I doubt the Cowboys see Jaylon as a liability at this point. For one, their own surgeon did the operation on Jaylon, so no one is more familiar with the damage and possibly recovery than they are. If they feel he should come back in 2017 with no issues, then I imagine they got the steal of the draft.

Cowboys placed him on the Non-Football Injury List which was no surprise. Based upon Jaylon's comments, it sounds like things are slowly getting better.
Jaylon Smith Placed On NFI, But Feeling Good About Rehab Progress | Dallas Cowboys

FRISCO, Texas – It’s not a surprising development, but Jaylon Smith won’t be making his Cowboys debut at any point in the first half of this season.

The Cowboys moved Smith to the reserve Non-Football Injury list on Tuesday as part of their move toward the NFL’s 75-man roster limit. That decision makes Smith unavailable for the first six weeks of the regular season.

It seems unlikely the rookie linebacker will play a role at all in 2016. But after that six-week wait, the Cowboys will have a brief window where they can decide whether to work him into practice or shut him down for the year.

In the meantime, Smith has been continuing his regimen of strength and rehab work with the Cowboys’ athletic training staff, and he can see the progress.

“Day by day, the feeling is getting so much better,” he said. “I’m able to do a lot more. I’m actually running now, doing some actual football drills – linebacker drills and stuff like that.”

Smith is a mainstay at practices, working off to the side with the athletic training staff. They’re still just small steps in a long process, but he said that -- from footwork drills to working on resistance cords -- he’s able to see a difference in what he can do.

“A lot more, which transfers to the field,” he said. “And that’s why I’m able to do the cords and do ladders and all these different types of things that you guys see that previously I wasn’t able to do. We’re moving forward.”

Of course, the line of questioning will always go back to Smith’s peroneal nerve. The 22-year-old said he’s seeing positive developments, but it’s not an issue with a specific timeline for return. All the Cowboys can do is continue to monitor the situation.

“I think, with my situation it’s unique, because we don’t have a timetable for when I’ll be back,” Smith said. “But just controlling what I can control, keeping a positive attitude is always first and foremost.”
While he waits, Smith will continue working. He said he’s back up to his playing weight of 245 pounds, and he’s gained his strength back. Now, he wants to work on his power, and continue to ready himself for when he might be able to play again.

“Getting more explosive, my squats, the velocity in which I lift the heavy weight,” he said. “Out on the field, doing a lot more lateral planting and getting myself into football mode and getting this nerve keep coming back.”

Cowboys’ Jaylon Smith says top college players should not sit

The savior for the Dallas Cowboys defense looks great on the practice field, even though he can only work by himself with a trainer while the rest of the team plays football.

To the naked eye, Cowboys second-round draft pick Jaylon Smith is fine.

“I feel great,” he said. “I feel fantastic. It’s hard to put it in words, but the way I feel — I feel amazing. It’s just time. I am 21 and you can’t rush it. I am going to be out there as soon as I get cleared. If God wants that to be this year, it’s going to happen. If not, so be it.”

He does not limp, walk slowly or show any signs that he is eight months removed from tearing his left ACL and MCL in the final football game of his college career.

The earliest we will see the Jaylon Smith who was projected to be a top-10 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft is in 2017.

Despite Smith’s past, he has the best attitude for any player contemplating whether to shut it down as a junior, or a senior, to avoid injury — potentially damaging their bank account.

“I would say play. I would say to insure yourself for the worst-case scenario, but to play,” he said. “I am blessed to be here. I am on America’s Team playing with my brother [fullback Rod Smith]. I would not change it one bit. If it wasn’t supposed to happen, it would not have happened.”

as an eagles fan, i hope jaylon is the greatest linebacker to ever play the game

As a Browns fan, if you clowns can go winless the rest of the season, that'd be great... after we get two top five picks you guys can win a bunch of games and stuff.... feel free.

Cowboys plan to activate Jaylon Smith

Cowboys VP Steven Jones announced the news on local Dallas radio, telling 105.3 The Fan that Smith can help the team as the season continues, even if it’s only in practices. From the Dallas News:

“That doesn’t mean anything with change with Jaylon in terms of his routine,” he said. “I don’t actually see him [returning to the field], even though he’s eligible to practice — just to extend your period. If we weren’t to activate him, then they would certainly be done if they don’t start practicing. . . .

“So really it’ll just be Jaylon and McFadden that we’d give that shot to keep them alive,” Jones said. “And McFadden will actually return to practice full bore. But Jaylon’s routine won’t change at the moment.”

It sounds like they are activating him with the idea that he may come to be available at some point still this season. No timeline for that given, however.

This is pretty much a no brainer to me. No downside, unless, for whatever reason they are rushing him back. It doesn't sound like that at all though. It sounds like they are willing to activate him, so he can practice and "in case" he can make an impact at any point the rest of the season.

Reports are that his nerve is regenerating. Seems about on pace for the original time line

I think it will be more to get him some playing time (maybe not a lot) so he can get that rookie season adjustment out of the way. Otherwise he starts next year basically as a rookie having to learn and adjust to the speed of the game and the improvement in the talent he will face each week.
