian Ferentz as new O.C. Folks in Iowa seem to think that gets Oliver's attention.

Sounds like he's going to Iowa........IOWA!
You know, recuiting it like a good case of STD's A lot of fun, excitement and all around enjoyment at the beginning, then you wake up from a weekend bender fueled by alcohol and adderall and get "that text" that tells you someone you slept with has gonorrhea.
In the end, following recuiting just isn't worth it.

Yup. It's why you should only eat Illinois sweet corn. Best damn corn you'll ever eat, and you'll still want to get the hell out of the state.
