Yeah, NDAs have limited utility, none in understanding what the market clearing price is for a simple reason: agents. Agents know what every single one of their clients gets and then they generalize when talking to other people ("the market is pay x" is popular euphemism for "my guy got x"). NDAs just keep players from talking to each other, and has previously been said, is of dubious enforceability.

Brewu is on campus at ND right now (allegedly, but haven't seen a confirmation)

Brewu was also expected to visit OSU as soon as he entered the portal. It was all but announced that he was considering visiting.

I get that he's from the Buckeye State, from Columbus, but Francis... OSU didn't believe in you as a player coming out of high school. A certain DL coach did, and that dude is now at ND, a team where you can probably be a starter right away.

Look at me, writing as if Brewu reads this board.

I am not sure about all of this but you would hope the relationship with the d line coach helps.

ND retained nothing at DT, so I’m not sure what that article is gonna say. That’s essentially the only thing they’ve needed to grab in the portal, and they’ve failed miserably.
they had a true freshman this season named Dixon i think from the Miami area who was a 4 star out of high school and over 300 pds that the staff thinks highly of and should probably see a lot of playing time this season

Feel like we’re getting used as leverage by all these Utah guys

Agree unfortunately. Unless we are offering significantly more than Michigan, I have a hard time seeing them leaving Whit.

Michigan also has more of a need as they had more transfers to key contributors than us.

Has there been no news about Gilliam since he left?

Not even announcing more visits?

He had to have chose then.

It’s just not that simple. There are serious ramifications from overpaying

You upset all the other DTs in the room? What do any of them besides Hughes have as a leg to stand on?

Not to jump in the deep end, but this insight into the problems Texas is having right now in the portal are a part of the ramifications:

TLDR: Texas paid big last year, got a reputation for it among agents and players, and now everyone and their mother, including current players, are using Texas to increase bids with the teams they actually want to play for. This alone might be annoying but manageable for one position group, except their entire current roster is apparently threatening to transfer unless they get raises relative to the market. Texas having a reputation as a place with a lot of money, and a willingness to spend, is ironically leading to their budget being more challenged than schools with less money, and they might not be able to actually afford their current roster when this shakes out.

ND clearly made mistakes approaching the portal this year, but it turns out no one is doing this well except for a few non-traditional schools with recent donor money and nothing to lose (TT, IU). All traditional powers have fanbases freaking out right now because it looks like a stream of talent leaking out and nothing serious coming back in.

Most traditional powers recruiting high school well, ND included, are prioritizing roster retention, but even that is not going well at some places because the market is compelling players to come back and say, "that agreement I signed a month ago is too small. Look at what Player Y got. Double it, or I enter the portal."

Texas' problems are severe enough right now that I wouldn't be surprised to see Sarkisian bounce to the NFL (maybe ATL) if he gets an offer.

By all accounts we are already paying a ton in roster retention so the star players here are more than fairly compensated. Overpaying for a DT ≠ paying them more than Leonard Moore. Some teams also have players sign NDAs. And at this point these guys should be hungry for a championship and are more than aware that the DT room is a gaping hole that led to costing them a chance this year already at that.
AB2 is right. I guarantee you that NDA’s or not word manages to get out.

I think you’re generally correct, my meth head copium take would be the CB’s placed may done based on what a kid says to the reporter “Yeah ND was good, still planning on taking my visit to Tennessee” and that signals that the kid is going to get locked up on that visit BUT maybe ND is ironing out the final details and that player may not take the visit.

That would be my most charitable take on the lack of information flow.

Honest question... do you think ND will be idle when it comes to the end?

II said this on a podcast today. There are 4500 players in the portal. ND can get 5-7 players that they like and can contribute.
No I do not think ND will be idle at the end. But the longer we go the bigger fish are falling elsewhere. And mentioning the number of portal players is pointless on several levels. 1) most are not major college program starter quality. 2) DT is our position of need and those players are few and far between. Every time 1 has been falling elsewhere it’s getting that much harder to fill that need. We are in a championship window, we need to be filling the roster with championship level players
