Jimmy kinda got scrooged in his landing spot with the Panthers.

Had he gone somewhere and actually been able to learn for a year or two, who knows?

always weird to me when you see Jimmy's height listed as 6'2"+ because when you see him play in the NFL he always looks tiny

I wish Jimmy well in his try-out with Detroit, but this says more about the sad state of the Lion's back-up quarterback situation than it does Jimmy's chances of being successful with the Lions.

he's likely just there to throw balls to the WR's working out I'd say aka the Brady Quinn role

I see Detroit signing Clausen as a backup. Wherever Clausen's next destination is he will not be a #1.

Detroit is perfect for Clausen if he gets the chance to hook up again with Golden Tate. I have not been a fan of Matthew Stafford as I think he is one of the most overrated QB's in the league. He hasn't done much for Detroit.

The difference between Stafford and Cutler besides age is that people just like Stafford. I honestly see pretty much the same quarterback between the two. Their styles are the same and they both are willing to put their body on the line.

So last night I was watching old Notre Dame highlights. For whatever reason I decided to rewatch all the 2009 highlights.

Something I noticed about Jimmy is that he would check down a lot to the backs. I know these were just highlights but every time he checked down the backs would easily get 5-10 yards at a time.

I just don't recall check downs to the backs too often these days. Not that the offense has any issues, just an observation I made.

Also, that 2009 team was stacked with talent. No idea how they only went 6-6 in the regular season. That team had Riddick, Rudolph, Hughes, Floyd, Tate, Blanton, Harrison Smith, Ian Williams, Te'o, and I'm sure a couple others I have forgot. But everyone one of those players are now in the NFL or played a few years in the NFL. Man what could have been.

I think a lot of it has to do with offensive identity. We ran a Pro Style offense under Weis, often utilizing a FB and constantly had a TE on the field. The FB could provide extra blocking, which allowed the RB to be a check down. In a Spread offense we have 3 or 4, (or even 5, but that's not relevant) WRs on the field at any given time, which forces the RB to pickup blitzes more often than they would in a Pro offense. It's probably one of the same reasons we've utilized the TE position less and less under Kelly. When the RB does go out into the flat for a pass, it often forces the TE to pickup a defender. I honestly haven't crunched the numbers to see how much more often we ask our RBs to block in Kelly's system over Weis', but I'm willing to bet that the loss of a FB on the field has a lot to do with it.

I was actually going to make full condensed replays of Jimmy Clausen's 2009 season instead of doing anything for this year, but I can't actually manage to find the games in any of the usual places.

Jimmy Clausen will likely always be my favorite player for his against-all-odds attempts to win, yet falling short just as much as he exceeded.

I think this is mainly due to the proliferation of single back, 4 WR sets. The backs are used much more, these days, for blitz pickup; or even as an extra blocker outside of blitz pickup.

The Chargers, Pats and Saints offenses all check down to the backs pretty regularly. Not sure if you meant in college or the NFL, but those teams certainly play that way.

Since everyone hear is convinced that players read these sites, I will offer this advice to Jimmy Clausen. I think that you may have found your niche as an analyst. You are not bad, but can improve. Stop dissing Brian Kelly on Twitter, call Troy Aikman/Mike Mayock to get some pointers and if you can follow that advice, you can replace Flutie. Of course, if that happens, keep learning, cause Flutie sucks at this, and you could be more if you are HUMBLE, in learning the TV part of the game!

I didn't even know he was supposed to be on. Therefore shocked with his comments on twitter, when looking back.

He's not a bad commentator from what I've seen today. Quinn either. Our QBs have more sucess in the booth than the NFL?!

Got a little repetitious, stuttered a few times at halftime there. Otherwise he could had some truthful points, he's just getting started.

I think Quinn has been very good in the limited sample of commentating I've seen him do. He seems confidant, calm, and collected. You can tell he has a good football IQ. Wish he was on NBC instead and would take Flutie's spot.

We run a lot of 0 or 1 back sets. And, usually, when we are in a 1 back set, that back is in there for blitz pickup. So there's rarely a back to check down to. The WR screen seems to have replaced the RB check down, in the spread offense.

Both had above average success in the NFL. The average career is like 3 seasons.
