Great to pull a top linemen out of the southwest...he will be a rock on the oline for years to come..Fax is in
Just saw in today's post practice that Kelly said Matt will be playing inside.
So, guard or center.
I find this pretty surprising, but I'm sure Kelly/Warnier know whats best. I just thought Matt seemed like a prototypical tackle.
What are your thoughts?
Three other offensive linemen in the freshman class are all currently redshirting by choice, and Kelly said Thursday all three - Nick Martin, Conor Hanratty and Matthew Hegarty - are likely to end up as centers or guards.
Today's Eric Hansen, SBT article on Prestwood notes:
I haven't read who played where on the scout teams this season.
If the plan for Hegarty, NMartin, and Hanratty is truly to go to the interior, then that tells me that:
A). one of them is likely the starting right guard next year;
B). Lombard is likely the starting right tackle, unless unseated by Nichols or Prestwood.
C). Warriner sees Lombard as a better tackle than guard, and Prestwood, Nichols, Decker as firmly tackle-types.
D). Maybe added hint that Golic will not be back [Cave + Hegarty + etc to hold down the center position].
E). With three tremendous starters returning, and one back-up that they are happy with, and several blue-chip quality youngsters waiting their turn for the final guard position, ND O-Line should ROCK'EM again next season.
P.S., irrelevantly: the expression "Big Uglies" is due I believe to Keith Jackson, probably the best thing that he added to football during his announcing career, and everyone including Corso uses it.
I've heard that this move has nothing to do with Matt's inability to play OT, and everything to do with his toughness. We have trouble finding guys who are big enough, athletic enough, and tough enough to be ideal inside linemen in our scheme. The staff was surprised to find out how much Matt likes to get after people (he is so under control in his videos), and they want that in the center of the line.
Personally, I think it is a great move, for ND and Heggarty. We are in good shape with a beast like him snapping, and he could be a particularly athletic C going into the draft. But it does explain why we are looking for at least one big-time OT this cycle.
Brad should play OG. I think he played against UMD, unless there is a walk-on with his number.

Didn't hear his name today. Seems to be the 4th option at best at tackle. Kelly said nick matin then Stanley.
He's the #2 center. Has been there all summer to my knowledge.
Kelly said Golic is the 2nd center.
I stand corrected then. I thought Mike was moving to guard, because Kelly wanted him on the field with Braxton in.
I'll assume that Matt would be third string center then?
Golic is the starting guard. Just if Braxston goes down he will move over.
Makes sense with Golic's experience I suppose. Matt would be what, potential first string center next season then?
