Make no mistake. We NEED Arik. You can't miss on a guy and say "oh we'll get someone next year." It doesn't work like that. We need to recruit elite D linemen every year to become an elite program.

Sheldon Day and Jarron Jones were up for 5 :s: consideration. That's pretty good depth.

You are correct. However, when I look at what Bama, LSU, UF (under that POS that's now in Columbus) have done the last few years, the D-line not only has to have great depth each year, the quality of that depth has to to be there year in and year out. We need Arik to allow us the opportunity to redshirt the guys that need the year instead of having them come in and play. Arik is one of those guys, like Tuitt and Lynch, that can play from year one. IMO, you need that mix of guys that need a year and guys that can play right away.

Wisco and Hawaii have been in contact with Armond.

Oregon continues to get mentioned as a real player for Arik now.

Ok, so I don't have the time to go and look back through past pages.

Heres my question:
Was Armond not cleared by ND to play and does this mean he can't transfer to ND for next year if Arik choosed ND on NSD

Arik will not make or break this class.

Just going to show you the depth chart for the DL (Eligibility):

Day (4)
Jones (4)
Springmann (4)
Chase Hounsell (3)
Aaron Lynch (3)
Stephon Tuitt (3)
Louis Nix (3)
Kona Schwenke (2)
Tyler Stockton (2) (Yikes)
KLM (1)

OLB/DE:
Ishaq Williams (3)
Troy Niklas (3)
Romeo Okwara (4)

We are pretty solid. Best I've seen at ND in a very long time.

It would be nice to see something out of Stockton. Consensus top 15 DL with ESPN ranking him top 3.

He is a HUGE luxury on an already amazing DL. Just because you are super excited about him (I am too) doesnt make him a necessity. With limited scholarships, if I had the choice of getting Poole and Darby instead of the Armsteads, i would take Poole and Darby... However, if the Armsteads commit to ND, i will be ecstatic and the DL will be stacked, but we do not NEED another DL, and dont bring up OL because Arik has stated that he doesnt want to play OL. We NEED DBs, and we NEED LB, we WANT Armsteads and great depth at the DL position. Dont confuse yourself or change things up to fit your argument.

Would say our DL (our starting rotation 2 deep DE/NT/DE) is SEC caliber heading into 2012. The rest of the defense is not even close at this point with the exception of Teo. Lot's of upside if guys pan out.

Keep in mind that Jones may be converted to OL. Especially if Arik signs.

Sec caliber? You mean LSU, ALA, and Flo caliber.

ND line compares favorably to the rest of the "mighty" SEC D Lines

First of all, we have MORE talent in our DL depth than the lower half of the SEC (ie Vandy, Tenn, Ole Miss, etc), so I will assume the "SEC Caliber" reference is talking about the upper echelon of the SEC? So to illustrate, lets look at LSU:

According to LSUsports.net, LSU has 15 defensive lineman on their roster. They have one more committed in this year's class (which is ranked behind ND's class on every site, btw).

ND has 11 defensive lineman (only counting Ishaq and Niklas, which some of the other OLB probably should be counted, but I digress) with AT LEAST 3 more guys in this class.

I am too busy to check the average star rating, but as TT's post above illustrates, ours is quite high when you consider guys that aren't even playing (ie Stockton) were some of the best recruits in their respective classes. Ishaq, Lynch, Tuitt and Niklas were all top 20 defensive lineman, with the first three being top 10.

You wont get any disagreement from me that our D doesn't play like an SEC defense yet, but to say that we don't have a similar stable, I would highly disagree. At least according to recruiting rankings, our stable is filled with able horses. Just as much, if not more so, than most of the SEC.

True, and the depth issue is a legitimate one, but look at how the staff had responded to Schutt and the Armsteads. With Schutt, an all-American nearly five-star guy in his own right the coaching staff turned him down as he tried to commit. Literally. Of course, you knew that.

But with the Armsteads, the coaches are absolutely drooling over him and doing everything in their power to get him to be Irish. That says a lot, in my opinion.

I def agree with you. One thing that gives Arik an edge is that he can play multiple positions on defense, most likely would play DE at ND, but he could also be an all-american at OT.

He wants to go to ND....he just wants to make us all crazy.

Write it down, and it will happen.

With those numbers it sure seems like the coaching staff should ,atleast, consider playing more 4-3 sets. I believe they feel comfortable having Tuitt plat DT. Depending on the situation we should be able to shift between the 3-4 and 4-3 fairly easily!!! This should, also, keep a rotation of fresh bodies the entire game!!

We showed an even front on roughly 50% of downs, and there was heavy rotation on the DL to keep everyone fresh. The staff isn't letting talent go to the waste on the benches out of stubborn devotion to a particular defensive alignment.

* Cal (Bears have been on him since his freshman season, with football coach Jeff Tedford and basketball boss Mike Montgomery coming for home visits with more to come)
* USC (yes, the Trojans are indeed back in play, with Lane Kiffin coming for a home visit soon)
* Alabama (Tide coach Nick Saban has spoken to Armstead and wants to come for a home visit)
* Washington (practically the entire defensive staff was in for a visit Thursday, including former Cal assistant Tosh Lupoi)
* Notre Dame (Irish coaches have been regulars on campus - in class, even - and for home visits, with more to come)
* UCLA (many talks with coaches Jim Mora, Angus McClure in football and Ben Howland of basketball)
* Oregon (coach Chip Kelley wants to visit again)
* Auburn (Tigers have made a number of visits to Elk Grove and will again next week)
* Hawaii (staff stopped by home on Thursday and program also really wants brother Armond)

I thought the problem was that things were too hectic. So the solution is to make things even more hectic?

Our only, and I mean ONLY saving grace would be that eligibility rule about transfers to the SEC that was discussed before
Seems like a long shot anyway
