Sorry, I haven't really been keeping up as far as 2013 goes... what makes this kid such an x factor? Is it his speed, size, or is he just that much of a freak of nature? (Also what would he play for us?)

I would suggest watching his video and looking at his size/speed on the first page.

He would play OLB for us

speed isn't on the front page. I know it's an obvious question but my internet is on the fritz and it's easier to just refresh for some reason. I know it dirties the thread a little but I thought since it was a slow night... My bad though.

Definitely a Dog, BUT there were a couple of runs where he reminded me of Ricky Watters. Should be a top priority.

This is an LSU or Bama quality backer right here.

That's what I was thinking as well. Kelly has made it a priority to add speed and size at every step of the way, in every position. This year we need some of that at LB. To win, you need those type of freak LBs that you see dominate every year in the SEC. I just remember watching Alabama in the NC game this year and being in awe of their defense. I feel like ND is on it's way to something like that.

Steve Wiltfong was on Bill King's radio program this morning and said "I think ND may be the team to beat". Wiltfong also said "I like where the Irish stand". Obviously nothing very definitive, but it was encouraging that Wiltfong thinks that we may actually lead right now.

He said pOSU and Purdue were in the thick of it and he's excited about his recent offers from Alabama, USC, Oklahoma and FSU.

Found this recent video from what appears to be a Buckeye related reporter while looking at one of the pOSU boards. Reporter point blanks asks him about pOSU and whether his brother's playing time/depth chart slot will have an effect on him. He comes across as not being overly interested in pOSU but sometimes kids will intentionally hide/minimize their feelings about different schools to throw analysts off a little.

Impressive kid on all fronts.

I like the fact that the academics appear to be important but he was pretty excited about that Alabama offer.

IMO, we'll have to be playing for a BCS shot to contend for him.

Yeah, that'll work. Did y'all see that pick he had in the middle of that combine video?! His range is the size of an elephant! No doubt in my mind he will be used as an OLB. His defensive skills are too strong to be wasted on the offensive side of the ball.

Very impressed with his speaking ability. Not to say that athletes aren't well spoken by nature but not a lot of kids in high school handle interviews that well.

I grew up in the Fort Wayne area and I will say that most kids in that area don't handle interviews that well. Very well spoken.

Boy isn't that the truth, most kids an adults for that matter. ;) I went to school and played college baseball in Fort Wayne.

Well, many people have already said because he is a stud LB that Notre Dame greatly needs for this class. But I think an equally important reason is that he is from Indiana. Notre Dame needs to lock down the top Indiana players like Texas, Florida, FSU, and USC do in their respective states. Getting Gunner Kiel is a great first step along with Sheldon Day, but getting Jaylon Smith will only reinforce prep football players that Notre Dame is the place to go if you are a top-tier talent from Indiana. Lock-down the borders!

Jaylon Smith is my #1 wanted prospect for this class.

I think it is pretty clear that he is BK's #1 target as well.

That interview is impressive, the kid is very well spoken and fields questions calmly.

Also enjoyed the fact that ND was mentioned a few times

Hey all, I have been reading this forum for months but have waited until now for my first post so forgive me if I mess this up since I don't really know how it all works.

I was following the Rivals Midwest recruiting chat with Josh Helmholdt and someone asked about Jaylon Smith. He said at the Best of the Midwest combine there was a very strong pro-ND vibe from Jaylon and that he has a "strong affinity for the Irish."

The chat link is here: Rivals.com Football Recruiting - Live Midwest Recruiting Chat
