I think now that the training wheels are off, CJ has shown he can make plays down the field. CJ was at a huge disadvantage until Denbrock opened up the play calling. Very frustrated to watch the 1st 3 quarters with the vanilla offense. I think we will be ready for A&M. Both our lines need to play better too!

It was 100% a cj error
100% agree with you about the grounding penalties being CJ's error. Blaming the coordinators for everything is the easy way out, players need to be held accountable.

Overall I was impressed with Carr, some posters seem to forget that he is a freshman on the field & is going to make mistakes. Carr is going to be damn good for ND.

Not giving up on this year by any means, but IF he stays healthy and keeps progressing then he is going to be a complete stud by next year.

What was he supposed to do on those grounding plays. He is probably lucky the second one wasn’t a pick but the first one what was he supposed to do?

The answer is, take the sack. Avoid possible fumbles and ints
We've complained about QBs not doing just that. The first one I think all he had to do was get it closer to a WR but still way out of reach and it was otherwise the right play.

I am not sure the grounding was a mistake in those scenarios. First, there is a chance it doesnt get called grounding. Secondly, the penalty allowed the receivers to make it back, catch their breath, and get a play called. I am not sure all that would have taken less than the 10 second runoff.

Yes. Make sure it is past the line of scrimmage.

My only concern is that I don't want to see him run that much. He's not RL and I worry about wear and tear and worse, a season-ending injury (one time, he led with head down into tackler - Not a good idea). I like that he is tough and can run those keepers when needed but not so sure how effective he's gonna be on a QB sneak up the middle for short yards vs. rolling out of the pocket w/ option to keep it (again, he's not as big and overpowering as RL). And hey, the kid can sling the ball so that's what I want to see. We really don't want to see CJ as the top game rusher with ND's stable of top RBs.

Agreed. The occasional QB draw out of the blue is one thing, but to do it so much the defense is starting to expect will probably end his season.

We are going to need to learn how to get under center with split back or I formation. I hate shotgun for short yardage. Wish Kedron Youbg was here for short yardage. Even Gbran Payne is solid between the tackles. Is it crazy to run a wildcat with Love and Price for a change of pace?

It might’ve been asked and/or answered, but I’m curious what his stats look like on non-screen plays
Same vein: I want to see the advanced stats for all passing plays. Air yards/average depth of target? They had to have been abysmal.

For QBs that threw at least 5 passes behind the LOS, Carr ranked 25th in terms of what % of his attempts were that. It’s not what you want long term but I think folks are a little over blowing it given it was the first start in the rain on the road. 28% of attempts is less than Nussmeier against Clemson. It’s less than Marcel Reed, less than Sam Leavitt, DJ Lagway, and Jayden Maiva

How many of those passes were dropped?
