Total guess but I'd think with news of charges being dropped by July 1st if he remains on good behavior. He could be back on the squad in Brian Kelly's pre-training camp presser in late July or early August. Whenever that happens. If he has a chance to come back, I'm coming back because there might not be another power 5 program that can offer you playing time at the RB position like ND can.

A question for the Irish Illustrated podcast was “who will get more touches in 2018...Javon McKinley or CJ Holmes?”

Despite Holmes not being on the team right now, all three guys said they expect Holmes to have more carries than McKinley has catches.

They added that McIntosh is probably gone for good but they think Holmes can earn his way back.

Kind of a silly question as it’s hard for any WR to have as many catches as his depth-chart equivalent at RB has carries. But good to hear they’re optimistic CJ gets back onto the team.
Really we need both of them to contribute on offense next year (and start the year after).

If CJ makes it back on the team, is it conceivable he's #2 or even #1 on the depth chart?

I would say 2b is a possibility

Dex should be 1

Jone/CJ could be 2a/2b as they are very different runners

The experts think TJ Jr is the sure-fire #1 next year, and that the question is whether Dex is a 1a or a clear #2.

Yeah, coaches apparently love Tony Jones and have loved him since his first practice. Which is.... fine. I don't really see it, but everyone else does.

I think we should expect Dexter to get 10 carries a game next year though. I will be very surprised if he finishes the year with less than 100 carries.

according to II TJ Jr's issues are that he never takes rehab seriously and thus minor injuries take him longer to overcome than a more focused player.

I didn't see it this year, but what do I know. But out of curiosity...what experts?

Edit

Maybe TJ is the only RB that didn't hang around Stepherson. Dex was in the car, CJ the mall and Deon?

I think the coaches view TJ as more well-rounded with blocking and catching out of the backfield

There’s no sense debating which RB is the better #1 guy until they can both prove they can stay healthy. They stuggled with it last season. TJ Jr was criticized for his commitment to rehab & we have all heard DWs issues with pass pro.

he carries around some bad weight...wonder if he trimmed up some if that wouldn't help some of his "nagging" injuries

Do you think this has more to do with TJ being a true #1 back or the coaches not having faith in Dex's game and/or ability to carry #1 carries?

No. The coaches can love multiple players at a single position. Barring injuries, I would expect Dex and TJ to both have a healthy number of carries this coming season so it's almost pointless to try and deduce what the coaches think right now.

There is a whole offseason that must commence.

They do? Who does?

Nearly every beat reporter, writer, and ND analyst got the hint prior to '17 that TJ Jr was a pretty clear number 2 behind Josh Adams, based on the amount of work he was getting.

His injuries might have changed that outlook, had Dex not also encountered some nagging issues.

I would think it's about the fact that TJ Jr is viable on any down and doesn't limit the playbook at all, whereas Dex might limit things based on his pass-pro issues and limitations as a pass catcher (which is funny, because his TD catch against MSU was amazing).

Dex is more likely to hit a home run, but TJ Jr is going to be more consistent down-to-down.

I hope TJ Jr proves to the fans he's worthy of these discussions. So far, he's looked slow through the hole and often appears to make the wrong read.

He's the prototypical size and he has a compact frame but I've been mostly unimpressed so far. Really hope he blows the doors off this fall.

I was actually more impressed with Deon than TJ.

I was thinking that Dex was a casualty of choice of friends (Redfield and Stepherson).

I was hoping before the shop lifting that in 2018, CJ would emerge as a viable option to make up for some of Adams carries if he went pro.

Now it could be just me, but while TJ does have size and apparently great hands (no visual evidence of this in game play btw) he appears relatively slow for a feature P5 RB

Agree TJ appears to be more versatile than Dex - at least circa 2017 - and was fine as a backup to Adams. But he just seems like a short-yardage banger, based on what we’ve seen. That’s fine as a backup to Adams, and has its place in our offense going forward. But three yards and a cloud of dust is limiting in an RB1. Dex has way more upside, not just for home runs but for eight-yard chunk plays too.
Best case, IMO, is Dex picking up pass pro enough to win a majority of carries, with TJ also contributing a lot of snaps. Either Jahmir or, hopefully, CJ, round things out in the third spot.

I agree for the record. The best thing for this offense is if Dex answers all of the questions that have seemingly been holding him back, because he's a big play waiting to happen with his wiggle, burst, and wayyyyy better top speed than TJ Jr.

I was just trying to relay what/why the experts all pencil in TJ Jr as the next man up rather than Dex.

My question is if the starting QB has anything to do with who's on the field at RB... if Wimbush wins the job and somehow learns to run a TRUE zone-read, he and Dex would be a nightmare for defenses with their combined burst and ability to abuse whoever the unblocked man is. Also factor in that Wimbush is probably in the shotgun nearly 100% of the time, and those stretch runs fit Dex better than TJ Jr.

On the flip side, TJ Jr might fit better into a backfield lead by Ian Book, because even though Book is mobile, they would be doing a lot more play-action/rollout that would take advantage of TJ's skill set, especially if they are under-center and running downhill as a base, like in 2011 and parts of '10 and '12.

Ugh. Well at least it shows ND morale over PSU. Not like PSU should have any moral or ethics after what happened there.

His sister goes to PSU. I wouldn’t assume anything just yet.

That is mighty interesting. I’ve mentioned it before, probably not a Top 25 Power 5 program that can offer CJ Holmes or Deon McIntosh the depth chart that ND has. Getting one back would be a major boost
