Some grasp things a little slower than others.

Some linebackers are a little slower than others - can't grasp ball carriers, can't cover. Incoming 2015 class - Bilal, Coney, Barajas - agile, quick, and they can cover. If you want to play against Oregon, Texas A&M, Auburn, and Alabama, it's life in the fast lane. Stumbling thumpers need not apply.

I usually agree with c-the-d's views and mostly do with the above, BUT calling Michael a STUMBLING thumper is a bit off-base to my tastes. It's an unnecessary slur even when trying to make a point. Michael Deeb is no stumbling anything if Coach is going to play him on special teams, and I admire the guy too much to derogate his athleticism unduly.

Forgive the bluntness, but I tend to stick up for our guys unless they really sh!t the bed on something. Michael Deeb has plenty of chances to turn his tremendous work ethic into positive and athletic Notre Dame football [even if it's "just" on special teams.] Deeb lost out to Joe due to Joe's football savvy. He lost out to Nyles because of Nyles' five-star athleticism. He seems to be losing out to Greer because Greer seems to be Joe 2.0 with more speed. All that sounds like Michael has missed the field so far due to having some really good players in front of him, rather than being an athletic bust.

He's not backing up Morgan at ILB? Like there is no scenario in which he could get in the game at ILB? I guess I don't get that.

BK said Greer will back up Nyles. I was pretty surprised as well. Where art thou Deeb? Where art thou Randolph?

He might be a transfer candidate for those reasons you stated, plus the raw talent of the incoming freshman LB class. He is probably a good player, but needs a chance to start to show it. OTOH, he might value the ND education and decide to stay and take his chances that an injury gives him a chance to see the field.

This. I don't know why we always have to downgrade guys who don't immediately meet our expectations.

I don't understand all the high expectations you all have for a 3* red shirt freshman. A kid in his 3rd semester of college...who is a 3*.

Random question.

Do most of the FB players take a full load of summer courses?

If I am FB player in question and I can graduate in 3 years and maintain 2 years of eligibility to play elsewhere, I would view that as the best of both worlds.

Tommy would know better, but I believe this is the case with Coker at alabama-- he has 2 years left.

Any word on Deeb? His name was not on a recent roster handout and I was wondering if it was left off in error or if there is something going on no one has discussed.

Thanks guys. Figured it had to be a clerical error and he was still on the team. Reps to both of you.

Since BK started I've felt there's been no reason not to have a lb play as full back. There's no reason not to have a couple I formations with a guy like deeb who apparently won't see field as lb line up as FB.

You mean like when Carlo did that opening game 2011 I believe, that turned out real well.

I am having a hard time getting a handle on this discussion . . . .

Maybe it has to do with the fluid nature of the ND linebacker corps.

Two points of note, being that a guy with the work ethic of Michael Deeb and not much else would have been much further up the depth chart in days of yore :

  • Maybe VanGorder is crazy like a fox with his defensive philosophy, structure, and personnel packages.
  • Maybe Mike Elston isn't half bad a recruiting coordinator (to soon to tell), and maybe he is a coaching improvement, moving from the d-line to work with linebackers.

One can always hope.
