I understand not wanting to get hurt but if he can't fulfill his end of the athletic scholarship, Stanford should never give him a diploma.

If guys like this were smart, they'd do a colon cleanse the day of the game and say they have the flu. Much better optic.

But like phgeek said - the scholarship language would need to change that they are committed to playing in every game that Stanford participates in, if the kid is deemed healthy to play/and eligible.

Probably as it stands, he fulfilled his end of the scholarship deal - by simply playing.

It's like Trump writing off a billion dollars of losses and not paying federal for years - don't blame me, blame the government for allowing me to do so.

Yea, it would look better to the outside.

I do appreciate guys in this boat being honest, which allows everybody to see the issue for what it is.

Maybe the NCAA could purchase these guys insurance for the bowl game on top of what they have. I don't know what the answer is...but I don't like this.

I totally get it and grew up extremely poor so I'd be tempted to do the same if I were ~20 and about to get paid, but this isn't right or fair to the Cardinal/his teammates.

What are these kids gonna do if they're in a contract year and end up on a bad team like the Browns, Bears, or Panthers where there's nothing to play for but the coach's job for the last couple games?

If you don't see the difference between getting paid to play a game, and a kid risking injury and costing him millions to play in a meaningless bowl that he isn't getting paid to play in... Then I don't know what to tell you

I'm probably in the minority here but I think the decision made by McCaffrey and Fournette is incredibly selfish and self-centered. You grinded with your brothers for years in the weight room and locker room for years and you can't play 1 more game with them? And I'm not buying the "avoiding injury" bull shit. Injuries are a part of the game. If they were truly worried about getting injured and having their draft stock take a hit, then why didn't they stop playing when they realized that it was mathematically impossible to win their conference?

If this keeps happening then it will, in my opinion, trickle down to the 5 and 4 star recruits in high school. If they don't have a chance in the high school playoffs then they'll start sitting out or just taking a bunch of plays off.

It shows a sickening amount of entitlement by those two.

I love how people complain about kids not being paid to play and then they essentially go out and steal Stanford's money by sitting out a bowl game while healthy.

This is the soft mentality this age group has. True colors will always come out. I hope the university doesn't let the him travel with the team he shouldn't get that opportunity when you turn your back on your team mates. Selfish

Every analogy is imperfect, but the one that I gave is about as close to his current situation as anything else.

What I see is a kid who's refusing to fulfill his obligation. He's receiving an athletic scholarship to play football. Is he suffering from an injury right now? No, he's played every game since the ND game. If he was questionable, then fine, sit out the bowl game and good luck to you. But he's not. NFL players play "meaningless games" all the time. This is his contract year and he is refusing to play.

After seeing what happened to Jaylon, I 100% would not care if an ND player who was set to be a high draft pick sat out any non-playoff bowl game.

You aren't getting a cut of the bowl money (I know, they get sweet bowl swag, but that's nothing compared to what the school and conference get in the millions), so don't risk your future if it's not for a championship.

Is the risk of serious injury greater than the negative attention he just drew to himself? I would think not.

And shit, no one is saying the kid needs to play 75 snaps. Go out there for every other series or something if you are that worried.

Shame on the people who raised and coddled these millenials. A generational f*ck up in its own right.

Why play any games if your team is no longer going to make the playoffs?

Answer: you got a scholarship to play football. You are essentially breaking your contract if you sit out. Says something about character.

I totally get this decision. In fact, I wouldn't blame a kid at all if he just sat out his whole college career. I mean, why take a chance on getting injured? Just go ahead and start training for the NFL as soon as you graduate High School. Hire an agent who will pay your living/training expenses for the 3 years that you have to wait, and just train like Ivan Drago.

His NFL scouting report might have a note about how he's selfish, now, but I bet no team in the NFL will actually care one bit if they're drafting a healthy, versatile athlete.

Any other negative attention doesn't matter haha.

a trickle can become a flood, how far away from a player withdrawing from school and skipping a season to prepare for the draft?

He is going to get asked about it in every single interview and I also think he is going to have opponents try and jack him up for being soft.

You gotta remember, the question is play and maybe get injured. It's not remotely close to a guarantee. Just because it happened to Jaylon doesn't mean it will happen to him.

And isn't this what insurance is for? Jaylon got $1 Million after taxes I believe, and would have gotten an additional $100K after taxes for every pick in the 2nd round had the Cowboys not still taken him.

You don't lose everything/much if you're going to go that high anyway. Had Jaylon not gotten drafted, I think he would have made a total of 5 Million after taxes (that's about $10 Million for these guys with taxes), so the risk is not that bad. Jaylon just happened to be so good that he still got drafted super high.

I think this move is Longo soft.

Idk how far... we almost got it with Fournette. But I'm not gonna blame someone for deciding to leave school and protect their future, as long as their scholarship paperwork allows for it. College football is a business, and players ARE compensated via their education, but I believe that a guy like McCaffrey already fulfilled his end of the bargain. The Sun Bowl isn't worth risking his future.

DISCLAIMER: I personally would not sit out any game, regardless of my future earning potential. But I'm not gonna vilify and call these kids quitters for doing what they believe is in their best interest.

It's funny how he wants to get started early on draft prep when theres a very good chance he won't even get drafted in the first round.

I've read from a few sites that he might not even be a running back in the NFL

They would get their scholarship dropped.

i just think it's a bad move for the kid, its bad enough he's from a wealthy family and went to stanford but so many NFL scouts/coaches are gonna label him as entitled. In the end him skipping the game is gonna be more hassle than its worth. He should just play and ask the OC to limit his carries but keep it on the downlow

What negative reaction? I have read nothing but positive tweets praising his decision from media and former players... He says he has 100% support from team mates so I am assuming they are on board.. Bowl games don't matter, and I don't see why people have a problem.
