Well, as far as I know, it’s never been an issue for a previous portal players.this portal season sucks

This whole season has sucked

Remember, (correct me if I'm wrong), but haven't a large number of ND's TP players been GTs?

Also, even last year wasn't quite as frenetic and hyper-rapid moving where the top players expect easy $ and easy school.

So even if some of our TP players in 2025 were not GT, I'm sure they had objectives other than big time $ to come to ND - This year is HIGHLY mercenary and a get the highest bid from schools vibe.

I would appreciate if the program would be a little more open with the press, tbh. We as fans have no idea what's going on, it looks bad- so tell us that it isn't bad. Unless it is bad, in which case I would like to know why it is bad.

I think it's things like this that the beat does that makes Freeman want to keep things under wraps. Publicly promoting ND is desperate makes guys think they'll over pay and puts the staff at a disadvantage with negotiating with prospects.
I’m sure players and agents are fully aware. They aren’t bringing Pete’s tweets (that rhymes) to the negotiating table.

He was crystal balled to them two days ago why are people suprised
Because as it stands right now, there appears to only be 1 quality Defensive Tackle available that is interested in ND, and some people feel he'll end up at Ohio State. As it stands right now, this is ND's top 4 at DT:

Hughes
Sevillano
Mullins
Mukam? Dixon?

That's bad. Like, really bad. 0% chance they can be a true national title contender with that rotation.

Knew that issue would be a likely problem with any portal guy with a decent shot of getting drafted.

There’s got to be a few guys that see a ND education as a positive and not a negative.
Lucas is ready coach! As long as we have hot cheerleaders...He's a DT in a Kickers body

Wow college has really changed. To not choose a school cuz you have to physically go to class is really something

They need a new name to drop,… and they need to absolutely not miss on it. So now they’re in a spot where they need the first part to just miraculously just happen before they even make something good happen,… not good

What people need not forget is that all the same things that ND traditionally struggles with such as location, academics, weather, etc still exist in some recruitments, even when ND is willing to match compensation. Willingness to pay market rates just gets ND on a level playing field, the remainder of the factors in a traditional recruitment, especially for an undergrad student, still exist.

Especially when the choice is getting a degree from an elite university versus a state school.

The nd football still has optimism are they privy to something we are missing or just way behind on the bad news?

Assuming they don't land anyone good in the portal at Defensive Tackle, then they clearly need to just buy some of the best ones available out of High School, right? I mean, what's the alternative?
The way WSU just signed a soon to be 22 year old freshman TE from the NFL pathway program, go get a DT from there.

Since we are one of the few "schools" requiring actual classes, we probably need to pay more. It's basically an extra job duty.
I hear you but my gut reaction to this is nah. Just recruit to fit with guys who understand the value of education / experience of ND. It limits the pool but it also acts as a filter for the culture you want anyway. At the same time, to your point, when push comes to shove... we need to be able to sweeten the pot.

So I teach at a D1 uni and I get football players in my classes here and there. It’s rare but it happens. Some are really good kids ready to do work,… but most are privileged punks who can not believe they actually have to take a physical class while most of their teammates take online courses. I hear that often…

Ok, so I started to write the below reply to this latest don't want to play rigid, in-the-classroom school challenge for ND, but then I realized that if ND makes these adjustments for portal players, the university and MF-led team culture would be seriously affected.

Thus, it is just going to have to be the same ND filter that has always been in place. ND is different and it's not for everyone. Sure Admissions will be flexible, but we won't compromise on players being a students at ND where they go to class with the student body. Yes, the university can offer some classes online, but it can't be where football players (which to be fair would have to be the policy for all players) get special treatment and don't have to go to class. ND is certainly not a Football factory school.

I'm not sure if this is the right attitude, but it seems like that, as before, the staff will just need to find the RKG player, whatever that is in the portal era.

Not sure what MF's NFL flirt was all about and what he and his agent were using it for, but you would think that just like BK a # of years back trying to get better assistant coach pay pkgs and players table, that in this crazy NIL- and TP to the highest bidder-driven CFB world, he and his agent would be using the jump to NFL threat as negotiating leverage to get ND academic standards and policies groups to make "school" more flexible in the portal age.

Assuming the kickers don't even want to go to class? Gotta be the only reason we can't sign a kicker

Hypothetically, if they need more money, could they get out of a contract of someone like Jaylen Sneed and use his money to get Brewu?

Gosh I hate to cater but add some online classes for Pete sake.

Everybody everywhere and every profession is moving that direction.

I have a heard time believing that the general problem we're having with portal players is not wanting to go to class. But presumably that is something for which ND can compensate a player, just like the weather, or being far away from home, etc.
