I've read here that Arik (possibly Armond) will commit today. Does anyone know what means of communication he plans to use?

Most of them can play inside too don't forget- that's that much more PT for everyone! lol

Just look at the NYG about that. They are the best in the league with their DL roatation. Having a DE that can also line up at DT causes mismatch problems.

Reading the same things that Lax is hearing.

Still sounds like Cal but there is still a slight ray of hope.

One poster on another site(not putting much credibility into it, just throwing this out there) that Gus Armstead(their father) will have the final say. With the slight chance that is true, you would think that helps ND

IMO if Armond commits to ND, Arik will be Irish also.

I think Arik really likes ND but likes Cal slightly better do to the fact that it's closer to home and has a bunch of friends going there but the prospect of playing 1 year with his brother at a University that he really likes as well would tip him in ND favor.

But that's just the vibe I'm getting, not inside info or anything of that sort.

what are we gonna do if/when Armond signs with ND...DL will be LOADED!!! Lynch,Tuitt,KLM,Nix,Armond(just naming the top guys). we play a 3-4 so 2 of these guys will be sitting(rotation), right? GREAT PROBLEM TO HAVE!!

It's a problem that we need to have for next year. It's no secret that the schedule is real tough next year, and quality depth on the DL will go a long way toward success.

Does anyone know if this is the Dad's first time on ND's campus or if either parent came out with Arik for the USC game?

Arik Armstead heads home from Auburn to make decision; says he is enrolled at Cal, Notre Dame, Auburn
By Joe Davidson
jdavidson@sacbee.com

It's wheels up for Arik Armstead as he headed back today from his last recruiting trip, his mind full of possibilities.

Does he become a Cal Bear? An Auburn Tiger? An Oregon Duck? A Notre Dame Fighting Irish? The ministry instead?

Armstead, the All-American lineman from Pleasant Grove High School, visited Auburn over the weekend with brother Armond and father Guss. They checked out basketball practice - Armstead wants to play both sports in college - visited the football facilities and talked as a family about the academic structure, the chance to multi-task as an athlete.

Where to go?

Armstead's father said his team "will get home and pray on it" and make a decision by Monday morning. Armstead said he would ideally like to start attending classes as early as Tuesday. He said Sunday that he is enrolled at Cal, Notre Dame and Auburn, and that should provide all the proof needed on just how tight this three-school race is.

How can Armstead be enrolled into three schools at once? Enrolling before committing has become something of the norm for blue-chip recruits who graduate from high school at mid year. Keep in mind that nothing becomes binding until an athlete actually attends a class.

Ideally built to play offensive tackle at 6-foot-8 and 290 pounds, Armstead said he prefers to play on the defensive line, either tackle or end (much like Armond did at USC). Auburn offers a chance to compete in the muscle-bound Southeastern Conference, home of the last six BCS champions and eight total since its inception in 1998.

Notre Dame is unique for tradition and athletics. Cal has Armstead intrigued because of its academic standing, its new football stadium, the proximity to his Elk Grove roots and because scores of friends are headed there, including Grant star Shaq Thompson.

What's more, the Armstead brothers would like to play together. Armond was a two-year starter at USC before sitting out this past fall with a medical condition. He has medically been cleared and the family said he was never in any danger.

Arik gave a verbal commitment to USC following his sophomore season but opened his options in the fall and accepted recruiting trips to Alabama, Notre Dame, Oregon and Cal. It's ironic to note that USC coach Lane Kiffin is in the Sacramento region today to make a home visit to Whitney tight end Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick, a longtime pal of Armstead (they attended Jesuit as freshmen and played football and basketball there).

On Sunday night, Armond visited with Notre Dame football coaches. He also has a great deal of mutual interest with Auburn, though the brothers insist each will make their own decision independent of the other.

All told, Armstead is the most heavily recruited linemen in Sacramento-area history. Others of note from the lines include Gordon King of Bella Vista and Stanford, a first-round pick of the New York Giants in 1978, Reggie Rogers of Norte Del Rio and Washington and a first-round pick of the Detroit Lions in 1987, Jason Fisk of Davis and Stanford and a second-round pick in 1995 and Vei Moala of Grant from last season (now at Cal).

I'm just thinking if by some chance we do get Armond I would think it would be very important to keep KLM. I could see some senior's getting their feathers ruffled that BK brought in a USC guy that cost an ND 5th year his spot. Hope we can keep both, but the numbers are tight.

^ This crossed my mind as I read down through these posts; having a ton of fast, strong D-linemen that you can keep rotating through, even against a hurry up, is almost like having 7 good pitchers in baseball: it creates problems for the offense that are very difficult for even the best (in football, Brady '08 Super Bowl, Rodgers '12 playoffs) to overcome.......

KLM is as close to a 100% lock as you can get. He is a smart, hardworking, productive, 300 LB DE starter from Texas. The issue is whether they will bring back Sean. I don't think there is a "numbers" scenario that reaches these three.

I continue to look for a possible explanation on how Auburn could take Armstead given the Masoli rule in the SEC.

As several posters have previously alluded to, the only logical explanation is that Armond would/can transfer to Auburn, is for him to pay his own way and walk on to the football team. I'm assuming the thought process would be that if he thought that going to Auburn would up his draft prospects more then any other University, then incurring $20,000 in student loans would be well worth it financially.

According to some reports, the "Masoli" rule doesn't go into effect until October. That's how Armond could transfer into Auburn and be on scholarship.

Seems like a family that value education. If Arik truly wants to play both football and basketball one would think the academic support at ND would be even more valuable to him. I know he has a lot of friends heading to Cal but his he close to Tee and his cousin?

The Masoli rule went into effect in October of 2011. The last players that got in legitimately under the rule, enrolled in August of 2011. Do the research before you run around like whinebags.

I hope that wasn't directed at me. Several sources have reported that the rule doesn't go into effect until October 1, 2012. Here's one such article.

Post a link before you call people windbags. People have been confused because there have been conflicting reports from news services.

Whiskey,

No, actually it wasn't. I don't think I ever have seen you as a whinebag. In fact you are one of that group of few posters that make this site worthwhile!

The rule was passed last year and goes into effect this year. I don't know if someone starts this spring if there is an exception or not. The confusion lies around the fact that this is one of five rules passed trying to limit coaches from actually recruiting (acknowledged by SEC officials) the upward of 33 players in a class.

But under the new graduate student transfer rule -- which goes into effect for the 2012 season -- it wouldn't be allowed.

I don't know if Auburn is trying to push the envelope, but that is what it would be. There are multiple sources for this including The Commercial Appeal and other reputable news sources.

According to that article Arik was going to make his decision this morning. I am guessing that is west coast time frame, which is close to 9:30 AM at the moment. Just a couple more hours?!?!?
