Or get pushed back. He is a hell of a talent...but sh!t. Greer took some snaps, he wasn't superman but played good. He moved better laterally and got to the ball.

Martini plays the run better than Morgan IMO. And Neither pay the pass great. I'd like to see more split time until one takes the job from the other.

On Louisville's Rushing TD where they brought in a heavy set and ran off tackle to the left, the ND defense seemed really confused pre snap, trying to shuffle to the right. Not 100% sure but the LB's (Jaylon and Morgan) seemed really all over the place. It was ugly.

I think our D looks like that 75% of the time. We are always a step late off the ball because we are trying to get lined up. We are playing a lot of youth. Simplify the D so we aren't looking lost pre snap.

Btw completely stupid bone headed hit on the QB

Yup, but at least it came from effort.

Linebackers often take two full seasons to develop. Martini is ahead of the curve, which isn't surprising when you look at his high school film. There is no reason to believe that Morgan won't get there with more and more reps.

Effort is half the battle. Everything else will come with experience.

I was at the top of the stadium yesterday and Nyles was there to make plays most of the time but did not get it done. A year of strength training and working on technique will do wonders for him.

I thought Greer looked pretty good when he replaced Nyles. All of our young kids missed tackles yesterday and some tackles were significant.

I am disappointed at our record but I love our young kids. Some of these kids were playing high school football at this time last year. Kelly has made some ??? calls this year but I believe in him to get things turned around! I love ND no matter what because they stand for what is right in college sports and I find comfort in having my kids root for a college that has integrity!

Congrats to Nyles! Great news for one of our younger players that has showed lots of promise. I think he will be very special next year after a year under his belt. He is a hard hitting guy that definently makes people take notice.

Clearly, they didn't actually watch the film. Martini outplayed him on every level in limited reps and with virtually no practice at MIKE before being thrust on the field.

He's got a LONG way to go. But the physical tools are there to be special.

I agree! I was a bit surprised by this announcement, because clearly has much more to do. Regardless, I'm happy for him and also see his untapped potential.

Hope he is ready for LSU because their FB will be meeting him in the hole time and time again...

This might be an easier game for him. Same reads over and over again. Obviously a lot more talent, but typically ND plays well against a "conventional" offense. Although I'm not sure what a conventional offense is anymore :)

Totally Agree. When he basically has to do a Guard/fullback read, his life will be much easier in terms of the "mental" game

The difference will be his physical strength vs. the FB's. If their FB is a junior or senior they probably have an advantage on those power plays.

Wow, very surprised, i think Martini (like someone said before) outplayed him. IMO he struggles catching up once taking a misstep on play action or when over pursuing and basically he is often in the wrong place at the wrong time. He is getting a lot of hype.

I will bow to these experts who are seeing things that I am not. Happy to think that what to me looked like misreading of gaps and semi-hopeless pass defense is apparently my error rather than his.

.... and I thought Martini really looked great, but once again.....

i thought the same thing but then i thought potentially it was done because he was a highly rated recruit coming out and they lacked other people to place there...

It's more about who he was and where he's at than what he did. Martini did play more effectively but Morgan was extremely impressive even when heading in the wrong direction. No italics.

He's going to be great and having him, both the JS's and a full roster of experienced LB's next year. If injury doesn't do its thing again, this corp is gonna be funky.

I think two things were pretty apparent. 1. Nyles has some very impressive tangible traits, more so than Martini. 2. Martini was able to slow the game down and understand his reads much better. If Nyles can do that, he'll be a very special player. I'm very interested to see where Martini gets reps this spring and summer.

Exactly. Morgan is going to be at worst a guy who blows up plays 90% of the time but allows that 10% to keep him from that highest rung. There is no wait in his game. He reacts and closes with bad intentions, it's just to often the wrong spots at this point. Another thing to remember is he played weak high school competition in Chicago's far southern suburbs, not Chicago's Catholic League, Cali's Trinity League or Indy's MIC. His brain needs time to catch up to his body when playing against a Power 5 schedule. It will.

My guess for the depth chart:

WILL:
Smith
Martini
Coney
Randolph

MIKE:
Schmidt/Morgan
Deeb/Grace

SAM:
Onwualu
Barajas (eventually takes over at Will)
Bilal

Onwuala had the weirdest season of any starting, non-OL ever.

To me, I didn't notice him. He was both 1) not so bad that he was noticed and 2) not good enough to be noticed.

His whole season flew under my radar.

All in all he's still an unknown for me with the expectation that he'll get better. With that said, I do expect some competition there this offseason as it will be interesting to see if they do indeed try and get Morgan and Schmidt on the field at the same time. Or if somebody else can make a push. I don't think he did enough to lock that spot down but wasn't bad enough that its a given.

dude was hardly on the field because of the use of the nickel package to be fair.

Yeah, but it was his first year at the position. I think he made a tackle/hit against Navy that really stopped their momentum in the fourth quarter. Relatively quiet otherwise.

I think it's going to be tough for an underclassmen to take his spot, though. He's the type of player coaches love to coach - selfless, intense, and hustles. IMO, it will take a special camp for one of the freshman to take reps away from him.

I'm not saying he is good or bad. I'm just saying it's crazy that he's a starting LB for the team I watch every minute of, and if someone asked me how he did my reaction would be 'Sh!t, I forgot he even started'.

Somewhere there was a rumor that BVG might try to get JSmith, JSchmidt, and Morgan all out there at the three positions. Maybe that's feldercarb, but it's an interesting thought.

... but also, with the 21st century offenses we face, our nickel should still be played a lot, stealing reps.
