I don't recall that we told Hamlin we were full, I thought we were eliminated very shortly after Pride committed.

Right. And the reason we were eliminated after Pride committed was supposedly because we told Hamlin we only had one DB spot left and Pride took it. These were just reports I remember reading and I have NO IDEA if they are true but I really hope not. Could have just been rumors. Who knows.

I think the staff/fans need to make piece with Redifeld at FS. SS is a nightmare (not that it was in great shape prior to this transfer) and we need to stick with the only experienced guy at FS and try to find someone to step up at SS.

No peace will ever be made with Max for me. He burned his bridge after his shenanigans during the bowl prep. I lost any and all faith in him, sorry. I'd play Cage at safety over Max.

I thought he was late, which while unfortunate and irresponsible would not seem to warrant this level of resentment. Maybe it was more than tardiness and I am just uninformed?

However, Kelly said Studstill has been running with the first team much of the past week at free safety, meaning he’s in direct competition with Redfield for a starting job.

Unlike Redfield, who often frustrated with the coaching staff the past three years, Studstill appears to have won over the coaches immediately.

“He’s just a natural player. It comes easy to him,” Kelly said. “Just flows easily to him. It’s not hard to him. He’s had no set back in terms of the learning curve. He had one mistake today, but it really comes easy to him.”

Fvcking idiot VanGorder and his defense that is too difficult for guys to pick up, even 3 or 4 years into the system....

I forgot that Williams was on the Freshman All American team... Yes, it stinks we lost depth, but I don't think losing a guy who wasn't in our two deeps as a reason to adjust how we recruit, or go about our job.

Take all big time athletes. With our constant stream of transfers and medical retirements start over signing. In the end we are always short. Then they have to position shift because of need. But crap, we get soooo many transfers. And I firmly believe more are to come.

Great post before mine

I really thought he had a chance to be good for us. TO bad it didn't work out but good job to the coaches getting a few good players for that spot in 16.

Kmoose, our defense wasn't too hard for OSU, Stanford, and Clemson to figure out. bVG is hurting this team in so many ways

Those were the #4,#3 and #2 teams in the final polls. They didn't have too hard of a time figuring out anybody.

You got a pretty high bar there. ha

Clemson really only had one good drive on the defense...the opening drive. Their other points were scored on short fields caused by either an Irish turnover or a shanked punt. And by the time we played Stanford and OSU (our last 2 games) we were decimated by injuries and suspensions to key players. Any defense in the country would have taken a few steps back with that stuff factored in. And like Wooly said...Clemson, OSU and Stanford were top tier teams last year.

Not saying BVG is great or even good but there were a lot of factors in play (in addition to BVG's coaching) as to why the defense was subpar last year.

Not to mention that I didn't even say anything about the defense stopping other teams. My comment was directed at those who tried to crucify BVG all season long by saying that his scheme was too difficult for guys to pick up. Well..................Studstill is picking it up just fine it seems.

Yeah. Feels like something academic or disciplinary, especially if this has been floating around for a month. Depth chart reasons make no sense right now.

Either way, I'm all for Redfield at SS and holding a bake off for the best free. At this point we kind of need to reboot the whole defensive backfield. (Minus Cole Luke of course) good news is we've apparently got the young guys to do it.

4% of the D is being implemented right now and this is the season to blow smoke up fr assess. Max at fs and tranquil at ss will be just fine with Butler and studstill is a very solid 2 deep

Really like the way this kid was built. Looking at our safety depth chart no one is transferring because they thought playing time wasn't available. We are thinner there then my x's ass, More to the story then what we know. I'll do some digging

I bet if I searched back in Fall camp of 2013, I could find a quote about how Max was picking up the defense just fine in his first few days.

Coach speak is great if it is true/comes to fruition. But I'm not putting any stock in the bolded until I see Studstill out there not blowing coverages.

What is safety depth looking like right now? This is what I can think of off the top of my head.

FS: Studstill, Redfield, Elliot
SS: Tranquill, Sebastian, Perry, Morgan

Yeah, there are a lot of young guys in there but that group as a whole is athletic af. Is Ashton White a safety now?

I would like to see Ashton in that 4th FS slot. That would be a nice depth chart, albeit young.

Also... Studstill isn't in front of Redfield, I don't care if he practiced with the 1's yesterday. One practice doesn't put him as the starter.

I'm beating on a dead horse but this list is terrifying from a health/experience perspective.

I kinda figured that lol. I kinda just put Studstill in front of Redfield because thats who I want starting. Redfield has had plenty of opportunities to lock down his starting spot and he still hasn't done it. Last year we saw him either get benched or didn't even play a few times and Farley played instead. I think Redfield only played last year because the coaches didn't think they had anyone else. With the staff being very high on both Studstill and Elliot, Redfield should be feeling nervous as hell right now

Green = Youth
Orange = Injury History

Scary. Especially when the only one not lit up is someone everyone on the board wants to sit behind a true freshman. ha.

I agree with you on the health perspective. But there is only one way for these kids to gain experience and they have to gain it eventually

Actually, there are two ways:

1) Get playing time spelling a regular starter.
2) Getting thrown into the fire when a starter goes down.

I like option 1 a hell of a lot better than option 2.

Too bad the safety depth can't be like the o-line and wide receiver depth haha.

Yea I like option 1 a lot better. And I think most of us have pretty high expectations for next season. That's not the kind of safety situation you want if contending for the playoffs is the goal.
