It's official, Hayes has a torn labrum. Done for the season.

or

ND just signed a 5* DE in the '20 class who will start as a freshman.

That is devastating. His past injury issues has come back to haunt him.

You have to hope now that he redshirts this year and comes back 100% next year. Jamie Jones you are up!

Absolutely brutal. To make it this far without any injuries during his collegiate career and it to happen now.

Per Eric Hansen of SBT:

Brian Kelly said that using the redshirt rule to bring back DE Daelin Hayes in 2020 is "highly possible" from the standpoint of both sides. Seems like a win-win for ND and Hayes, who would be a starter in 2020.

Damn, tough luck for Daelin, who was really coming on strong. I'm hoping he can kill it next year.

Side note, but I bet this kills Jamir's chances of redshirting this year. I'll take that trade though. 5th year Daelin for 5th year Jamir? Oh yeah

I hate it for him, and would never wish injury on him, but perhaps this will be a blessing in disguise for him. If he recovers well, it's possible he is more of a showcased DE next year.

Get well soon big guy.

This is a huge loss. It could be argued that until last night he was one of our most impactful defenders. Get well, Daelin. You'll overcome this.

Upset for Daelin obviously. Our chances of winning out just took a big hit too. He was probably the best DL of the year thus far.

I wonder if that was Okwara finally getting his motor running hot. Hopefully it’s his wake up call.

It sucks losing a talent like Daelin but I think we have the talent to replace him. It’s the Crawford injury’s that could be more impactful in that regards imo. Wonder if they give Wallace or Houston a shot or just slide one of the safeties into the slot.

Wonder if this will be a career ender for him. That is a 3rd torn labrum on the same shoulder... how easily can that be surgically repaired? I would guess he is either going to have serious mobility or stability issues moving forward. Huge shame with how he was playing himself into being a draft pick.

If he comes back, next years DL gets that much better. With the way DT’s are improving, that unit would be insane.

Yeah everyone assuming he will just have surgery, rehab and be 100% for Spring ball needs to take that into account. Look at how many great college players’ career were ended (either in college or the NFL) b/c of recurrent shoulder issues. Regardless of how great he performs, getting someone to invest a high draft pick on him w/ that shoulder history will be a longshot

I would assume he has had labrum repair surgery at some point already? Maybe when he got hurt in high school? It's pretty standard after a couple of dislocations, because once you pop it out once, it comes out easier unless they surgically repair your labrum.
So, yeah, if he's already had surgery and it's still coming out, that wouldn't seem good. At a certain level, recurring shoulder dislocations are a body type issue. Some people are just prone to it (speaking from personal experience). There's only so much you can do.

A tough day for the young man. Best wishes for a healthy recovery whether his future is on the gridiron or not.

Is this fact? I only remember the high school labrum tear. Did he have one in college as well? And are we certain it's the same shoulder?

Not that every injury is the same, but my freshman year of college ball I tore my labrum “around the clock.” They describe the tear by comparing it to a clock since it s a circular joint, so you could have a 10-2 tear and etc. Along with my tear being the entire joint, it was also completely torn and had nothing left to fuse or anchor back down so they simply cleaned everything up and trimmed the frays. With all of that said, my mobility and functionality of my shoulder are great today and it’s little things things that are limited. But i rehabbed for baseball and not to crash into 300 pound lineman and bench press then off of me. But Lax makes a great point and this is a legitimate concern, but with my experience I don’t think it’s an automatic career ender even if it’s as bad as it could be like mine.

This piece of an NBCSports article mentions another college injury, shoulder stinger, but it appears he only missed one game. It also mentions "high school shoulder injuries" (note that's plural).

CAREER TO DATE
Hayes was primed to overcome high school shoulder injuries to play every game of his Irish career before a stinger, indeed to his shoulder, sidelined him at Virginia Tech last year. By his own admission later on, the injury hindered him for longer than just the one missed week. It came at an unfortunate time, as he had found a groove in the two weeks prior, racking up 10 total tackles with 2.5 for loss against Wake Forest and Stanford.

2016: 12 games; 11 tackles, one forced fumble.
2017: 13 games, 12 starts; 30 tackles including 6.5 for loss and three sacks, along with one pass breakup and two fumbles recovered.
2018: 12 games, one start; 31 tackles with five for loss including two sacks; one pass breakup and one fumble recovered.

Hoping it's more stinger and they were being cautious with him. I guess we should know more today?

Was he injured during the game or at practice?

The current labrum tear was a game injury. The article, dated July 21, 2019, that I posted discussed his history of injuries in high school and college. There was discussion on how many labrum tears he has had and when.

Hayes announced he is coming back for a 5th year. If he can return to form with what we saw to start this year, that will be an elite value add for 2020.

I'm a 3 labrum repair survivor. My last one was in my late 30's. I got 10 years of hardcore hoops action out of it before I passed the torch. Daelin will be fine. Labrum repairs are like Tommy John's, they've perfected it. The DBack's guy did my last one and it was 100%.

*** My chickiepoo just asked what I was doing, told her I was commenting on Daelin Hayes' shoulder injury and she was like, "He hurt it again? Is it the same one he hurt in HS that stopped us from seeing him play against JSerra (2014) when we were in Orange County?"

Yeah buddy, she's an absolute keeper. We came home after the UVa game and she flew the ND flag for the W before I could get to it.
