Relatively poor state. Not large in terms of populous. Not a very wealthy alumni base. Hard to raise enormous funds.
True, but you would think that after all those years and Championships, more would kick in.
and Alabama has been football royalty since bear bryant
what about all the Alabama players in the NFL?

Not sure that this needs rehashing (since I believe that the long post-Holtz drought has moderated some of it), but since I lived through a lot of years of this:
1. We used to kick everybody's ass, and were not shy about showing it;
2. We are Catholic. People shouldn't just shrug that away. That's still a thing in places;
3. Now and then across the years, we have been outspoken about "morals", and "values", and other schools lacking them. Everything from not going to classes to low moral characters. Nobody likes someone claiming that they are superior to them, even if it might be correct. "Catholics vs Criminals" doesn't really make us popular;
4. Over the post-Holtz years there have been quite a few moments where elements of the fan base get quite whiney about things. This fuels continuation of non-NDer's belief that ND is delusional and not the group you want to hang out with as buddies.
5. The no-conference thing only adds to this because the base of dislike is already there. It becomes an issue mainly when WE say it is costing us in rankings etc. Then the "Oh you're so special" remarks rain down.

Now I feel less of all of that. We've had our moments, but also have had our ass kicked. Our athletes show out well in media interviews. Kelly gave the program some stability and game cred, and Freeman added a face that the media could like. Notre Dame, I feel, also got more strategic in the media game by offering people who didn't like us nice visit and film opportunities. The up-close familiarity helped each time to my eyes and ears.

The people who complain about ND's independence being an advantage are truly delusional. If it is so advantageous, why don't other schools do it?
It is advantageous to US
others have tried it and quit because it was not good for THEM

The hatred of ND by many is due to a number of reasons; Catholic and Religious certainly a large part of it

The whole conference thing is beyond hypocritical when you note the musical chairs of conferences.

Gross - likely future scheduling concerns i would think

I would expect the Top 15ish programs like our Texas series should be fine if even improve those opportunities. The teams that won’t want to play us in a 24 team will be the 8 - 4/9 - 3 type programs which is why all the ACC schools are whining

How much would the schedule need to downgrade for ND to be left out in a 24 team playoff? Surely even 9-3 will be good enough dang near every single year unless every non-ACC game is replaced with a MAC schedule.

Does the band director have the authority to bring back the Irish Guard height requirement? "Over 5 feet 6 inches tall in full uniform" doesn't quite have the same imposing feel to it.
Considering the band director was the one who changed it, one would assume the new one can change it back. The question is whether he wants to or if they feel it is now a part of th band's identity to "promote from within"

woke crap to change what had been a very impressive guard into just another DEI example

Frankly, I would say the height requirement SHOULD be six foot six

It's been good for crowd energy, but piping in music into the stadium has really drowned out our band at times. I miss being able to hear the Imperial March during big defensive plays and other tunes.
Been to a game the each of the last two season after not getting out since 2012. I have been extremely disappointed at how much of a back seat the band has taken as part of the game.

Also, the Irish Guard does need to go back to being its own thing, and not a promotion for the band.

They really need to go back to being essentially on field mascots during the games like they used to be. Seeing 6 frat bro looking types going crazy in the endzone and celebrating with the players after a touchdown is something I always find endearing about rewatching old games.

the game time experience now frankly is crap compared to 20 years ago.
I guess it really depends on what you're looking for as a fan, but I could not disagree more, honestly. Some of the traditional stuff may have changed, such as the band being the predominant music/entertainment, but the crowd is so much louder than when I started going as a child in the 90s and 00s.

Definitely feel like it is a much more intimidating and fun environment than it ever as in the Davie//Willingham/Weis/early BK years.

I was old enough to have memories of the Holtz years so I can't speak to that, but the replays I've seen did look pretty hype back then.

Went to many games during the Holtz years. Yes, the crowd was loud for its size in big games. But before the stadium expansion it only held appx 55k. Haven't been back since 1998, so I'm really looking forward to the Miami game this year and seeing how much it's changed.
