The spread CAN be a great passing scheme (TX Tech, OkSt...) but it is all about spreading out the defense, creating mismatches, and putting your athletes in places to make plays. This can be and has always been a key piece to BKs Spread (back to his days at Grand Valley when my team used to play against him) which is not like the TX Tech offense and more like an Oregon. I believe BK offense will begin to improve on the pass, with a QB that is able to make all the throws but his offense will opperate just fine putting a lil emphasis on the run.

Perspective, gentlemen, perspective. We scored over 90% of the time with this offense when there was not a serious "human" error [i.e. turnover, penalty] on the drive. Kelly said in a presscon that the staff had shown him the data that they'd scored nearly every time, when you added in the "no seriously negative play" [like a sack, for instance]. In other words, when eliminating the things which have nothing to do with the actual offensive design...The Kelly offense works when the players don't stop it themselves.

As to elite running backs like Isaac: the spread can make an elite RB a star, just like the old, old Detroit Lions "silver stretch" [four-wides] opened the field so much that it max'd out Barry Sanders' skills. [People forget that Sanders had a lot more trouble later in his career when the Lions abandoned that offense for a more traditional set]. If an elite RB wants some very big YPC numbers, something like Kelly's spread will get that for him.

As to the pros: there are a lot more spread-type sets showing up all the time --- very like Kelly's in many ways. One RB standing back with the QB in shotgun, or one back with spread field receivers and QB under center but no FB [we do that a little]. I see no reason why a single back offense cannot attract pro-attention to the player. That RB is required to be good at picking up pass-rushers in that/our offense, and this is becoming a paramount trait for the pros too.

A bigger problem getting recruits at this position right now may be "Wood/ Riddick/ GAIII/ Neal/ Russell/ Mahone" plus the recent Kelly "subtle-shift" to the hybrid "you can't predict where I'm going to be" conception of the RB/Slot. Kelly, though, will be perfectly happy to creatively design the offense around an exceptional skill if such arrives [just as he has now done with 1). Eifert; and 2). the load of hybrid talent.]

My bottom line on the Kelly system, is that I believe that it does not need a 5* RB to make it formidable. It needs a dangerous runner who can utilize relatively open spaces, can pick up the blitz, and catch the ball. Right now that's Cierre Wood's MO. Theo and GAIII seem to be learning the blocking part, so that will be their MO. I'm going to assume that Russell, Neal, and Big Will will get the same three traits downpat, and we'll be loaded.

And let's not forget about Carlisle.

Funny how a position of SERIOUS need last year has become an embarrassment of riches. Wouldn't it be nice if something similar happened with CB.

I know common knowledge is that we are out of it for him, but if he visits does anybody think this means we have at least a shot? I have no reason to think this, just don't think we are totally out of it for Isaac...

Only in theory. In reality, no.

I'm not sure why everyone thinks we're completely out for Isaac. I understand he's visited SC but I don't see "USC verbal" next to his name. He's a fairly local kid and it's freaking May. Why would he even make a return trip to ND if he had no interest? I get that it's a short drive but still, you don't make it if you're not interested.

I don't think Keith made an unofficial to ND?? Keith only came for an official visit to see a great traditional rivalry game on NDs dime.

Ty is coming up on his own dime...

So what did this one say?

There were so many lost handles that that made the "O" look bad last year, Mike is right. The "O" Gashed otherwise. Floyd's stats with two runners on pace or achieving 1000 yards? Purdy good.

Manti Te'o - need I say more? Ronnie Stanley. Need I say more?

We could do this all day. There are guys like Marshall and Shaq Thompson and there are guys like Te'o and Troy Niklas. Everyone is different. If a guy says we're in his top 3 to other teams' reporters (which is always big, and Isaac always mentions us in his top 3) and is talking about visiting, then yes, there most definitely is a shot. Not a great shot at all IMO, but I'm not gonna throw a wet blanket over it and compare him to guys who never had real interest in us.

Everyone is different...

It doesn't look good at this time but you can't complain about being in his top 3. Not to mention the fact that it's only May and a kids mind can change 1,089 times before Signing Day. Look at Gunner, just hours before he was supposed to enroll at LSU ended up with us. Plus how we do on the field will impact this class just like it always does. How we play against USC and the fighting Denards will prove critical IMO. Don't crap the bed in those two games last year and our recruiting class looks very different.

Maybe, just maybe, the kid is legitimately torn about what to do. He probably likes all three of his "leaders," in UM, USC, and ND. He recognizes the good things in all of them.

Remember he's not a typical recruit. He's mentioned that he hates the recruiting process and that he might not take visits. So if he's taking another visit to ND, it's for a good reason. Not only is it on his own dime, but if it were an OV, he wouldn't do it just to do it.

My guess is that he's just trying to solidify his thoughts on the process. I wouldn't put us out of it once he gets back on campus. There's so many things in our favor - JC to ND pipeline, Catholic school, the great production of our RBs, our offensive philosophy of our RBs, our recent recruiting success, and the amount of talent Kelly puts into the NFL.

I like that Ty is taking his time and making the right decision. Sounds like a kid with a head on his shoulders.

+1, definitely. I doubt we get him but I won't write him off either. Hopefully we can convince him that he will be great in our offense -- which, after looking at his film, I think is 100% true. For a bigger guy Isaac has elite elusiveness. No reason he needs to limit himself to pro-style systems.

The fact that he is spending his time to show up means he is still interested. He didn't commit to USC like some people thought he might do during his visit. Too positive? Heh we'll see.

I wouldn't put too much stock in him mentioning us to other reporters. I think we can all agree this is a long shot at best. Comparing this to Manti is just...#reckless...Manti is the exception to the rule. For every one of him, there are a dozen kids who leave us playing the bridesmaid role. It is what it is. Until we win games consistently this is the way it's going to be more times than not. It's not a wet blanket, it's reality. I look forward to the day that changes, and I think it will sooner than later. Til then...

But if USC accepts Justin Davis commitment I could see Ty going to Michigan. To close to call.

I think Jordan Wilkins is visiting scUM early June as well. He'll probably stay in the south but I've read that some Michigan fans think they have a shot with him. They already have 2rbs, no way will they take 4.

I don't envision Wilkins committing anytime soon but I'm just sayin'.

And Davis is announcing the 17th, que no?

Cal, USC, Washington.

Hmm I wonder where he's going?

Anyone know if USC is only taking one? I read somewhere a while back about Davis saying he wouldn't be affected if Isaac committed, that they would be a good 1-2 punch or something like that.
