We're complaining about one or two 4/5-star guys slipping out of our grasp even though we still have a very solid class. Just check out the link to remember how bad it was...

The funny thing is that if you add Prestwood and Carlisle's points from last year to this class we're damn close to #1. So when you consider the overall haul... it's incredible.

THIS. And we're looking at another top 1-2 class this year. After back to back 8-5 seasons.

It has been nothing but crisis it seems for Kelly since he got here. His ferocious tenacity is unbelievable! I am one that has never doubted him and can't wait to see him reap what he has sown

A lot of transfers and a few that left the team from an already small and weak class. And people wonder why 2007, the senior year of this class, was such a disastrous season.

Badger signed in 2010 and will be joining the team in 2012. There's not really an argument for adding him to the 2011 class with Prestwood and Carlisle.

ESPN, for one, actually has added Prestwood and his points to our 2011 class. I thought you were suggesting they should do the same with Badger.

...well, and like you said, we have a long snapper in the mix.

BTW, that long snapper is pretty decorated in terms of long snapping competitions etc...is there a better one to be Had? its surprising these guys...being so crucial...don't get their own category.

Special teams players skew the rankings unjustly. Considering special teams are about 20% of everything that happens on the field it doesn't seem right that they can't be given more than 2*. Cowart, Turk & Tausch were in a cycle that should have been ranked higher.

agreed...just think there is enough criteria for most things like long snapper to put them in their own category, and then our long snapper would be a 4 or 5 star. I know all teams have this issue...well those that actually recruit to their scholly limits do anyway...

I'm sure Daly's a fine long-snapper. But how the hell do you define "the best long snapper in the country" anyway? Plenty of snappers come in as o-linemen or whatever, and do fine.

As for special teams specialists and their effect on rankings, everyone recruits kickers and punters and even the occasional long snapper. In the end it's a wash.

Also, I'm don't think I'd consider a five-star long snapper nearly as valuable as a five-star running back or linebacker. A good running back just contributes more. Differential from the mean, and whatnot. It's like in fantasy football; you don't draft kickers until the last round, because they all score about the same and their performance on a weekly basis is pretty random. Same goes for how you count recruits. Valuing a real playmaker the same as a guy who's job is basically defined as "don't screw up," isn't really fair to the playmakers. I'm OK with counting the snapper as less.

I guess what I'm saying is, I'm glad we've recruited "the best long snapper in the country," but I'm more excited about Greenberry and Shepard and Kiel. And I think we ought to measure our class based on those guys instead of complaining that our long snapper is statistically underappreciated. We're top ten either way.

...no real argument...I know all teams deal with this...but it is something that skews the numbers for a given year, and less so for those who oversign/overrecruit. Not that any of this matters all that much...

I'll take the drop in average star rating for the rock star special teamers any day. Our special teams have been lacking. I do think our kicking and return skillllzzzz are improving year over year. Was really hoping to have Darby as a return guy, but I think we have several that can add some lightning. I guess tired of kick/punt catchers.

Surprise or no surprise, we've got a pretty darn good recruiting class coming in next Fall. We needed offensive skill players, and we got two quality running backs (three with the transfer of Amir). We got three quality wide receivers. We got one of the top-ranked quarterbacks in the country. We've got some quality linemen (the Prestwood transfer helps here). We've loaded up on defensive backs, some of whom are way under-rated (Shumate, Tee, Baratti, Procise, and Turner). Eifert and Teo are returning.

Our coaches worked hard to get these commits and they will be working right up to Letter of Intent Day. Anybody who read the article on Kelly's recent visit to the home of Jarron Jones should realize that this staff makes sure its recruits know they are wanted at Notre Dame. Jarron's mother informed Kelly that the visit wasn't necessary and that Jarron was solid to Notre Dame, but Kelly visited anyway. He stayed long enough to visit with Jarron's grandfather and to visit the local Boys and Girls Club.

This community will remember Kelly's visit far beyond this season. Does our class ranking really matter? We have a great class coming in, and I don't particularly care where the powers-to-be have them ranked.

Keep up the positive energy! Love the stuff about the Jones visit. Its also probably telling that if Kelly went even when the visit wasn't necessary, that this class is probably done. That's fine with me though because as EddyToNow pointed out, we have some awesome Notre Dame men that will be signing on Wed.
