Won the Starting QB job as a freshman. Four year Starter. Holds the record for longest pass play in ND history, 96 yds with Joe Howard.

Thanks for the memories, Blair, RIP.

Win one for the uncle, Gunner!

Prayers for the Kiel family. I lost my father at 48 to a heart attack.

May God rest his soul. I'm sure he'll have the best seat in the house come Saturday afternoons in the fall.

That is very sad news.

Kiel was a very good qb (4 year starter) and a good punter too. Very valuable and underrated player. He played during the Gerry Faust years when Gerry (a great hs coach) was in over his head. But I recently watched a great Kiel game where he led Notre Dame to an upset over #1 Pitt led by some guy named Marino.

I remember him fondly.

So very sad. 50 is far too young. Thoughts and prayers go out to the family. RIP Blair.

Why the Tribune felt it was necessary to throw in that last paragraph about his legal troubles is a mystery to me.

R.I.P. Blair. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Kiel family.

Agreed. Wouldn't expect anything different from them though.

Actually, the sentence provides the reader some context. When those things happened, it was a story. Keep in mind the Tribune's readers. You may have a lot of people familiar with Notre Dame football and maybe even remember Blair Kiel, but have no idea what happened after he left ND. That's the difference between the Chicago Tribune's readers and the South Bend Tribune's readers. Overall, this 14 paragraph obit (does anyone know if it made the printed edition?) is pretty glowing.

RIP Blair Kiel. And my prayers go out to the Kiel family.
