mgriff nailed it.

This isn't that big of a loss.

Sure we would have been LOADED at QB for a good while, but think about Starling's thought process here.

First he's a quarterback who just picked Nebraska over ND with Brian Kelly. That signals to me that he either:

A.) Wants to play ASAP
B.) Football isn't important.

If he had come to ND, he wouldn't be starting for two, maybe even three years. I'm guessing he'll see the field much quicker in Lincoln.

Baseball looks to be more important to him. Going to Nebraska allows him to stay closer to home and not have to buy into the whole ND experience, when he might be gone right away or in a year or two.

We're probably better off not bringing him in. He'd probably only get our hopes, only to see very little playing time inside ND Stadium.

...

We're sounding like a Michigan board. All we need is their usual "we dodged a bullet" whenever a recruit they thought was a lock chose elsewhere.

I too was concerned about MLB and him leaving before he got on campus but Kelly and Company thought Starling was worth that risk.

He is a big loss, no matter how you chose to spin it.

LOL

Another classic is the USC "scared of competition" tag they put on any recruit(Clausen,Teo,Burfict)who goes elsewhere.

He is a big loss, but I think he is a big loss to college football, because he looks like he is going the baseball route. This is my opinion, I'm not trying to validate his loss in any way. It would have been great to have him, but I think in the end he isn't going to be playing football professionally. I think he will be drafted in the next few years, before he reaches that junior or senior season and breaks out in football. He might decide to stay at Nebraska for 4 years and win a National Championship, but right now, to me, it looks like football is second. That is why I don't really care that he committed to Nebraska.

It would be a big loss if it was 2001 and we didn't have Crist and Hendrix long-term.

I wish Bubba the best of luck on whatever he decides to do. It's not like he verbaled to ND and changed his pledge. I would loved to have had him in the Blue and Gold, but in the end, he made a choice I am sure he thought was the best for him, and we should move on..... ( Cue Boyz II Men "End of the Road") Begin Bubba Starling Montage.....roll credits.... wipe tear from eye.... Call next QB recruit.... rinse and repeat as needed.

Good luck to the kid, he made his decision, it cracks me up that two weeks ago this kid was a god that only needed BK's offense to ascend to the heavens and now that he committed elsewhere he has been stricken w/ polio....Some of you guys are hilarious.

Some of us! Did you ever stop to think that maybe some of us weren't really on the Starling bandwagon.

That's why I said "some of you guys", implying that not every one of you WAS in love with him.

I was on the Bubba Bandwagon...but since his verbal to Nebraska i've been thinking clearly.
This kid is clearly not going to be entirely devoted to football. His main interest is baseball.Good for him.If he can go make millions in MLB in 2 years all the best to him.
But....even if he committed to us, he most likely wouldn't have stayed at ND for more than 1 or 2 years...and then we'd be even more pissed that he "abandoned" us.
He is a freak athlete, thats why I and all of us wanted him...but it's not a big loss.

Will Jamal Turner stay or risk that Starling is a lock for baseball, I hate to point out that injuries happen and he could still be stuck behind Bubba

Baseball America has named him the top baseball player in high school. Very slim chance of him playing football... This works out for the best for us, if we get Golson or Brissett.

I was watching ESPNU recruiting and they were talking about him getting moved to WR at Nebraska.

Just got picked #5 overall by the Kansas City Royals in the MLB draft. I'm sure Nebraska is glad they grabbed another QB in the '11 class, and I am sure glad we got Golson rather than a verbal commit early on from Bubba.

And I'm sure Bubba is glad he is good enough at football to get a scholarship from a BCS school to play QB, because that is something nice to bring with you to Dayton Moore's table. That scholarship is a nice card to have.

A lot of us thought he'd be going the baseball route, but it's not finalized yet. There was an enormous ESPN article on Bubba that was up over the weekend. Personally, I think he's gone.

I think I read on ESPN that he has until mid July to figure out what his next step is. Seems like a small window to negotiate a signing bonus and contract. Scott Boris is his agent so I am sure he will get top dollar.

Can't really turn down the signing bonus he would get.

Especially because of the speculation that the next baseball CBA (currently being negotiated) will eliminate the teams' ability to pay above slot. This could be the last chance for draftees to use their leverage.

He probably wouldn't have gone so high (especially to a risk neutral org like the Royals) if they didn't think he'd sign. I follow the Tigers and they've drafted 3 guys w/their top overall pick that fell in the draft (some dramatically) because teams didn't think they'd give up their scholarships or would be difficult to sign...probably b/c they were repped by Boras. If you care, the three are Porcello, Jacob Turner and the kid last year Nick Castellanos who some thought was the 2nd best HS bat in the draft behind Harper. He dropped all the way to the supplemental round!

Me too but I didn't think that then.

You guys talked me off Starling (due to this baseball stuff) early in the game last year. I appreciate the expertise and insightful guessing that goes on around here.

The impending CBA really undercuts the draftee's ability to negotiate. None the less Boras will somehow find a way to be holding all the cards. He could convince GMs to pay a dollar for a nickel based on the rising price of metals.
