While being a long snapper, Scott might not make Irish legend, but I think he'll be phenomenal at his job. And while overlooked by some it won't be by me especially when we have the best special teams unit in the country large part in due to this young man.

I hate that the recruiting services give no stars for specialists.

Landing the top Punter, Kicker, or Long Snapper in a class is a serious recruiting coup, because they can have an inordinate amount of influence on the outcome of games.

Guys like Brindza and Daly ought to at least be 3-stars.

Brindza got a 79 on ESPN and was right smack dab in the middle of last year's class in terms of "value added"

Per Sapp at BGI:

BlueandGold.com received the following message from Irish long snapper commit Scott Daly via text:

"Just finished up with ND's kicking camp. Did extremely well and Coach Elston clocked me at .63 for long snaps!"

No other participants at the one-day event came close to Daly's time. It tied his personal best.

"I've snapped .63 during Chris Rubio's Vegas camp in May," he said. I'm just working to become as consistent as possible and lower that time as much as I can."

My only question is whether or not snapping it with that much velocity makes it too hard for the punter to handle. Thoughts?

Little to no influence on the punter's ability to control the snap. It's all about reps. If Brindza takes snaps from Daly long enough, he will get accustomed to the velocity rather quickly. Shouldn't be an issue.

Who will be holding for us in 2011... Goodman? I vaguely recall reading something about Hendrix getting some reps as the Holder.

It might break his hands at first, but he'll get use to it.

Imagine getting a fully ride to the University of Notre Dame for being able to long snap. Only in America...

It takes a lot of skill to be a good long snapper as you can tell with how often Daly practices.

Irish Illustrated has an interview with Daly released today.

No worries about this young man being all Irish. He is going to try to get to every home game and the Michigan and Maryland games also.

He was also upgraded from a rating of 45 at ESPN to a two star/73 rating. Not that it matters but hey, it happened.

Will make a difference when ESPN ranks our recruiting class. Not that that matters either. Just sayin'...

Was anyone losing sleep over that?

Probably not but it is fun to see this young man's dreams coming true.

Yeah well, after this Bruce Feldman fiasco, he was suspended/he wasn't suspended, The Decision etc., not much ESPN can do right. Although, I do enjoy the called games of Brad Nessler and Todd Blackledge.

This kid needs to have 2* next to his name on the main page.

Even though 2*'s completely undermines the importance of a guy who doesn't make errant snaps on field goals and punts. Those snaps can make or break a game.

I don't know about everybody else but I zero problem with Kelly giving out a scholarship to solidify our long snapping for the next several years.

I think specialists should be rated on their own scale, measured against other specialist. If a guy is the best in his position in the country, he should not be a :s::s: player.

I agree with this, but I wonder, what would the difference be between a 2 star LS and a 5 star LS?

the chatter about stars for specialists only relates to how it lowers your general team ratings in the "who had the best recruiting year" bullsh!t.
