I'm glad he won it. Gives us a legitimate backup at both guard spots and center (Hoge) and tackle (Bivin). We could lose any one of our starting 5 and might not even skip a beat.

If Hoge started and either the center or LG goes down, who's in to replace? If Bivin started and tackle goes down, who plays tackle? I like this - quality depth across the OL.

Yep. Injuries really slowed his progress early in his career.

McGovern has had issues staying healthy since he arrived at ND, so I'm guessing that has kept him from competing for a starting spot.

We know BK loves him some upperclassmen, especially on the OL. Has BK ever benched a returning starter? I wouldn't be surprised if McGovern could have played as well or better than Elmer if healthy, but BK don't do that. That's the glass half full response to your Elmer QU anyway.

I think he has also had a few concussions.

Just a lot of minor to medium size injuries that have hampered him his whole career.

I think I remember there was a time he was considering retirement.

I remember hear Driskel and Lou on IRISH Hiddle say that he's suffered a lot of injuries at ND plus will be graduating and doesn't have NFL talent so they would be surprised if he didn't hang em up.
