Here is the issue with the tell conspiracy. Why does it not help the pass rush? Why do certain backs have success for one half at a time each week? The tells work in one half in Williams runs but not the other half? And then they work against Williams but not James the next game?

What I still see in the run game personally:

- Inconsistent OL performance with highest % coming from RG

- No firm identity between scheme and RBs style

- Poor vision from Williams. Lack of upside from James

- Teams still playing us to stop the run first. That is a thread that I may need to pull on more as to why. Maybe it’s a bit of roulette? Like hey we stop the run, protect against deep balls and passing can be more erratic in concept so maybe CJ misses a throw and we get off the field? But I would have to see what Purdue did closer

Well back then they were landing elite QB’s all the time. Then they had the gap between them and Brees. They haven’t been able to land one since Brees.

I think the AD’s have also contributed to the decline of the FB program. IIRC, Burke came from a steel company and was a penny pincher. It was known coaches would pay out of pocket to go recruiting because the recruiting budget was extremely small.

It’s smart to sell out against the run vs ND. Very talented but inexperienced OL and young RBs. Stick to it because that Gilbert TD was a thing of beauty set up by a LB crashing and unable to get depth in the cover 2. We’re not getting the chunk runs right now as much as we’d like but good things are happening. I think we all know Mike D is setting up some stuff on tape for later on against some tougher teams coming up.

I agree with the lack of upside from James, but you have to roll with him. I’ll take his 4-6 yard carries all day long.

That offense could do basically nothing all game. And that was with 2 of the top 3 safeties out.

Agree with this. All anyone needs to do is watch the MSU game. A tale of 2 different backs. James lifted the offense and ripped off 121 rushing yds averaging nearly 5 yards a carry. He has better vision, more suddenness, straight line acceleration, and patience. Love Aneyas but want to see him more as a 3rd down back to pass block (huge strength of his), short carries, and receiving. This change needs to be made.

Haven’t watched much of the Irish thus far but I’m not as concerned with their run game. The OL will continue to improve as the year progresses. Don’t have to be great, just good. It does seem to me at least that there’s something in their setup tipping the defense a bit. Not so much play calling tendencies but alignment, foot sets, lack of pulling the guard, or something. Too many times the second level of the defense is filling gaps too often. Figure it out and your average goes up a yard or two a carry. And that’s all you need to keep the defense a bit more honest.

Since I haven’t watched that much maybe not a good observation especially based on limited watch time.

The talent is very clear. He is a big safety and has great instincts. Secondary is just so loaded. Missed Talich yesterday but O'Brien is a great backup plan. Yes super depth.

Defense's really just don't care early on in games about anything other than stopping the run and we run right into the run blitz. I think Denbrock, probably by mandate from MFMF, just wants to get the running game going so bad that we are just going to pound into a wall until it topples over.

If establishing the run wasn't so important to this program, we'd probably have 250 yards passing by halftime each game off of play action.

I think a lot of people would agree with you in this. The one thing I don’t understand is why we do use this to our advantage and burn their asses in the air.

Browne threw the ball 28 times, and we had six sacks (maybe one or two was on the backup late?). So Purdue ran ~34 passing plays with their QB1, and he threw for 111 yards. He is a third-year starter and they are a team whose supposed strength is the passing game.

Enjoy this defense, guys. You don't get a defense like this very often.

Purdue's rushing defense is horrible and literally ranked near the bottom of D1 teams (138th nationally). Running game has to be fixed and improved to win a title. Starting James is step 1. Schedule will get tougher quite soon. I know CJ is a stud but balance is needed.

- because the opposing back seven isn't tipped off and crashing the los on pass plays.
- the offensive staff is making some halftime adjustments that change the scheme enough that it isn't getting blown up as consistently.

Your last two questions aren't as sound as they've both struggled plenty at the same time. Hell, if one was always playing well, there wouldn't be as much consternation.

Your other three points absolutely have merit, as do time and score. Some of the success may be attributed to getting blown out.

Yeah i’m gonna go out on a limb and say we see two guys leave from the RB room this offseason. Will be interesting to see how things play out because most have eligibility left and none of them are NFL good.
