If he was going to be a malcontent in the locker room then better to move on. We’ll see how bad we miss him. I’m sure his production will be exceeded by anyone who takes his place. He was a small DT playing DE imo. I would rather see someone leave then squeeze a player out who loses their scholarship. How many of these work out? Can someone provide some examples?
Very few. Which is why it makes even less sense. I'm trying to think of an outbound 5Y from ND who's done well enough at his new school to make the NFL. Anyone?
If a guy's not good enough to start at Notre Dame as a senior, it's hard to see how starting at a lesser program will really help his NFL standing. And starting is no guarantee, especially since he's now missed spring ball at whatever school he lands on. Even if Jay was getting jumped on the depth chart with us, he turned a corner last year and was still going to be a regular player on one of the better defensive fronts in the country. He could have parlayed that into an UDFA situation.
This just feels like a lose-lose for all involved. Good on Jay for getting his degree, and sticking out some earlier tough times. But he's a frustrating loss.
