Man, I was so pumped when EV signed with us... Now all hell has broken loose.

By the way, I have been perusing this thread every 15 min or so since Steve's OP waiting for Whiskey's rebuttal. You sir did not disappoint.

Let this be a lesson to everyone, don't mess with Keenan Knights.

I'm perplexed by some comments here (too many to list but let me focus on this)

Would EV be able to play elsewhere as a true frosh if ND released him? Doesn't he have to sit a year regardless (not losing eligibility, getting 5 to play 4)? Some of the comments make it sounds like he loses one of the 4 not the inactive of the five.

This whole situation sucks, for the record.

At the current pace you are better off waiting to understand until after it all comes out. Pointless right now just join in the public bashing of Bruin Steve, who after being broken down by IE lawyers plus Wooly, I am now hoping is representing the Vanderdoes'.

I honestly don't think anyone totally understands how this works, but here are some things I can say with some confidence:

1) Yes, if ND releases EV from his NLOI, he can play wherever he wants immediately.

(Note that if EV ENROLLS at ND and TRANSFERS, rather than just refuses to report, he WILL have to serve an NCAA-mandated one year-in-residence at the new school before he can play. It's a separate penalty from the Basic Penalty for breaking an NLI, with a separate basis: the NCAA rules, not the NLI.)

2) By the terms of the NLI, the Basic Penalty for breaking an NLI is a) you lose a year of eligibility, and b) you must serve a year-in-residence before you play for another school.

So if EV breaks his NLI, he will definitely lose one of his four years of eligibility. I'm not certain whether he has to sit one year and then has three years to play three or four years to play three, but I've read the former in the news lately regarding Matthew Thomas and I believe that's the correct interpretation of the rule ... but again, not certain. In any case, this is UNLIKE transferring, where you can use a redshirt year for your year-in-residence if you haven't used it already (as Prestwood did when he transferred to ND) ... if you break an NLI you lose a year of eligibility as if you had played that year.

My understanding is the only way for an LOI signed player to play NEXT season was to go to the school they picked. Otherwise they have to be on campus elsewhere for Fall classes and then sit a year, just like any other transfer.

No biggie for a developmental player who is getting redshirted anyway but a guy like EV who looks to have significant playing time and low probability of needing the 5th year option it seems like a big negative.

Now does the "release" mean he could play next year or just a common courtesy making the "transfer" smoother? Or is the release necessary in order to go on scholarship elsewhere? Couldn't he go anywhere he wants on his own dime?

No, you are confusing the NLI rules with the transfer rules. The NLI just governs your first year on scholarship at the signing institution; there are separate NCAA rules governing transfers.

So a player like EV who refuses to attend the school he signed an LOI with has two options:

1) If, before the player enrolls, he requests his release from his LOI, the institution can grant the release, and it's as if the NLI was never signed. The player can start his career playing for another school in the coming fall.

2) If the school doesn't grant the release, the player can simply break his contract and attend another school. He does NOT need to attend the new school on his own dime; he can accept scholarship aid and practice with the team, but a) he cannot play, and b) he loses a year of eligibility, even though he didn't play.

Something happened that caused Eddie to want to change his mind. Why UCLA became "next man in" is understandable. But he picked ND over them for certain reasons. Why all of a sudden did things change AFTER he signed his LOI?

If EV had a change of heart, asked for a release, ND said no...and that's why they're upset? Then ok. And if so, now explain why his dad is making comments saying it's not because of a change of heart. He basically is alluding to the fact that ND screwed this up.

We all just want to know what happened.

Brandon Willis STARTED at UCLA, transferred to North Carolina and then transferred back...Sat out two years...Is far from your typical "transfer" story...He returned to No Carolina to be near a sick relative...things changed and he came back...

Yup...in the several years prior to Mora, we toook in two transfers--both from Notre Dame...Actually, you can go back decades and add Arnold Ale as well...also from Notre Dame...Local California kids keep going back there only to find out they don't really want to go to Notre Dame!

As to the JC players, you REALLY had to hunt...and pulled down about half a list's worth of guys who never got to UCLA! Johnson? Warner? White? Griffiths?

Actually White NEVER played at UCLA...he committed out of HIGH SCHOOL--yes, JW North is a high school, not a JC...but never made it here...

Shawn Johnson tried to commit...ended up at Montana State, IIRC...Only Shawn Johnson to ever compete for UCLA was a female gymnast...

Branden Warner, likewise, NEVER got to UCLA...Committed, then had transcript issues and was not accepted...

Griffiths? WALK-ON...Yeah, a kid shows up and wants to walk on, you don't care if he got there via JC...

You went back 6, no, actually at least 7, years and came up with the names of 5 actually recruited scholarship JC kids--less than one per year...

Ekbatani was actually a qualifier out of high school, attended JC for other reasons and was on the UCLA team for four years...You show Ekbatani as "'07", but, actually, he left that JC a couple of years earlier...he was on the '06, '07, '08 and '09 UCLA teams...

The four other actual scholarship UCLA JC players over the past decade or so (Cid, Cheachir, Craft and Bell), were emergency pick-ups who were needed to fill depleted ranks at QB and OL due to an unreal string of injuries...

Bell, originally a QB, was also a qualifier out of high school who spent only one year at a JC...Brother of former UCLA, now NFL, RB Kahlil Bell will also have spent four years as a Bruin...

UCLA is one of a select few NCAA schools that holds its recruits to standards much higher than NCAA minimums...Since most players in JCs are there due to academic issues, most will not pass UCLA standards for admission even after a stint in JC...

The ones you do see are generally "qualifiers" out of high school--they had the grades to get into UCLA and to be qualified by the NCAA--and went to JC for other reasons../Which is why they can transfer in after only a year--without completing a JC AA degree--and still be eligible under NCAA rules...
