well, no one can blame ND for not clearing him medically now. But it seems like the NCAA may have a problem on their hands for most of the top programs (maybe even ND) may use these painkillers. I doubt he have heard the last of this topic.

The Oregon 247 guy was on Bill King's show this morning and they discussed Armstead. He expressed some frustration of Armstead, saying he lost playing time the second half of the season because of lack of production and how he should be hitting the weight room so that he can beef up to 315 and become the defensive lineman that he is capable of instead of playing basketball.

Football Stats
2012 - 26 tackles
2013 - 15 tackles

Should see significantly more time next year as the entire defensive line graduates. That's good news and bad news. It will certainly help his development as a DL but means that it's unlikely that they shift him to OL where almost everyone believes he would be a better player.

Here is an excerpt of an ESPN article on the subject from the PAC-12 writer for ESPN.
Mailbag: Is De'Anthony Thomas of Oregon Ducks out of position? - ESPN

Armstead is a potential NFL All-Pro at left offensive tackle, based on his skill set, and a CFL player on the D-line, based on his performance as defensive end/tackle thus far. I personally think he is leaving millions of dollars on the table by playing defense. In fact, if he were my son, I would relentlessly hound him to make the switch. I might even touch base with the Oregon coaches on the matter to see what they think, though I'm not sure the guy who replaces the retiring Nick Aliotti will want to give up any more big bodies from his D-line, which will take some big hits heading into 2014 in any event.

Basketball
2012-2013 year - Redshirted
2013-2014 year - saw his first playing time of the year this past Sunday and scored 2 points.

As I looked at some prior posts in this thread I was also reminded of the reason he went to UW. He was going to go to Cal until Lupoi left for UW and so he followed him. Now Tosh is gone. Another reminder of why you shouldn't pick a school for a coach.

He goes to Oregon though. So Tosh leaving has no effect on him

Yea sorry buddy but your way off on that last part. He was a USC decommit who was looking at Cal, ND, UW, and Oregon. He ultimately chose Oregon and it had nothing to do with Tosh.

His older brother, Armond Armstead, (the USC one) is actually on the Pats practice squad and many people thought he'd be a big time player for them this year after dominating the CFL in 2012. He had a heart attack at USC which many believed was caused by a certain painkiller injection, so I think NE wanted to see him practice a whole year and stay healthy before having him on the 53-man roster. Either way, he's actually supposed to be in the d-line rotation next year and could be a starter depending on what they do at d-line in the offseason. Kind of an interesting story considering we were debating taking the older bro here for a 5th year.

He can focus on football as much as he wants, but as long as he refuses to move to offensive tackle, he is truly squandering his hidden, potential talent.

I'd spend a pick on him. He is as athletic as they come at DE. He may not have produced to his potential but he looks like a legit NFL player.

I don't know who thinks he'll go in the 1st round but I'd spend a third round pick on him as his upside is huge. Two sport athlete that has all the athleticism and just needs to continue to develop his game.

it feels like every high profile recruit ND missed out on in his class has declared for the draft already: Darby, Greenberry, Agholor etc

Reps, I was just thinking this.

Then imagine how awesome that team would've been if they all played on the same team.

and funnily enough ND's two highest ranked guys, Day and Stanley decided to stay :)

That was my point. The thing that is normally a disadvantage for the team is actually quite advantageous for keeping 5th year guys. Finishing up and getting your degree, or starting a graduate program, from ND is much more valuable than staying at Oregon. No offense to Oregon, but the values are just different.

Nothing...

Big guy, Ok technique to contact, draws some doubles, but does not have angry hands, and thus does not seem to shed blocks, does not have quick lateral movement, and appears to have no motor. He just did not make a difference in the games I saw him play. Can you get some of those things out of him...I guess so. I'd burn a 4th round pick on him.

I tried to watch him pretty closely in the Oregon games that i saw this year. Seems like he pops up vertical immediately after the first contact, then just kind of washes along the line hoping to clog a lane. He looks like he never got taught how to play with leverage (which for a guy his height is criminal) and just recognises that he was beaten to the point and uses his size to see out the play. Plays with no urgency.
I thought the same things about Seantrel Henderson and he turned out to be an ok pro. Maybe similar career arcs?

Yeah. He fatigues quick and then stands straight up. He needs to get in better shape. Dude this big with those feet should be playing OT.
