The speed, talent and athleticism that this class possesses is sick. The studs in this class are really impressive. Kiel, Neal, Shepard, Brown, Mahone, Day, Jones, Shumate, Prosise, Russell, Stanley, Baratti, and on and on. Great work by this staff, can't wait for it to translate on the field. If by chance Amir is cleared to play this year it just takes this class to another level. More speed that needs to be accounted for by opposing D Coordinators. Love it. Go Irish! Dublin here we come.

Spoke to Davonte Neal, who cited a family emergency this morning at 2:30 a.m. for altering announcement plans. Also apologetic delays.

“Deciding on a college is one of the toughest decisions a young player makes in his life, so we are very pleased with Davonte’s decision to attend Notre Dame,” Kelly said. “Davonte was an electric playmaker in high school and was capable of making the big play any time he had the ball in his hands. He excelled as a receiver, as a running back and as a returner for Coach (Charlie) Ragle at Chaparral High School. I imagine we’ll use him in a similar fashion here.”

Yep, and I think if Amir gets cleared to play this year then it becomes more likely that Neal will play defense.

lol, wish I'd seen Zbi's post before I posted. Sounds a lot like Kelly means for Neal to play offense -- which makes sense. He fits the profile better in our system(s).

Kid needs to be used like DeAnothy Thomas. He might not be as fast though cause DAT run in the rose bowl might be the fastest human being i have ever seen in pads. But still lets use him in that role.

I think we have a greater need for his dynamic skills on defense, though. At the end of the day, they're going to use him in a way that gives him the best chance of excelling and helping the team win, so I'll be fine with it either way.

We need a WR. so bad. We need a game changer and we only have 1 on the whole team. the other might not be ready to play till next year. Kid needs to be on offense.

Looks like defense is an afterthought here.

My GF just texted me how was work. I said stressful as hell, but it is ending well. (I was referring to Devonte Neal thread...I can't remember anything I did that was work related today. )

I like that strategy though. Primarily offense, help out on defense if necessary. If all five of our true corners look great in the spring and summer (wishful thinking, I know) we probably don't need Davonte to play D as long as we get a couple stud CBs in the 2013 class.

I agree. He can and is more than capable to do so. ISD tweeted a few comments from Neal that made it appear that he had spoken to the staff and they want him mostly on offense and ST. I agree with you though that I have no problem with him playing both ways sometimes.

Yup. As much as it would be awesome, I'm not a huge fan of kids playing both ways all the time in higher level sports. They need time to recover and in the long run, will perform better if they focus on say WR and ST.

I think there is almost zero chance he plays defense. As GB said we have a dire need at wr. Our special teams will be very special the next 4 years.

If all pans out for Neal I do see him getting in on some nickel/dime packages if we still have a need at db.

Great day for the Irish!!! Gonna enjoy some Ardbeg and Trinidad Reyes tonight...
