Yeah, this is what really bums me out about this whole thing. IIRC (and someone correct me if I'm wrong ... I did not follow recruiting very closely in 2011) DVD was academically borderline, it was unclear if he would get in, and the university ultimately took a risk and let him enroll. I just hate to see a borderline guy like that flame out. You want to see that type of guy appreciate that someone took a risk on him and make the most of the chance he was lucky to get.

My impression is that DD flamed out because of entitlement issues and a poor work ethic (which directly led to his academic suspension and ultimate dismissal). That moral failure is entirely his (and probably his father's as well), so it's hard to work up much sympathy for him.

Lynch was allegedly even more borderline than DD, but he had a 3.0 when he transferred out. If Kelly's recruiting you, chances are good that you've got what it takes to make it at ND. But it ain't easy, even for our brightest football players. If you're gonna loaf and cut corners, it's going to end in tears.

It's a shame that DD didn't take advantage of his opportunities.

...

C'mon, DD. Don't make an emotional decision. Come back, finish your degree, boost your draft stock, and leave ND the right way!

Even if he doesn't play... take as many courses as you can and get that degree...

I watched Daniels in HS and it was pretty common knowledge that he wasn't real bright even though he raised his grades to qualify. A lot of kids that knew him personally were shocked that he could get into ND. I don't know if it was lack of work ethic or just he couldn't keep up academically no matter what. It's easy to fall into the trap of cheating in college. Most kids don't get caught.

Agreed for the most part, though keep in mind Lynch had only taken two semesters of classes, which the athletic department does a pretty good job of, uhh, "carefully selecting" for first year students.

There are guys on the team who may or may not have the academic horsepower to compete in the classroom--I agree that Davaris probably could have, though I'm not entirely positive. There are other guys on the team that probably fall into the latter category.

Daniels said his suspension during the spring semester for poor grades should highlight that stance -- in other words, wouldn't cheating improve his grades and not hurt them? Daniels was off campus for the spring after failing to keep a 2.0 grade-point average. The school reinstated him in May.

To pass the time, Daniels and three other players are coaching a women's interhall flag football team. The PE Pyros are 2-0.

"We try to get our mind off the whole situation," said Daniels

To pass the time? Shouldn't his butt be in the library working hard to get his grades up? It's hard to have sympathy if he was coaching flag football in his "spare" time, especially if he's a student-athlete who plays football. Student-athletes barely have enough time to study enough and play their respective sports.

Do my ears deceive me? Are you actually insulting your son? Any comparison of him to the riff-raff around here!
