He tweeted it's just a sprain. Good for him.

Unfortunately....it's actually better to have a broken ankle then a sprain.
Broken ankles heal faster than sprains.
When I was a junior in college back in '06 I was playing a pickup game in the game and a guy crossed me over bigtime and I had a 3rd degree sprain, which is the worst you can have(it literally looked like their was a softball under my skin...not fun)..it took almost 6 weeks to fully heal.

If I ever got juked out that bad I would never play football again. You probably got made fun of for that one.

I know there are exceptions such as your example of where a sprain is worse than a break, but that's not very often.

The tweet said "just a sprain". I can't say that I think it'd be better if it were a break.

Well it was basketball actually.lol.But no,I havn't played since then...never once was made fun of over it...just don't trust playing again...i've had several broken bones, and nothing hurt nearly as bad as that ankle sprain.

There's 3 grades to sprains.Even the lowest,level1, usually takes a little longer than a break to heal...this coming from my doctor when I had the injury. I also have a friend who just earned his Doctorate in Physical Therapy and he explained the same thing to me.

Yeah I bet. I was playing basketball and when I came down from my shot I landed on someones foot. It hurt, but not as bad as my broken leg

Well I'm not a doctor so your friend is probably right. With the way it sounded though, I wouldn't be surprised if he was back playing next week and I can't imagine he'd be playing if it were a break.

I would rather break it.

I broke my ankle 3 days before our first baseball game playing basketball in the gym(didn't get crossed over, just came down from a rebound wrong).

Iced the **** out of it and taped it up. Never missed a game.

Sprained my ankle playing softball and couldn't play for a month even with the ice and tape.

This is correct. Had the worst one and ended up not 100% for about a year and a half. Two surgeries. This was a severe case of a high ankle sprain but these can be really bad.

There are a lot of variables that could come into play and Will's tweet just doesn't give us enough information to make an educated guess as to the extent of the injury.

When he said it was "just a sprain" that may be an actual diagnosis or he may be saying it on his own and there may be no significant ligament damage. If it is a Grade I sprain he could actually play through the pain without putting undue risk on the ankle, it's just going to hurt like hell.

I've sprained my left ankle on two occasions and both times it was while playing basketball. Each time I pulled up for a jump shot and got bumped just enough by the defender that I came down and rolled over on the ankle. I didn't go to the hospital or anything and simply iced it for 20 minutes three to four times a day over the course of a week. The next day I honestly couldn't walk or put any weight on it but about a week afterwards I was back on the court. I'm assuming they were both Grade I sprains but I should have gotten checked out.

Sprained ankles are the worst thing ever. Try playing Lax or basketball or any sport on one its the worst pain. So uncomfortable get better William.

This is not me dogging on Will just a bit of a personal note.

In all my years playing sports, I've rolled, twisted, and sprained my ankles plenty of times. For some reason though, I could and still can easily tolerate any pain it causes. I just run it off.

I don't think I've ever had a high ankle sprain though.

High ankle sprains are serious business. If it is mild enough he could be back this week. If severe enough he could be out for the year.

In other news, he tweeted a picture of himself and Jerome Bettis.

I was a world class ankle sprainer due to a certain basketball drive move [sort of violent as it involved jumping through the defender. Some would say that this was justice but I was biased towards the points.]. Some sprains were walk-offs and some were barf-offs. Some were next-day-sore and some were all-week-limp.

Also, not everyone's the same when it comes to pain threshold. I was associated with WMUs girls BBall team for years and we had an absolutely great point guard who was the best at her craft of anyone in the MAC, an a tough-as-nails tomboy [quite gorgeous too by the way]. When she'd sprain an ankle or some such thing, she genuinely cried. No faking. But that little tiger would let the burst of debilitating pain subside a little, grit her teeth and be back at you if physically possible.

Some folks don't understand the difference in pain thresholds others have. The only way to tell the difference between a wuss and a warrior is to watch NOT the immediate response but the rapidity of their warrior will taking over when they can.

I had two sprains in my life which each kept me on crutches for 6+ weeks. With one I had to have PT every day for a couple of weeks and then 3 times a week for a month. They can be pretty bad depending on the type.

I could be wrong, but I believe he said that because of how fast one of the ND recruiting sites retweeted his statement about updating his status on Friday.

yeah, that's pretty much what I thought as well.
