As far as I am concerned. He can play both ways.

I think that this will all depend on how some of the other WR's progress. If we have several guys that can produce, then he can play sparingly on both offense and defense, as well as return kicks. If he has to line up 30 times a game for routes though, I don't think we will see him on defense at all.

I think it would also depend on how we plan to attack a team offensively. If we are playing more jumbo sets with 2-TE's and running a lot against a team, then I think we could see him at corner in that situation.

So many options...

We would help the offense as long as he can grasp it easliy. We will need his speed when we play good corners.

Ideally, I think you'd want him doing one thing or the other. Concentrate on one thing and become excellent at it, rather than spread yourself around and become pretty good at a few things. Being a good player takes a ton of time watching film and practicing technique. He's a good enough of an athlete to be good on either side of the ball, but the athleticism can't make up for developing skills.

Wow! Just got back from class to find this thread. Glad to have Neal's commitment!

Here's to hoping he is the next Golden Tate.

Play him at cornerback, kick/punt returner. Also put him in the "leprechaun", slot, rb. Give him a small offensive play package just to utilize his speed. Kinda a decoy maybe? Have to wait and see how he progresses.

We need a WR. so bad. We need a game changer and we only have 1 on the whole team. the other might not be ready to play till next year. Kid needs to be on offense.

Exactly. He'll get major PT from day one. Explosive athlete that would be absolutely perfect for Kelly's offense.

How about this analogy:

St. John the Baptist is to Jesus as Marty Gilyard is to Davonte Neal

I think we have a greater need for his dynamic skills on defense, though. At the end of the day, they're going to use him in a way that gives him the best chance of excelling and helping the team win, so I'll be fine with it either way.

Agree. Word for word.

Shocker the recruiting insider was wrong....

What did I tell you? Don't panic and always wait and don't jump the gun.

Nice...

Just got home from work.

But I've been googling the **** out of "Davonte Neal."

I was a happy SOB.

Still am.

<--- wondering if this thread will reach 100 pages...

regarding Neal, I think it is clear Kelly is looking at him primarily for offense and ST. I dont think he will be used much on defense.

Can't believe the ND hate on the ESPN article comments about Davonte committing.

Great news!

Here's hoping he's our Mardy Gilyard: A dangerous slot receiver who can go the distance at any time, along with a punt and kickoff returner who instills fear in the hearts of Special Teams coaches.

Thank you, young man, and your family, for committing to Notre Dame: a decision that none of us, especially yourself, will ever regret. We can't wait to see you with the ball sailing towards the end zone.

And to IE: Almost as great a blessing for us as is Davonte's joining the University would be if all the IE negativists would shut up for at least a couple of months and give the rest of the site a break. "Give Peace A Chance".

And, oh yeh, Coach can't recruit great players. Duh.

What a strange trip this recruiting year has been. Some big gets, some individuals that left the train late in the trip, then some huge gets even later in the process. Despite having some wiggle room, in the end I think this seals up a lot of what we were looking for and offsets any pieces that were really lost. If anything we're stronger now than we previously were.

Apparantely there may have been some hate/drama spewing over at Buckeyeplanet after Davonte made his decision. Looks like their recruiting thread for Neal was cleaned up and closed.
