Michigan lands Ravens Mattison for DC

Brady Hoke seems like a really good hire. But if i was a Mich fan, I would be really concerned about how he said his main goal is to win a Big Ten championship...not a National championship. That's the wrong kinda thinking, at least to me.

Michigan was founded on that. Beat that school in ohio, win the Big Ten and go to the Rose Bowl. That's what Michigan's main goal was for 1997. They just steamrolled everyone defensively which got them to #1. Times are different now though. If we win 6 Big Ten titles in a row and no national titles...so be it.

I'm done being a sports brat and being like "We only won the conference championship...this was a failure of a season!!"

Times have changed for Michigan, I see.

From 1969-1996 that's how it was. A 245-82-8 record, 16 Big Ten championships, 9 Bowl wins and a 16-10-2 record against that school in ohio. I say 1973 is a national title because Michigan went 10-0-1 but they'll never claim it probably.

I think it deserves mentioning that Mattison didn't build that Ravens defense, and it is not as good now as it was before he got there. When he was at Michigan they won (shared) a NC the year after he left. Maybe he can take some credit for recruiting the foundation of that defense, but his departure clearly didn't kill them. This hire doesn't move the needle for me either way.

This is an ok move but they have to adjust from that dumb 3-3-5. I still think we will be fine. I don't know their roster enough to know if they have quality line backers to work in that system.

Both teams were undefeated at the end of the season and both had multiple selectors vote them #1. That, my incredibly intelligent friend is what we consider a SHARED TITLE.

is your point that it would be somehow a lesser title for either school??? If so I side with the skunkbear... nothing wrong with a pre BCS shared title in a sport with only 12 games and 120 plus teams...

Not saying it's a lesser title at all. I'm saying that it was shared and due to the system at the time there is no way to know who the best team in the country was that year. He thinks it was Michigan, I think it was Nebraska.....no way to know.

I say it was both... it's not like either didn't have a vaild claim... there are a lot of seasons where the champion was clear cut and yet some other clown team (usually bama... lol) came in and claimed some title they had no right to claim...

that was NOT one of those years.

I totally agree with what you're saying. The point I'm trying to make is that there was not ONE clear champion that year, and that's fine. My problem is his post where he quotes Eric M. saying "four trophies were given out and three are in Michigan, you do the math". Implying that Michigan was obviously the clear champion. All I was trying to say was that I think there wasn't ONE clear champ that year. Not taking anything away from the shared title though.

But lol I'm not taking away from nebraska's season, because they also were undefeated. I just hate it when people say "one shared title in 60 years". That just sounds to me like people are trying to take away from it more than trying state what happened.

Also funny you brought up Bama because I have relatives (watch it) who are huge Bama fans and live there. They have the banner with all the championship years and one of them is 1973. Now wait a second, didn't ND beat Bama in the bowl game that year and also claim the 1973 title? Hmm somethings not right here.

In 1973 ND went undefeated and un-tied as well as beating Bama 24-23 in the Sugar Bowl. It is a national title year. I have that banner in my room with all the games.

They didn't even know his name!

My earlier post showed the response of the hire of a handful of Michigan fans here in TN. Including my brother in law, none of them are liking this. Last night at a little get together, Kelly said it was like comparing apples to oranges, the schemes used at Baltimore are night and day to Michigan's and if Mattison is not able to realize that early, he says the LB core is going to hurt. Kelly also said that there was no coaching or guiding the LBs because Lewis pretty much had his style that he wanted mimicked around him and Mattison had no part in those roles.
