Predictions:
  1. He came out in the mozzetta and stole, and took Leo for his name. Those both indicate friendliness toward traditionalists, who Francis went out of his way to persecute.
  2. Francis also hated Americans, so the Cardinals electing an American pope indicates an intent to improve relations with the American Church.
  3. The traditionalist v. progressive split in the Church doesn't map cleanly onto the conservative v. progressive split in American politics. I'm sure there will be conflict between this papacy and Trump/Vance over deportations.
  4. Despite all the talk of "synodality," Francis was extremely authoritarian in how he ran the Vatican. Most of the Curia, even those Cardinals elevated by Francis, did not appreciate that, so I expect Leo XIV to be much more collaborative in his style.

To further this, especially w/r/t Point 4, a quick election was not seen as likely. Leo must have really impressed his brother Cardinals during the Congregations.

Ehh...he did tend to hate (for lack of a better word) people he viewed as traditionalists. Let's not canonize the guy immediately. Or, even if we do - it doesn't mean he was perfect.

Now, on some level I understand why he had certain feelings towards those groups. But, he wasn't very good at turning the other cheek.

Take the Latin Mass for, example. It's a beautiful form of worship. By itself, there's nothing wrong with it. Now, I wouldn't want to go to it all of the time, but it's a link to our past that should be available to people. And, maybe some people do prefer it and want to go to it all of the time. If that brings them closer to God, than that's cool by me.

Now, unfortunately, a lot of the people that attend that mass tend skew politically in the opposite direction of Francis. So, during the Francis years the topic became politicized and regularly attending it became viewed as a form of resistance to him. So, he cracked down on it. Again, I get why he would want to - but doing so wasn't exactly pastoral.

The global church is diverse and beautiful and there's no reason there shouldn't be diversity in our worship.

Anyway - the point is, Francis wasn't perfect.

He certainly did a lot of good. His concern for the poor and marginalized and for the environment were A+ in my book.

So, if the new Pope continues the 90-95% of what Francis did that was moving things in the "right" direction but also shows a willingness to be open to the pastoral needs of everyone in his flock that would be the best possible scenario in my opinion.

Cernovich is an idiot who blogged about the flavor of ladyboy penis in Thailand. Not only is he not in a position to really have a strong opinion on the Pope's bona fides generally, he probably shouldn't comment negatively on a Pope being too liberal for his taste (see what I did there)
