When will we ever get a defense that can force pressure and cause turnovers?

Ya know, I try and avoid stupid, whiney posts like this.

I should assume you meant this in italics

Otherwise people see you whining about THE BLUE AND GOLD GAME...

Ya know, the last taste of football we have until September, remember that?

Also, if I'm not mistaken, didn't this "defense" (the gold team) win today?

I guess that guy is supposed to be a famous memorable person?

At age 71 my eyes work fine; I don't spend all my time in front of the television. Forgive this terrible lapse of hot-&-now modernity.

Haha, it's okay. I put Kelsey Grammer's (actor in Frasier and Cheers, not 'hot and now') face on a police officer. Hence the GrammEr Police. I suppose I can forgive the lapse.

Yeah, you should have assumed italics. The defense was great in the game.

Good:

GA III (Minus careless fumbles)
Riddick - love his flex role
C Wood - Nice running between the tackles, good shiftiness
Davaris Daniel's sideline catch
Eifert, Koyack's blocking, TE is safe
Ishaq
Louis Nix creating mayhem
DL is so solid.
OL looks great. Getting a lot of push in the trenches. Running holes were great for a spring game
LB - I don't think we are in a bad spot at any position in the LB corps.

Bad:

Upperclassmen QBs - What was that pass by Hendrix? Rees needs urgency and accuracy.
DBs are going to get pressed all year
Safety support looked weak
Goodman/Smith - need consistency and someone to emerge
TJ Jones - WTF?
Toma needed to get more involved
Hegarty needs more reps at C

Sorry for being late, didn't have time to address this yesterday

I was a little disappointed in Spond on a couple plays. He looked a step slow. Councell, on the other hand, looks fast.

I was very pleased with Cam McDaniel. He could be a player at CB. Josh Atkinson made some nice plays but looked shaky overall.

Always important not to read too much into the spring game though. Nate Montana looked GREAT two years ago.

Cam did very well considering he only started playing CB this spring. They picked on Josh a lot during the game, but that is good reps for him to take. He did okay. I think we might see Slaughter move to CB some during the season.

Another good thing that I think went unnotticed was Ben Turk had a couple great punts

True, my comment didn't really come out right. "Shaky" may have been harsh; he's not there yet but I see a lot of promise in Josh Atkinson.

I really liked Hendrix's play, besides the INT. I think he had 3 scoring drives, wether they scored or not.
He had the TD to big #80. The pass to Danny in the endzone where Mr. Smith was being held through the entire play and should have had pass interfernce called. Then when GA3 dropped the ball inside the 20.
Thats 3 times in the fewest amount of reps of all the QBs, that the O should have (if not did) scored.
The INT well honestly every time I watch it I keep see'ing GA3 just drop and sit down in the open hole (wich is probably the right route - honestly I don't know). Where I saw the pass go I think AH thought he was going to continue across the field. I just keep seeing that, but thats just me.

Another observation, not sure if you could hear it at home, but the first two times Hendrix and Golson were introduced when they changed qb's there was a loud applause, when Tommy was introduced not a peep.

Just rewatched the first half. There is a throw that Golson makes around the 4 minute mark that Rees simply cannot make. And then the next play is an option run to the outside that Rees simply can't do. That's the whole issue with Rees in a nut shell.... he simply cannot make X number of plays whereas the other guys can.

I also think Badger will be a player this year with all of the missed tackels by safties yesterday.

The pass he makes to Eifert at the 4:40 mark (assuming thats the one you're talking about) is smooth, strong and effortless. Although he did have Cam, a first year CB on him, the spot Golson threw that ball to made that play uncover-able for anyone.

I dont think anyone can fairly criticize Jones, Toma, or Goodman. They barely played and most of the passes were screens to Riddick

Punt Returns and Kick Returns were not allowed

Pros
The Rbs are solid and deep.
The Oline is much more improved.
The dline is pretty solid.
Golson is the qb I think Kelly covets.
Daniels has a lot of pontential
The secondary isnt as bad as advertise.
The defense is flying to the ball.
Ishaq has improved and has more confidence
Tight Ends are loaded.
Cons
Rees is done as the starter and hasnt improved.
Need receivers to step up.
Some concern with safety.
Need more depth in the secondary.
Cant start Rees.
Too many turnovers.

Overall pretty good performance. Kelly should let Golson take the reps and get him more comfortable.

Doubt Badger plays at all this year. He will most likely be redshirted having been away from the game for so long. Shumate and/or Prosise could make an impact though

QB Analysis in one word -
Rees: Consistent (i.e. exact same caliber of play as last year)
Hendrix: Decent
Golson: Solid

Caveat: This is only the spring game as many others have pointed out, so this means fairly little about what to expect come Ireland time.

By the way, did anybody else hear when they first went to the miked-up TR and he dropped the F-bomb in a clueless fashion when he didn't realize the play clock had run out?

I love ya OMM, but that was hilarious. Grammer was hot and now 3 decades ago.

Reese did it twice, Golson once.

It's hard to tell what we are going to get from Badger. The kid haven't seen a down of football in 2 years. There is potential there no doubt, and he should be a very mature young man coming in. There is just no telling on how fast he can get the game speed and the defense down. That is the main thing for him. Also, we are not sure how he is going to look physically. Lots of incertitude surrounding him.

I would rather play a 21 yo Frosh than a 18 Frosh. Safety position is not only about speed and range it is also about discipline/assignments.

I think another thing that goes unnotice is that the players seemed to be in good conditioning and look faster this year. Credit to Longo.
