Where does Kirk get the idea that Jackson is our best cb? Does he get a script before the game? I think he covered or watched enough of ND this season to realize Jackson may not be one of our top 2 CB

I agree, but I wonder why we keep putting him against their top WR. I think Russell would fair better, but there's got to be a reason our staff likes that matchup.

;1192719]Did any Irish player regress more in 2013 than BJ?[/QUOTE]

Tuitt - Nix

I say this based on Jax benefiting more to our DL pressure last year rather than actual shutdown skills, whereas Nix-Tuitt were less dominant overall.. In essence, last years D built upJax therefore little to no change

Farley was terrible this year, but I don't remember him doing very much prior to this year, so I'm not sure if you can consider his play as "regressing."

Tuitt and Nix were both hurt / out of shape…but they both still made plays when they were in there. The entire DL play was not great and definitely contributed to the poor play by BJ, but Russell had the same DL and he was able to make a lot of plays.

Not that long ago, Bennett Jackson was being touted as an early draft pick. I remember that some thought he might declare after last year. He did next to nothing for the Irish this year. Made very few plays and got beat consistently just about each and every game. Don't get me started on his tackling.

He could be taken as a 5-6 rounder if he does well at the combine. Mostly likely an UDFA.

I think it really was a strong front 7 that helped mask our deficiencies in the secondary last season. People talked about how strong the secondary was, but aside from Russell and maybe Motta, I don't think the secondary was all that strong. Our front seven weakening helped outline Bennett's weaknesses and Farley's. Farley is still pretty young, he has room for improvement. Unfortunately for Bennett, his draft stock will hurt as he doesn't have any time to make up.

NFL Events: Combine Player Profiles - Bennett Jackson

Mayock usually has a hand in the player assessments.

ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS
Good height and hands (former WR). Tough and durable. Has special-teams experience. Team captain with leadership traits and solid football and personal character.

WEAKNESSES
Could stand to bulk up and get stronger. Technique needs work. Choppy transition. Allows too much separation too often. Weak jam. Leaky tackler. Ordinary production on the ball. Still developing positional instincts. Reactive instead of anticipatory.

BOTTOM LINE
Looks the part, but strength, technical and instinctual deficiences are too significant to overlook. Did not distinguish himself enough as a senior to be considered more than a developmental prospect.

His strengths aren't even football things. Leadership, toughness, special teams experience, all nice. However basically on-field skills outside of hands are entirely in the negative column. Nothing that we didn't see all last year though.

This kid was a burner frosh year on special teams, arguably the fastest guy on the team. Crazy what adding 15-20 lbs does.

I remember he opened up the Utah game in 2010 with a sweet kick return and he was always the first go down the field on kickoffs.

Good fit for Bennett. Close to home he can be comfortable and he will probably have some time to learn. Good Luck Bennett!!!

From the few articles I've read, it sounds like the Giants secondary is very crowded, and just making the team is no sure thing.

With that said, the Giants must be looking for something more from the secondary if they took Jackson and already have a crowded secondary. It's just up to Jackson to now go out and perform. Maybe special teams play will be the deciding factor.

The only way he makes the team is if they need him on special teams. Luckily for him he is a hard worker and a good special teams player.

Honestly, I don't see how he plays CB in the NFL. Could definitely see him making a roster as a safety though.

We have played a lot of zone with our corners, so I can see him maybe helping out in a zone scheme package or something like that. But if we go more towards man, he can't play. Special teams is where he would have to make the roster.

NY Giants Off the Clock: Sixth-Round Pick Cornerback Bennett Jackson, Notre Dame - Sports - AllMediaNY

The New York Giants entered the 2014 NFL Draft with seven picks and just as many needs: tight end, wide receiver, offensive line, defensive tackle, safety, defensive end and as always linebacker. As we take the Giants “Off the Clock”, we’ll break down all seven of their draft picks, continuing with their sixth-round choice:

Round 6; Pick 11 (187th Overall): CB Bennett Jackson, Notre Dame

Measurables: His 4.51 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine is down the list of cornerback prospects but in the range of first-round picks of Kyle Fuller (4.49) and Darqueze Dennard (4.51). Jackson’s three-cone time (7.65) was dead last among covermen, however he crushed it in the short shuttle with a 4.00 (tied for first). That drill is designed to replicate a DB’s ability to mirror wide receivers in and out of breaks. He also flashed explosiveness with a 38” vertical jump (ninth) and a 10’8” broad jump (tied for third). At Notre Dame’s pro day he picked up his straight-line speed with 4.41 and 4.42 40 times. Jackson has good length at 6’0” and average bulk (193 pounds).

Skill Set: A converted receiver, Jackson’s instincts and recognition skills have improved since he switched to defense as a sophomore. As expected, you can count ball skills among his strengths. The former Golden Domer tracks the ball well and has very good hands for a DB. He’s also not afraid to take on blockers and ball carriers in the run game. However, he will need to get bigger and stronger to do so at the NFL level. Added bulk will also help him battle the league’s bigger wide outs.

Value: The Notre Dame product could have easily gone sooner on Day 3, as some gave him a fourth-round grade, which is where I envisioned him going. I thought the G-Men did very well with this selection.

Need: The Giants added free agents Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Walter Thurmond and Zack Bowman, as well as re-signed Trumaine McBride to go with holdovers Prince Amukamara and Jayron Hosley so this was more of a value than a need pick.

Mogollon’s Pick: I’m sticking with Jackson. Why not? I’m a big believer in picking the best available player on the board. I’d rather draft a player who makes the team based on merit rather than default.

Who Did They Pass Up? Looking at the positions the Giants could have addressed with this pick—tight end, offensive line, linebacker, defensive end, safety—there really wasn’t much available which is probably why they went with value. Two seventh rounders that might have better addressed a need are former five-star recruit OT Seantrel Henderson (Miami) and former Baylor S Ahmad Brooks, or maybe even Missouri man Michael Sam, who could have given them a young DE to groom. The two most talented players on the board were probably RB Storm Johnson (UCF) and DT Dan McCullers (Tennessee).

The Fit: The book on Jackson is that he is more of a zone coverman who would struggle in a predominantly man-to-man scheme, which should be fine considering that’s what defensive coordinator Perry Fewell prefers.

2014 Outlook & Beyond: Factoring in how deep the Giants are at the position, Jackson may have to earn his way onto the team by his special teams play, which he’s more than capable of doing. Barring injury he won’t crack the top three, but it’s foreseeable that he could push guys like McBride, Hosley and Bowman for playing time. Even though he slipped to the sixth round, I’m not ready to write off Jackson as a potential starter down the line.

Nearly had a pick tonight, nice effort by Bjax on the play.

I nearly snagged a 10 tonight...and I gave it a really nice effort.

Instead though, I'm lying here next to a 2...typing with one hand...and gnawing my other hand off from under her neck.
