Not really.
And I think Everett does use the laces sometimes.
It depends how the ball comes into the hand.
Kellys big thing is you shouldn't have to move the ball around til the laces are in position. Just wants you to throw as is.

IIRC I thought they had a little tidbit last year on Everett's throwing mechanics and it showed him rotating the ball after the snap so his fingers weren't on the laces.

"I never throw with the laces if i don't have to," declared sophomore quarterback Everett Golson
He said he has been doing that since Rec league. In fact he said he prefers to hold the ball without the laces and will purposely turn it over to where he is gripping the ball without the laces. NOT kelly's thing necessarily but was brought up and he responded "Laces are for my 12-year-old son, not the scholarship quarterbacks at Notre Dame," - Brian Kelly

My own favorite part was when he put the ball on target thirty plus yards down field wearing the blindfold.

Good for him. I applaud his decision. Like everyone else here, very excited to have him back next year.

I have had a question I've been meaning to ask about the bolded portion because I have seen a couple posters write this. Since Everett was suspended from school and has to sit out the year doesn't that count as a year out of football and he could attend any school with no repercussions?

Or does a LOI bind you to a specific school for 4-5 years unless a transfer is requested? Even if you are kicked out of school.

Hmm, interesting question. I'm not an expert, but I recall looking at the transfer rules a while back, and the 1-year penalty for breaking an LOI and the 1-year period a player sits out when he transfers each has a separate basis. The first comes from the LOI itself (which I'm not sure has any bearing on anything after the student's first year of college); the second comes from NCAA rules. NCAA rules require a transferring athlete to serve a year-in-residence at his new school, the purpose being to help him get acclimated to his new environment. That rationale would seem to apply regardless of whether the player played any football the previous season. So, my guess is that Golson would still have to sit out a year if he were to decide he doesn't want to come back to ND next season and transfers elsewhere. But that's off the top of my head without looking at the rules again; could be wrong.

In theory the LOI binds a recruit to sign with that school for one year, unless he can find a sick grandmother, or his older brother bolts (see the Olsen brothers, when the soph QB Olsen became disenchanted with his future PT at ND he left at the end of preseason practice. The younger brother incoming freshman TE quit the next day, before classes began and transferred to Miami. Look before Vanderdoes LOI's were broken.) the LOI was only for the first year as NCAA scholarships are renewable annually.

As for the one year sitting out for transfer, that only applies to Div 1. An athlete transferring to a Div II or lower school apparently doesn't have to "acclimate to the new school" and can play immediately. I believe that rule was put in place to prevent athletes from hopping to the hot team of the year.

Had Golson tried to transfer last May, I suspect he would have been required to sit out the '13 season at another D-1 school. Were he to come back to ND in January and then transfer in May, the NCAA could treat that as a new situation or waive another lost season as he's already burned 3 of his 5 eligibility years. Keep in mind how liberal transfers have become in the past 2 or 3 years since Carlisle.

1. He certainly looks bigger and stronger.
2. Working with a QB coach will help him tremendously as evidenced by the blindfolded throw.
3. It's tore him up to watch what has happened this year and he will come back the better man for this.
4. He will be a handful for opponents.

The thought of Golson along with Cam, Folston, maybe Bryant, DD, Fuller,Robinson, C Brown...that just sounds sick. Oh and Hercules has another year right? Our offense should be pretty damn good next year i think

I think it'll be Daniels again, provided Daniels is healthy. I expect Niklas to get some receptions as well. Maybe Fuller steps out as a deep threat.

Given the players we'll lose from our defensive front seven and the difficulty of our schedule, it better be. Golson will need to play like a Heisman contender for us to sniff a 2014 playoff berth.

I think this is what we all as fans needed to see from him. This will bring a lot of excitement for sure. I think him manning up and accepting responsibility for his actions and his team made me even more of a fan of this university than I ever thought I could be. Very excited for next year but, still optimistic about the remainder of this year.

The kid has obviously put on some muscle but im in the opinion that i want him to stay light enough to scramble and not lose a step but heavy enough to take a hit or two.

I'm thrilled with the way Golson has handled himself since being removed from ND and look forward to his return. Wondering if he is going to catch heat from opposing crowds as there might be chants of "cheater" heard on game day. Hopefully not...he paid his dues but we all know what various fan bases are capable of.

Question: How is Golson paying for this? I doubt this is possible, but since he isn't an NCAA athlete, can someone pay for his training with Whitfield?

his family must have a few Florins tucked away. Probably took a loan out and will repay it when he gets his NFL signing bonus in a few years. Possibly too they take out insurance in case he gets hurt
