I think it was WiskeyJack that mentioned in BCS championship thread that this ND staff is trong at player developement. So so strong that years in the program seem to matter more the number of stars a guy has out of high school.
Max may get time but barring a ton of injuries I don't he will be a significant factor next season. This not to say he is not great but it is more of compliment to the coaching staff on good of job they do developing guys. He would have also had a better shot if he was an early enrollee.
This of course is assuming Max comes to ND we still have to wait and see for sure on that. Looks good but it is not over till its over.
I agree but he is a ball hawking free safety while Shumate is built like a line backer and much better in run support. I am almost certain Slaughter won't be back
Everybody had great points to make. Players are going to come here and stay to play for Bobby Elliott(and Kerry Cooks), just like we are seeing for Harry Heistand. GB I have to agree with your perspective.
So, now, tell me about the little blond.
I'm sorry man but no one can know anything either way on this, not even BK or Slaughter himself. It is in the hands of the NCAA, and they have been known to be wildly inconsistent and unpredictable when it comes to doling out 6th years. Just recently, Abromitis didn't get one when I thought he should have yet Dan Wenger got his at Florida with a much weaker case IMO.
Came in a holiday cup from Starbucks. Smokin' hot!
But seriously. I tend to agree with Wooly on Redfield's PT. I think he'll be hard pressed to start over Farley or Collinsworth. And I don't think we should undersell Barrati. The kid is a freak athlete and he had a great pick against Michigan in the endzone. Because of our sheer depth, I see him getting slightly less playing time than Shumate. That all hinges on our O's ability to blow teams out - obviously he gets more PT in that situation.
I hope he does redshirt because I want to watch Wooly eat his bathrobe.
Sorry to digress off topic but why did the heck to NCAA give Scott Martin a sixth year but not Tim Abromaitis in basketball. Abromaitis miss the whole season with injury last year. He should have gotten that sixth year. Sometimes I don't understand the NCAA.

Oy. I didn't mean to toss a grenade and disappear.
To explain my skepticism of Redfield's ability to quickly pass Collinsworth, Shumate or Farley on the depth chart:
- Collinsworth was slated to be a starter this season before his injury; he's earned Diaco's highest level of praise (lycanthropic); and he'll be the only senior in our secondary next season. With Motta graduating, someone has to provide veteran leadership, and Collinsworth is the most likely to provide it.
- Shumate was almost as highly touted as Redfield coming out of highschool, and he saw lots of playing time this season at the Nickel.
- Farley's athleticism and physicality are commonly underrated, and he's started at FS all season for arguably the best defense in the country.
That's a lot of talent and experience to overcome. Since our starting Nickel under Kelly has almost always been our #3 S, that means Redfield will have to surpass one of them. Of the three, he's most likely to pass either Collinsworth or Farley. Maybe Collinsworth doesn't have the athleticism to hang, or maybe Redfield ends up having better instincts and ball skills than Farley... it's possible. But I wouldn't bet on a freshman, even a 5, to pass either of those guys easily.
And the fact that I'm able to say that about two converted 3WRs is ridiculous. The player development we've seen under this staff is absurd.

In this report, Bleacher report seems to think Baratti will replace Motta. I really don't see that happening...not next year anyways

Eilar Hardy is going to be a name to watch next year. I have heard nothing but good things from his this year. Redfield has his work cut out for him. Kids arent just going to roll over bc he is a 5 star. Sure as a fanbase its nice to get, but he is not entitled to anything on this team. He will have to come in and work. THat is how dynastys get started.
Redfield may be a 5 star recruit but the others are no slouches when they compare to him. They are all athletically gifted with very high potential ceilings. If Redfield chooses ND (which I think 95% that he will) he will get PT, but like others have said, more along the lines of what Baratti or Shumate received this year.
